Steve
Thanks for taking the time to register for the group. It will be difficult to build up the useful content that was on the other site. You have got to start somewhere. I am still tring to get the word out to the T27 community so thanks for being the first besides myself.

new Tartan 27 owners site
The message copied below is the latest I've been able to learn about the old Tartan 27 Owners site. Many thanks to Brian for his efforts to discover what happened, and in setting up the new site. Hopefully the discussion information from the old site will be archived somewhere and we can integrate it into the new one. From Brian G.: I managed to reach Ken and I found out what happened to the old site. They had a hardware failure and lost all the discussion information. Between the hardware failure and his fights with spam he decided not to rebuild the site. He did offer to help me with pictures and what not from the old site. I think he may also be willing to transfer the old domain. My plan at the moment is to get an anchor set on the T-27.com site and figure out how to recreate the discussion groups and content. :)

A Tragedy!
The loss of the Tartan 27 Owners site, to me, is a great loss! I needed that site! The information in the discussions and in the projects was priceless! Thanks for getting this started. I hope we can get back to where we were before this loss happened. HBH Irish Wake Hull 278

prop question
3
Well, I've migrated. Thanks for setting this up so quickly! A question already. Doing an early haul-out this year, and want to switch to a new 3 blade prop. We do a lot of motoring...still A4 power. Also going to remove the old VDO speedometer fin. I need to know if there is ample clearance for an 11 x 5 prop. Does anyone have one that large? I need to order before she's out of the water. Also, do any Canadians on the list know what the import duty will be on a $310 (US) prop? Deciding between the Indigo (US) and Campbel Sailor. Off to work on tearing out the ice box finally! Many thanks, Marty (Vancouver) "Poseidon" 1967 #342

prop question, a little late perhaps
Marty, I discovered a file I uploaded from the old site that has the original T27 specs on it called "information.html" under the Files section here. The specs for props says for 2 blade use 13x12x1 and for 3 blade use 13x11x1. Sorry I could not find this info for you while I was in Hawai'i and you needed to buy a prop. Snow in NY and I cant wait for warmer weather to get our boating season underway. Neville D, Did you get to go up to the Maine coast (was it?) last season? If so, how was the trip?

deck work
3
Dear Tartaners, I have a long deck crack down the center of the foredeck. (The boat was improperly repaired a decade ago). The core is delaminated about 4" on either side of the crack....maybe wet beyond that. Water has found its way down to the aft end of the 2x4 glassed in above the v- berth, and drips from there. My plan is to use a router (hooked up to a shop vac) to remove that strip of deck, core, and the rotten parts of trhe 2X4...all from above (leaving the v-berth ceiling intact and supported from below). I will open the deck as wide as necessary until I find dry, solid core. I will then glass in a new 2x4 (oak?). After re-coring and re- glassing up to deck level, I plan to epoxy teak strips to the deck rather than attempt to create a new non-skid. Also, I will replace the single bow cleat with port and starboard cleats (with backing plates). Any suggestions or advice gratefully appreciated. I will post pics. Thanks! Marty (Vancouver)

Update..... :)
4
Brian, I feel your pain and I too miss the old website that Ken set up and maintained. I missed it so much that I set up a Yahoo Group called T27Owners and uploaded a bunch of info that Ken provided me. He was not able to provide me with a dump or file of the discussion forums though so all of that good stuff seems to be lost. I applaud you if you want to try and rebuild a new site but I would like to mention a few things: 1) the Yahoo Groups website is a free hosting and has room to upload pictures, text files, databases and has a discussion forum like feature built in via email (why rebuild the wheel?). 2) I have already uploaded and updated the Links and Info pages from the old site within the T27Owners group (Ken was kind enough to provide me with that baseline of information) 3) If you are convinced you want to take on building the t-27.com site (and maintaining and paying for it) then I salute you. My feeling is that there should be one place we can all go to get the info we were used to getting. 4) I am a currently out of work programmer and would be happy to write a C++ program to parse the old data files if we could get a hold of them in order to extract the useful forum information. If this could happen I would be happy to provide you with the info as well but again I think it might be just as easy to use the Yahoo Groups feature rather than try to re-build the website, page by page (it is free after all). Other sailboat owners have their own groups on Yahoo not that that should discourage you. If I could only get my hands on the unformatted data files from the discussion forums I might be able to reconstruct the bulk of the info and easily post it on Yahoo Groups. Have you checked it out? I feel your pain. Caleb Davison #328 Odalisque 1967

Owners List
Thanks Bob. I cant believe how much of a boat geek I have become. I used to be in IT and should have known that there are always backup copies of everything somewhere. I found the old owners list there that I will post to the Files section of the T27Owners group website. Brian, if you want to send out a group email to all of the old tartan27owners folks we have the list thanks to Bob. Caleb Davison #328 Odalisque

Projects this week are
To get the replacement aftermarket thermostat replacement kit #401 (original t-stat cost $140 or so and aftermarket $30) from Moyer Marine and install. Finish replacing new 2 1/8" hole in hull (I dont like using a hole saw on the hull of my boat) to install a new Moor knotmeter #LKD digital readout. I should have got the model with the log (as in how many nm you have travelled, cumulatively) but being a cheapskate I bought the one without the distance log for $180 from defender.com (WM sells the Raymarine line only). I am considering replacing our depth transducer next year though, too many holes all at once to fill. I am looking forward to knowing what my sail trim does to our speed through water with more accuracy than our old VDO Sumlog propeller unit. And then there is a bottom painting looming in my future in about a week as we are scheduled to launch on 4/22. Regarding the winch bases on Lola (I am referring to the ones outside the cockpit coamings) are they in bad enough shape that they need to be painted? Can they be cleaned up a bit first with a wire brush, dremel tool and/or some Naval Jelly (phosphoric acid gel - keep off everything but the metal)? I think that 3M also makes a so called 'marine grade' aluminum polish and cleaner for aluminum as well. Your mileage will vary. If you have just finished sanding your exterior teak I would oil it with Teak oil right away as it will protect it and make it look amazing and evaporate fairly slowly. You can still use Cetol or the varnish of your choice if you first wipe the oiled Teak surfaces down with acetone before finishing. About painting; I think you meant that you wanted to paint Lola from the waterline up so I will only add that I got a decent ablative anti-fouling paint for the hull below the water line at WM for nearly $50/gal after mail in rebate (have you priced this stuff lately?). I bought the CPP Ablative paint by the gallon and intend to have several inner coats of one color (black) and outer coats of another (red) so that I can determine how much paint has sloughed off. I too have considered painting the topsides of Odalisque to cover the spiderweb cracks in the freeboard gelcoat, above the water line. I remember the detail of Peter Youngblood's account and photos of how he re-painted his topsides; the final product looked great and took a considerable effort to pull off but I may just try Poly Glo or similar 1 year finish for around $50 + labor (no buffing involved) versus $$$$ this season and save that expense for later. We are already looking at having a new mainsail cut which will cost $$$$ of which my share would likely be $$$$/2=$500+ dollars. I have found some good tips and postings on the sailboatowners.com website under their 24 hour activity button. My aim is to build up the bulk of the knowledge that was on the old site so I encourage everyone here to check out sailboatowners.com and search their archives on subjects that you have trepidation or worries about. There are lots of people in the same boat and their forum includes a lot of active users who have cut a few holes in hulls of various boats! A sailboat is a sailboat whether it is made by Tartan (which is special BTW - they were the Cadillacs of their time) or Hunter or whatever. The Hunter owner's hull might be thinner but their knowledge is what we want after all, isn't it? How is your A4 if you have one? Tips on running the engine on the hard and servicing it can be found at moyermarine.com and you can call them and they will speak to you. Congratulations on the addition to the family and I hope you can splash in before August as that is kind of late, but not too late as the fall can be a great time to sail. Good luck to all on your springtime boat projects and preparations. I have said too much; I haven't said enough. Caleb #328 Odalisque, 1967

Looking for 1963 T27 "Mary Ann"
6
Hi guys! I'm not sure if this is quite proper for this group, so if it's not, forgive me. I am trying to locate the 1963 T72 "Mary Ann". I was her owner until 1997, but I've lost the information on who I sold her to. At that time, she was in Annapolis, MD. I want to contact her current owner & see if he'd consider selling her back to me. I miss her :( Anyway, if anybody knows anything, please drop me a line -- I'd very much appreciate it. Dave.

NEW OWNER OF TARTAN 27 1965
3
I am looking for specs on the interior of this boat. I was givin this boat and it is almost completly empty. The mast I had taken down to get under a bridge and by the time I returned to the ship yard where i left it. Some crackhead cut it up and sold it for scrap. Anyway. My kids and I really like the way it looks and my son is very eager to help rebuild this boat to at least a motorized cruiser. If anyone knows where to get the best deals on parts and maybe even some blueprints so I can build stuff myself. Your knowlege would be greatly appreciated. I am also looking for an outboard to fit this until we can drydock and replace the onboard engine thanks a bunch Ron

NEW OWNER OF TARTAN 27 1964
3
Ron, You are correct. The difference between a 64' and 65' is pretty minimal if at all. Since you have no mast or boom I can safely assume that you have no standing rigging either (the wires that hold the mast up). Replacing the spars (mast & boom) could be a pretty expensive proposition not to mention all the standing rigging. One thing you could do is find an old mast and boom and try to retro fit it into your boat. You would need to shim the hole in the deck the mast goes through as well as the foot (where the bottom of the mast sits on the floor or sole so it does not slide around inside the cabin). There is a File under the T27Owners Group called information.htm that has the specifics on the standing rigging, spars, running rigging and other details about the boat. It sounds like the interior of your boat was pretty badly stripped. Sorry to hear that. The old Tartan 27s were built like Cadillacs when they were made and the hull is quite thick (1/2", I just cut a hole in my hull) and they have classic sailboat lines. With all the original wood on them they can look beautiful but all that wood needs work so maybe you are lucky to some extent. I hate to say it but this boat would make a great platform with just a 15HP (minimum I would suggest) outboard motor on her and a place to sleep. You could get camping cooking gear, a bucket and be done with it too. Keep in mind that this boat was originally powered with a 20HP (or is it 30?) engine that you only need the peak output from unless it is windy as hell. Originally there was a v-berth up in the forward part of the cabin for sleeping (with lockers underneath for storage) and the fresh water tank was located here under the v-berth (I assume that has been stripped out of your boat too?). Is the rudder still attached to the hull (there would be a tiller for steering in the back of the cockpit if there was)? Now that the Atomic4 engine is gone (along with a lot of stuff) your boat is probably a lot lighter than mine. People do make custom trailers for these hulls (again, usually expensive) but the stated weight of this boat (fully loaded) is 7200 Lbs which is almost 4 tons. You need a pretty strong vehicle to tow this much weight any distance. If there is a boatyard nearby that would pull your boat out they usually supply jack-stands to hold your boat up for a monthly price if you want it out of the water to work on. As far as pics of this boat most people tend to take shots of themselves relaxing in the cockpit rather than detailing all the features of their boat but there are photos at various owners websites under the Links section of the T27Owners Group (here is my site which is also listed there: http://www.odalisque.us/ ). I can try to take some pics of the interior of my boat this weekend to show you what was probably there some time ago. Definitely check out the Links page for this website that I have put together if you haven't already: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/T27Owners/links Caleb #328, Odalisque

Type ll cockpit on later T27's
7
Hello everyone, I just joined the group and I'm seriously considering a purchase on a T27. It's one of the last hulls before the switch to the T27-2. They've done away with the lazarette on the later boats and I'm wondering if anyone has an opinon on these particular boats. I've heard they made minor changes but for the better. I personally like the rear lazarette. Just thought I'd ask. I'm pretty excited to get my hands on one. Thanks for your time. c
