I downloaded some forum software early last week.? I'm planning to install it and see how it goes.? It looks very similar to the old site and offers more control.
?
In the meanwhile, I took my ASA bareboat and coastal cruising courses over the weekend.? Got to sail on a T-37.? Was nice.? Very familiar feeling to our 27's.? Of course 2 feet of additional beam and another 10 feet of cabin make alot of difference.... but it was still interesting.? Gave me some ideas on how to do some stuff on our boats.? I learned quite a bit from taking my ASA courses.? I took the basic keelboat a month and a half ago, and then I took the combo bareboat/coastal cruising course.? In theory I'm certified to rent a boat anywhere that recognizes the certification.? Most charter companies recognize ASA.? One of these days I'll get a chance to spend a week sailing somewhere else and it beats trying to take my boat there.
?
I also found an interesting Maptech site.? I'll post the link later to the t-27.com site.? It is freeboatcharts.com or something like that.? Anyhow, it has a nice viewing tool and you can print charts.? You can download charts for anywhere in the US for free.? Just select the area by map or name and then pick your charts.? It might take some real time on a slow connection, but none-the-less it's free.? I like to download charts for areas I used to live or want to sail in and then look around.? The free software is pretty nice.? It lets you plot a route and gives you all your coordinates.

I really miss the old board, but think you're doing a great job
recreating what we had. I look forward to more posts about projects,
upgrades etc. I checked out your owners list and didn't find my name
on it, so here is the information for you

I own the T-27 pictured on your website "Lagoda". I'm in the process
of rechristening her, when that is complete, she will be called
"Southern Horizon". She is at the Mobjack Bay Marina, in North, VA.

Re: T-27.com update

Brian,
Sorry your t-27.com newsletter got held up. I'm not sure why Yahoo held it as spam. I just noticed it after the holiday weekend (another
reason to have an alternate site/repository of information).
I have not tried wayback.org to see if any of the old forum data is
available but my last attempts to do so with another archive facility
proved fruitless as only the main pages were archived.
Keep up the good work.

Hello
Gang,
? I spent some
time this week and tonite working on the site.? I apologize for the
time
it's taking me.? I got some documentation online that I found in the
salvaged files.? This is really interesting stuff and you might peek at
it.? I'm working on the boat pics...... and then I'll tackle the
forums.
?
Synopsis:
- Encountered
technical and capability issues with hosting at godaddy.com.? Moved
site to
in-house servers to remove issues and make it easier to
edit/maintain.
- Spent some time
digging through the files I received from Ken.? Starting to sort
them.
- Removed Frontpage
related structural content that is no longer needed.
- Identified and
sorted technical documents into a quasi-library.
- Created a "specs"
menu and put technical stuff online.? Includes rigging, sail plans,
sail
trim, owners manual, review, and polar sail diagrams.? Polars are a
bonus
and suggest the boat can hit 7 knots.? Gives very explicit guidance on
heel
angles.? Takes some staring at to get the hang of reading
them.
?
Planned
path:
- Sort boat pictures
into Interior, Hulls, and Misc.? Create web-galleries for each.? Goal
is to share the photography we have.
- Begin to rebuild
owner registry tool.? UGH!? Plan to allow a "boat pic" by each
owner.?
- Research
forums.? Most stuff wants to hijack the site and I just want a simple
forum
without a content management system.? Suggestions
welcome.
?
?
If you have engine
documentation and forward it I will add it to the library for others.?
I
also plan to post the centerboard documentation that I have.?
:)
?
Thanks again for
your patience and I apologize that it isn't more alluring.?

?
Oh btw, the previous
site forums are lost from what I understand.? If someone wants to dig
through wayback.org you may be able to recover some of the content.?
Also,
digging in google's cache might return some of the content also.?
Sooner is
better than later.? Just search for Tartan27owners.com and then click
"cached" to see the cached content.? If you do manage to abscond
something
please put it in an email and send it to me.

Re: electric repower - solar panels

For those of you not quite ready to take the plunge to a totally electric motor I would suggest getting a solar panel for trickle charging your batteries. We mounted ours on the stern rail with a special mount they sell so no extra holes in boat or rails. Solar panel $90, rail mount @ $50, regulator $? - total project cost around $200. We have not had a problem with low battery power since adding the solar panel and keeping the batteries trickle charged all winter long in the garage.

The mounting hardware is shown just below the square panel

Of course, you will want to remove this panel from the stern rail in the event of a major blow or hurricane and you can quite easily.

Speaking of electric powered boats did anyone hear about the Swiss catamaran that crossed the Atlantic that was completely solar powered? They proved that it is feasible but what I do not like is there is no mast or sails to harness wind power.

I hope that everyone has a nice holiday this weekend. Happy Memorial Day!

Mike McDermott of Gloucester, MA converted his T27 yawl to electric
(EVAmerica) about three years ago. He has an electric wind generator for
battery charging on his mizzen mast. How cool is that? See

I'll try to find them in post them in a few days. It was really
economical as long as you weren't trying to motor long distance.
Even
then doing a diesel-electric made good sense.

Hull #1 Mimi was never converted to electric unless her owner which is
Tartan has did so in the last 6 months and I haven't got the word yet

Richard DeMott (sp) I believe was the owner who converted his T27 to
electric that was in the old discussion

electric repower

Dear Tartan List,

On the old site was a posting about converting the Tartan to an electric motor. If the poster subscribes to this list, please e-mail it to me. I'd like to do that conversion one day!

Thanks,

I managed to get the specs back online from the original
tartan27owners.com site. I also found some other interesting
documents that are worth reading.

WD,
On the 'Files' section of the group page there is a file called
information.htm which has a lot of dimensional info on the T27. With
some basic trigonometry you can figure out the lengths for all
shrouds and stays. I think that the relevant numbers you need are
these:

Sloop Yawl
I 34.65' 33.50'
J 9.83' 9.83'
P 30.50' 29.50'
E 13.50' 13.00'
PY 13.00'
EY
5.67'

All wire is 7 x 19 stainless

-- Standing Rigging Lower Shrouds--------
7/32" Upper Shrouds-------- 3/16" Forestay ------------
3/16" Backstay ------------ 3/16" Lifelines -------------

Does anyone know the lengths of the upper shrouds, forestay and
aftstay? I want to replace the standing rigging on "Gusto", a 1967
T-
27, hull # 284. She is a fine sailing vessel (I have owned her
twice)
but find I am not sailing her as she deserves due to concerns about
the
rigging being older.
