Re: Can I borrow your chain plates?

Re: Can I borrow your chain plates?
Agreed that 316 is best, but 316 will still rust slightly if the imperfections aren¡¯t polished out. My problem is that the boat is in Malaysia so it¡¯s hard to find the same quality and standards as at home. I found that I could attach a magnet to what was claimed to be stainless in some places. I gave my chain plates to the boatyard to duplicate, then quickly took them back when I saw them using a torch to cut them from a plate. I think the standard method is to use a water cooled saw and drill because heat degrades stainless. I head back in less than a month so might try to find some stock to bring with me, I think the back is 2¡± by 1/4¡± and the rest 1¡± by 1/4¡±. I don¡¯t remember any lengths though, maybe someone here can help me guess.

Can I borrow your chain plates?
Weird question, but if anyone has an old set I¡¯m needing them to send to a shop in Texas that will use them as a template for new ones.
Airport security didn¡¯t want me flying back with my set in my carry on so I had to leave them outside for some friends to pick up. Still not sure what they thought I was going to do with some pieces of stainless. If anyone does have them and it¡¯s not too inconvenient, I can send you a flat rate box with prepaid postage labels inside, then I¡¯ll send them back when the shop is done with them. I guess that all the chain plates should be the same, my tartan is a 1970 (around 450 I think). I have photos of the originals in the Argo album. The latest set I¡¯m replacing after 6 years ended up pitted and a little rusty because I didn¡¯t know to have them polished to a mirror finish, so this is why I¡¯m hoping to have them done at a shop that does electro- polishing. Thanks in advance, Scott [scotthoehn(at)gmail.com] |
Re: River trip from Peoria
Looks like I am going to arrive at Peoria tomorrow. Planning for IVY. I think the draft should be ok. I'm probably at 3.5 feet right now with the centerboard up.? Then I need figure out my plan to some how get to Grafton before the fuel dock closes for winter, get to Chicago for a concert on the 26th and for to California for? a week no later than Nov 2.? In theory I could reach Grafton by Friday. Or I could sell the concert tickets and take a little more time.? I know tall timber marina fuel dock closes on Oct 31st, but Grafton should be open another week or so. Maybe I just get to tall timber by Friday and then left town for a bit. So many choices :) - jeremy

Yes, bought in Philippines , is still on same mooring. Yes,? the " appendage " is still there , although not pleasing to the eye. Just curious , did he ever mention why he decided to ignore electrical precautions and instead bypass main fuse panel and wire direct ? Thanx again , John . --

Yes, Russ and I emailed a little in the years before?his death.?
Did you buy his boat in the Phillipines? And where is it now??
Russ put an appendage on the bow to keep breaking waves from covering the deck, is it still there? if so I'd love a photo.?
Russ probably sailed his T27-2 further than any other owner but he left little written record behind as far as I can find. john From: T27Owners@... on behalf of RC sailor24u@... [T27Owners]

Re: River trip from Peoria
I¡¯m planning on 8 hours per day. I have an Atomic 4,too.
Re noise, shouldn¡¯t be like a B-52. Is it cavitation get, or maybe exhaust noise? I should be in Peoria tomorrow and weekend. Let me know when you get to Peoria, or if you need any assistance before then. I recommend stopping at IVY (IL Valley Yacht Club). If you¡¯re on a budget you can anchor across from there or downtown across from city docks. -Bill 327 Duette |
Re: River trip from Peoria
How many miles per day are you planning on doing. I should be passing by your place in hull #154 in a few days. I am only looking to be underway four or five hours per day for the most part so only 20-30 nautical miles or so depending on how far it is to the next place to stop.? My hard limit is to be at Grafton Illinois by October 31st because I need to for sure get fuel and pump out service there and they are going to start winterizing in the early November. Also do you have a diesel or an atomic 4 engine. I have an atomic 4 and would love to cruise for a little bit in someone else's atomic 4 boat just to see if my engine and propeller sounds are normal or indicative of something wrong.? For example is the propeller supposed to sound like I'm in a B-52 bomber. I mean it is a propeller so it would make sense. ?- Jeremy On Oct 18, 2018 6:51 AM, "ackermwi@... I think the switch? on the 27-2 to windows that open was a huge improvement. I don't know if the holes are the same size.

?
Hi,
I'm getting some water leakage through one of the windows on my '76 Tartan 27. I'm planning to re-seat it and assume I'll find a crusty old seal or gasket under the frame. Any advice for replacing this?
Thanks

of the aluminum =| Can't find in my notes the size of the window glazing (rubber between the glass/plastic and aluminum frame). Old stuff has hard, brittle, and the channel full of algae. Re: Window repair
I have a 1965 T 27 hull #130 and there were no gaskets. I rebeded mine with butel tape. I unassembled the portal; outside aluminum extrusion, inside extrusion, barrel nuts and lense. I put the outside extrusion on my picnic table to work and filled the boatside of the aluminum with putty from the butel tape with the outside portion of the barrel nuts in place bedding around them. Hung the lenses in place with masking tape on the inside of the boat. Put the outside extrusion in place with the barrel nuts going through the holes around the opening. Put the inside extrusion on the inside with the other side of the barrel nuts meeting their counter parts on the outside and tightened them all going around a few times to make sure of evenness. I removed the tape leaving the unseen little bit under the inside extrusion. Two years; no leaks. If you use something like black G/E silicone from a tube which is fine if not better, leave a half turn on the barrel nuts to be tightened after cure for a good seal. You don't do that with the butel ( bad spelling I know ) tape because it doesn't cure. It stays soft. Hope this helped. Rick Gengarelly
