Most aircraft today are built using electrically conducting materials ( aluminum or carbon fiber composite).

In a crash, it is possible (likely?) the antenna will be sheared off, rendering the elt useless.

Be aware of any ¡°legal requirements¡± specified by the Mfr or TSO if you decide to deviate. ?Some ELT¡¯s I¡¯ve installed had some very specific mounting requirements for the box itself and the antenna - the latter usually on the outside of the OML, to the rear and upper surface, and vertically oriented. ?While it¡¯s unlikely that you will get ramp checked, it¡¯s always good to have an answer at the ready if you are questioned
