Google sunfish rudder dimensions 1971?and it will likely? pop up.? I made a cardboard pattern from the internet drawing, transferred it to a red oak board.? Cut it out, a bit of planning, drilling and sanding and four coats of urethane.? Works perfectly.?

I built my own rudder, tiller and extension, but bought standard sunfish parts for around $150.
- Stainless Steel Gudgeon Bracket for the Sunfish $13 (Intensity Sails)
- Rudder Tension Spring for the Sunfish?, Force 5 & Zuma? 2x$4 (Intensity Sails)
- Side Strap set for the Sunfish?, Zuma & Force 5 Tiller? $22 (Intensity Sails)
- Racelite Tiller Extension Swivel $13 (Duckworks)
- Sunfish, Rudder Cheek Assembly, 85126 $90 (SunfishDirect)
- Sunfish, Spring Post, 91175 $10 (SunfishDirect)
For the rudder I used extra marine plywood from my build (epoxied a 1/2" and 1/4") together. I followed the dimensions listed in the attached diagram. For the tiller and tiller extension I used scrap white oak.

This last photo does not show the tension springs and spring post installed.

I found the correct dimensions online somewhere. Actually I think it was from one of the people that regularly posts on this site ()
I made the tiller longer and tried sailing with it and found it was too long as it would hit my backside when I sat at the back of the cockpit. I would recommend making the tiller longer and see what works for you. As mine was for a sunfish clone my length. might not work you you.

That’s Ken Lewis’ site.? He also published a book called The Sunfish Manual that can be found on Amazon and is particularly useful for owners of older fishes.? He’s quite active on this forum. ? ?

I made my tiller the standard length but ?with a 16 inch pivoting extension.? Works fine for me, as a ?non competitive sailor that likes to go fast when I can.? I have Ken’s book and recommend it for all Sunfish owners.? I ‘ve had 4 different
small sailboats (dinghies) and the Sunfish is the most versatile, easy to rig, pretty fast, fairly stable and easy to right.? The people who designed this little boat pretty much got it right the first time.? It is no wonder that it is the most popular dinghy
ever made.
