A few points....
-using a boom vang and setting it up to not allow the boom to raise up high enough to catch the backstay is something that should be done on stock boats or boats that have raised booms.
-the comfort and safety benefits of raising the boom far outweigh concerns about CE, etc.
-a raised boom will also be less likely to hit the water on a broach, etc.
- it is bad seamanship to sail dead downwind in breeze with the main up...a spinnaker with a snuffer sock or double headsail setup is more forgiving if you really needed to sail a DDW course.
- unless you have replaced your rig, boom, standing rigging, etc. it would be smarter to tack your boat rather than jibe in breeze. ?Even if you need to fire up the motor and reef sails, which you should have already done..to pass through the eye of the wind...a fifty plus year out spar with old bronze hardware will eventually fail with the shockloading of a violent jibe. ?

There's no reason you can't raise the boom. It's a common modification, especially on older boats. There's a Library of Congress on the topic on YouTube and the internets.?

Bronze and aluminum dont get along, add the stainless screws and its a mess. A few alloys like Marinium are better.?
When you re-assemble, use TefGel as an insulator and cut a thin plastic disc to put between the different metals.?

In the end, lifelines can be more of a psychological benefits and convenient hand-hold. they are usually too low and two weakly constructor or poorly installed to provide real safety.
?I would suggest an a custom Lifeline bare wire or Dyneema run from the pulpit to the push pit and secured to their shrouds at about head height so you have someplace up towards your chest to be able to grab.
?Too, of course you should have a harness and lanyard and have some inboard place to connect to: hardpoints and/ or Jack lines?

Even on the 36' boat I saw with solid lifelines they looked big and industrial, clunky. Wire or amsteel lifelines are almost invisible and look a lot better.

I just recently replaced my lifelines with covered Dyneema. It is fantastic!, by far the way to go. very easy and I did my own spicing. Got a deal on some closeout line at West Marine.
