Thanks for all the response. Points well taken.? Although it does appear that the main could be hoisted another foot, it would soon be frayed on the backstay. Yes , the boom is rather long , which makes an accidental jibe very threatening !?? Looks like low bimini will remain just that !?????? Ron s/v Hygelig --

Famous to some of us fans of the Tartan 27' is Hygelig, as was Russel Cobb (?).
On the subject of raising the mast Richard raised a good point.? If the boom could be lifted, as by a jibing main sail such that it struck the back stay then things could go bad quickly (if the back stay snapped).? I haven't done the trignometry to figure out how high you could raise it without it being able to strike the back stay.? I wouldn't want to lose the rig while island hopping.?
My other concern with the idea of raising your boom is the likely effect from slight sail area reduction and you would slightly raise the center of effort (CE) of the boat.? Slight changes that I am sure have been done as has also been suggested.? Googling the idea makes sense on youtube or forum entries etc.
I understand your comment about having to fabricate a low bimini, so it could clear the bottom of the boom. And if you got a new main sail cut you could have it made "X" inches shorter.
Your boat, your money, your call.

In any case , also need to buy a mainsail as mine is very tired.???????????? Ron

Hi Ron
Isn¡¯t your T27 famous?
I¡¯ve heard of owners raising the boom up to a foot to accommodate their height and/or dodger. The mainsail foot at the minimum will need some work or if you need a new main the loft can work out the new dimensions.
