Re: Lifelines

On our boat we have two different attachment points at each end; one is on top, and the other is down low to allow for the headsail and mainsheet to be more fair. I keep them on the low setting when general sailing, and bring them back to the top when the grandkids are aboard. With solid tubing I would lose that option.

Smallest boat I know with solid lifelines is a 36'steel boat.

Hi Brian,

I was always bumping into my lifelines and was happy they gave a little ~ seemed to prevent a lot of bruises.? Just my opinion.
Besides, cable seems a lot easier to install and isn't a custom system.? Don't know anyone who has solid tubing.

There are a few good reasons that lifelines are ss cable or amsteel. If hit it cannot kink like ss tubing and it is also lighter by a lot. On a 50' boat it is viable but still not a great idea in my opinion.

Hello ?- I replaced our cutless bearing a couple years ago, and happen to have the box in front of me. Our shaft is 1¡±.... don¡¯t know if there are other size shafts in a Tartan 27 ? The one I used is made by Johnson and says BALE 1 x 1.5 x 4

Hope that helps!?

Hello everybody, I am new to the group and have owned hull number 372 for the past year. She needs a new cutless bearing and I want to make sure I am purchasing the correct dimensions. Based on what I've read on this forum, it looks like a one and a half inch outer diameter with a 1 inch inner diameter and 4 in in length is what I need. I would be much obliged if someone could confirm and put my mind at ease.

Re: T27 cutless bearing

Welcome to the group.

Replaced the cutlass on our Atomic 4 setup with 1" shaft several years ago.?
I believe the bearing I used was this one:?

which matches the dimensions you gave.

Unfortunately,? when re-powering, the layout of the mounts is by no means the premier consideration. There a number of ways to customize the current mount arrangement to fit other engines.
BTW, inspect the logs closely, I have dealt with several boats where the wood inside the FG was just loose wet fibers (oak), which means rebuilding the logs, which allows for relocation as well.
Cooling/exhaust system, prop and shaft layout and alignment, wiring and electrics, fuel system, controls etc. are all factors to consider and deal with, which may well outweigh the footprint as a primary issue.
Cheers,?? Will

Looking for a Universal M18 diesel for repowering of Tartan 27-2

Anybody know of a Universal M18 diesel for sale? Or can you recommend other diesels with same footprint for easy installation? Boat had an old Farymann but that's gone. Unfortunately, I need to sell the boat and interested party wants to put in a Universal M18. He's not really interested in another Farymann nor an Atomic 4. Any leads would be helpful. Thanks!

Re: Mainsail size/ thoughts

IMHO, measure luff, leach and foot, dont make assumtions and also check batten type, size etc as well as type of slides, weight of cloth, reefing pts. etc.

Re: New file uploaded to T27Owners

Hi Ron,

Well you have figured out how to email the group if you haven't joined T27Owners yet.?
Have you found the place on Yahoo where you request to be a member of this group?? The message should appear when you try to bring up the T27Owners group.? I get to approve the membership requests and I have not seen one in a few weeks.
There may be some problems with Yahoo Groups.? I'll check to see if there are any members pending and if you are one of them.

Welcome to T27Owners group (hopefully).

Used sail to fit raised boom -- dimensions

Dawn is in need of a new mainsail. The previous owner lifted the boom approximately 6 inches to accommodate a dodger, which means I'm in the market for a 30 foot luff.?

I've been looking at used sails. If going this route, it looks like I might have to compromise between a shorter foot length or shorter luff. You folks have a lot more experience with this boat than we do and I don't pretend to fully understand the implications of changing sail dimension.?

So, which would you compromise on length, foot or luff?

Re: Mainsail size/ thoughts

It looks like you are in the ball park.

the main thing is will your boom ride low enough for the 5 inch diference in luff?
the foot is about 2 inches so probably ok on the boom
Also if it is a great sail at a great price, check with a loft, probably not a big deal to take 5 inches off the bottom.

Mainsail size/ thoughts

So there is a new main for sale near me and the measurements are close but.. close enough to be worth springing for? Wanted everyone's opinion.
New sail is P=30.9, E=13.7 sqft=225 versus tartan measurements on sail data P=30.5 E=13.5 sqft = 205.
The price is dangerously good, but I don't want to shoehorn it on.
Thanks,
Alex
