Re: NEW OWNER OF TARTAN 27 1965

My mistake it is a 1964 not 65 if that makes a difference....
I did have jib with her. But dont know where to find a mast and boom.
there is absolutley nothing inside of her except a sink and a bench.
I think the guy who gave it to me was just putting around fishing off
of her. I love the way she looks.... though kept up very poorly by
the last owner. I under stand fiberglass pretty well. I know how to
paint boats. I am just not real familiar with the interior and how to
build correctly. I am attempting to build the interior platform for
the bed in the bow area so I can at least spend the night on her. The
prev. owner has already fixed a mount on the rear of the boat for a
outboard. But she still has the ability to glide right along with a
sail. I just need a mast. She has no atomic 4 . for some reason it
has been removed and the shaft hole plugged. She doesnt leak. Alos
none of the exterior is available either...... this is strickly a
shell of a boat. But I see much more. Even if it takes a while to
make worthy of using. I am also looking for a trailer to get her out
of the water and work on her. So if you hear or know of anything send
me a line. If you want to see some pics to give advice let me know.
I know nothing about this boat but I am learning and love this boat
more and more...

boat still has the alcohol stove and galley on the starboard or right
side of the boat facing the bow with a bunch of nice interior
varnished teak that still looks nice and my boat is from 1967 so I
feel bad for you that your boat was vandalized and hurt.
I am sorry to say that I dont have any pictures of the cabin
interior of the Taran 27 on this website but there are some photos of
us and aour boat at my webste
I will also refer you to the Links section of this website for
information about fibergalss (otherwise known as epoxy and cloth or
matt) , your current engine which is probably an Atomic 4 which you
might be able to get running if you havent tried much and encourage
you to continue to ask about your boat project.
There is an inherent problem with the T27 where the transom slopes
in towards the hull makes mounting an outboard motor platform
somewhat problematic but not impossible with the use of tools and
epoxy and fiberglass.
Even with the best motor you would only be able to go about 6+ mph
over water minus current. Are you sure you want to turn this sail
boat into a motor boat? Does it have any sails that the crackhead did
not make off with? Maybe the old gal can still move on her own,
Keep us posted and good luck with your project.

I was givin this boat and it is almost completly empty.
The mast I had taken down to get under a bridge and by the

cut it up and sold it for scrap. Anyway. My kids and I really like
the

Your knowlege would be greatly appreciated. I am also looking for

Type ll cockpit on later T27's

Hello everyone,

I just joined the group and I'm seriously considering a purchase on a
T27. It's one of the last hulls before the switch to the T27-2.
They've done away with the lazarette on the later boats and I'm
wondering if anyone has an opinon on these particular boats. I've heard
they made minor changes but for the better. I personally like the rear
lazarette. Just thought I'd ask. I'm pretty excited to get my hands
on one. Thanks for your time.

FYI there is a 1966 Tartan 27 for sale on Long Island.
?
Not sure how accurate the info is, it was donated to the museum and they want $4K for it according to the page.? Definately worth checking out if you're in the area!

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Each Tartan had a hull number.? Mine was #71.? The hull number is normally on a brass plate on the sliding companionway hatch.? At any rate, they are alot easier to find by hull number.? I have the static contents of the old tartan site and could look for a picture if I had the hull #.
?
By the way, the boat advertised for sale is very similar to mine, in better condition.? It's also a W.D. Shock boat.? Evidence of this is: 1) bathroom in with v-berth instead of separate.? 2) post by galley, 3) rudder on floor.? 4) winches mounted "up" on fiberglass.? I'm not 100% convinced that it's a 1966.?
?
?
To all: I apologize I have not been able to work on the new owners site.? I've been tied down with a number of things such as going on a 4 day cruise and helping my mother move from Texas to Florida.? :)? Now that my relaxing vacation and my stressing vacation are behind me I should have some time to work on the site.? :)

Re: Looking for 1963 T27 "Mary Ann"

Do you know what Hull number she was?
No I don't. She was USCG documented, and those records show a "VIN"
of D571334. Documentation was apparently allowed to expire April 30,
2000.

She had a black hull and had been hit in the port rear quarter &
patched. You could see the patch from the inside. The only modern
instrument was a depthsounder, with the transducer mounted through the
hull near the bow.

I feel like I've lost my cat! I'm guessing she's somewhere in the
northeast -- I think the guy was from Jersey. I'm diging through my
papers for a bill of sale copy, but no luck so far.

Thanks in advance for any hints.

dave.

Looking for 1963 T27 "Mary Ann"

Hi guys! I'm not sure if this is quite proper for this group, so if
it's not, forgive me.

I am trying to locate the 1963 T72 "Mary Ann". I was her owner until
1997, but I've lost the information on who I sold her to. At that
time, she was in Annapolis, MD.

I want to contact her current owner & see if he'd consider selling her
back to me. I miss her :(

Anyway, if anybody knows anything, please drop me a line -- I'd very
much appreciate it.

Dave.

I was sorry to learn that the T27 Owners site crashed. Ken worked
hard on the site for several years and also Phil Cox before him. The
old links at tartanowners.org have been updated to reflect the new
addresses. If TONE can do anything else to help promote the new site,
please let us know. Meantime, any owners who don't have their T27
listed at tartanowners.org are welcome to add their profile:

There is also a new link there to list T27 owners by hull number which
might be useful to owners while the new site fills out.

Projects this week are

To get the replacement aftermarket thermostat replacement kit #401 (original t-stat cost $140 or so and aftermarket $30) from Moyer Marine and install.? Finish replacing new 2 1/8" hole in hull (I dont like using a hole saw on the hull of my boat) to install a new Moor knotmeter #LKD digital readout.? I should have got the model with the log (as in how many nm you have travelled, cumulatively) but being a cheapskate I bought the one without the distance log for $180 from defender.com (WM sells the Raymarine line only).? I am considering replacing our depth transducer next year though, too many holes all at once to fill.? I am looking forward to knowing what my sail trim does to our speed through water with more accuracy than our old VDO Sumlog propeller unit.? And then there is a bottom painting looming in my future in about a week as we are scheduled to launch on 4/22.

Regarding the winch bases on Lola (I am referring to the ones outside the cockpit coamings) are they in bad enough shape that they need to be painted?? Can they be cleaned up a bit first with a wire brush, dremel tool and/or some Naval Jelly (phosphoric acid gel - keep off everything but the metal)?? I think that 3M also makes a so called 'marine grade' aluminum polish and cleaner for aluminum as well.? Your mileage will vary.
If you have just finished sanding your exterior teak I would oil it with Teak oil right away as it will protect it and make it look amazing and evaporate fairly slowly. You can still use Cetol or the varnish of your choice if you first wipe the oiled Teak surfaces down with acetone before finishing.

About painting; I think you meant that you wanted to paint Lola from the waterline up so I will only add that I got a decent ablative anti-fouling paint for the hull below the water line at WM for nearly $50/gal after mail in rebate (have you priced this stuff lately?).? I bought the CPP Ablative paint by the gallon and intend to have several inner coats of one color (black) and outer coats of another (red) so that I can determine how much paint has sloughed off.

I too have considered painting the topsides of Odalisque to cover the spiderweb cracks in the freeboard gelcoat, above the water line.? I remember the detail of Peter Youngblood's account and photos of how he re-painted his topsides; the final product looked great and took a considerable effort to pull off but I may just try Poly Glo or similar 1 year finish for around $50 + labor (no buffing involved) versus $$$$ this season and save that expense for later.? We are already looking at having a new mainsail cut which will cost $$$$ of which my share would likely be $$$$/2=$500+ dollars.

I have found some good tips and postings on the sailboatowners.com website under their 24 hour activity button.? My aim is to build up the bulk of the knowledge that was on the old site so I encourage everyone here to check out sailboatowners.com and search their archives on subjects that you have trepidation or worries about.? There are lots of people in the same boat and their forum includes a lot of active users who have cut a few holes in hulls of various boats!? A sailboat is a sailboat whether it is made by Tartan (which is special BTW - they were the Cadillacs of their time) or Hunter or whatever.? The Hunter owner's hull might be thinner but their knowledge is what we want after all, isn't it??

How is your A4 if you have one?? Tips on running the engine on the hard? and servicing it can be found at moyermarine.com and you can call them and they will speak to you.

Congratulations on the addition to the family and I hope you can splash in before August as that is kind of late, but not too late as the fall can be a great time to sail.

Good luck to all on your springtime boat projects and preparations.

I have said too much; I haven't said enough.

Projects this week are...
I've decided to paint the winch bases, ports, and stanchion bases
with an aluminum based paint called aluthane, nothing... and I mean
nothing will remove it from my hands so hopefully it will hold up,...
It's available from

Excellent company.. the owner emailed me back within 24 hours with
advice and they even included a copy of this old boat with my order.
I also got 3 gals of no blush epoxy to prime the deck and hull pior to
painting.
Most of the exterior wood has been sanded down and I'm currently
researching hull paints... I'm about 90% convinced to use system 3
water based poly... I remember Peter Youngblood saying how much he
like it on the old site... For the non skid I'm thinking of using a
commercial company that applies non skid to truck beds... For around
$600 they will come to the house and apply the stuff, I believe they
have a tan color... might be a little too rough... still more research
to do.. We just had a new addition to the family so my original budget
has been reduced, I may have to hold of on the interior work until
next year... I'm hoping to splash sometime in August... fortunately I
have the Oday 22 to tide me over til then..
next week I think I may have to remove the centerboard, i'm concerned
about the pennant and the bottom show some delam... involves
digging a rather large hole and the ground is only now starting to thaw...
again bravo on the new site..

Thanks Richard.? I had forgotten about the owners list on the tartanowners.org website.? I suspect that it is fairly current.? How is Lola faring this latest cold spell?

The bad news is that the archive.org website has only a little more than the owners list and information page that is of any value.? The archive shows the topics in both the Projects and Discussion forums but rarely contains anything more than the first post if that.? There are none of the helpful answers available to the initial questions.? In short, the archive is incomplete but a few pictures come up if you are feeling nostalgic and have too much time on your hands (as I seem to).

Re: deck work

H. Robert Holmes

Good luck with your deck repair! I have deck issues as well, but not
in the same place. Mine problems are at the place the chainplates
come through the deck. The wood core there is very wet and
disintegrating. I will soon be doing deck repair as well...

--- In T27Owners@..., Marty Levenson <martylev@...> wrote:

Dear Tartaners,

I have a long deck crack down the center of the foredeck. (The boat
was improperly repaired a decade ago). The core is delaminated about
4" on either side of the crack....maybe wet beyond that. Water has
found its way down to the aft end of the 2x4 glassed in above the v-
berth, and drips from there.

My plan is to use a router (hooked up to a shop vac) to remove that
strip of deck, core, and the rotten parts of trhe 2X4...all from
above (leaving the v-berth ceiling intact and supported from below).
I will open the deck as wide as necessary until I find dry, solid
core. I will then glass in a new 2x4 (oak?). After re-coring and re-
glassing up to deck level, I plan to epoxy teak strips to the deck
rather than attempt to create a new non-skid. Also, I will replace
the single bow cleat with port and starboard cleats (with backing
plates).

Any suggestions or advice gratefully appreciated. I will post pics.

Thanks!
