Doug,
I agree they are expensive. I stumbled on the new style cheek and traded some tools for it. The oak board big enough to make the rudder was about $25…..so I got away cheap and I sold the old rudder for $60. I would not have done it if I had to buy
the whole assembly new.
Mr Mike
Nice. I’ll check it out.
Cost of converting is almost prohibitive. Can find a used Sunfish for around $400. Parts to convert Is that much.

Google sunfish rudder dimensions 1971 and it will likely pop up. I made a cardboard pattern from the internet drawing, transferred it to a red oak board. Cut it out, a bit of planning, drilling and sanding and four coats of urethane. Works perfectly.
Pay attention to the over center hole for the spring attachment so it pops up as designed. That was the only dimension the drawing did not provide. A good afternoons work and a few days for the urethane to dry hard
Mr MIke
So you acquired the new rudder cheek and used a new red oak “blank” to fit the rudder cheek? Might you come up with the dimensions? Interesting idea.
Thanks
Doug

I made a completely new rudder when I converted to the new style. The pattern iq quite different. I found dimensions on the internet somewhere and made it out of red oak. I sold the old one on Craigs List pretty quickly.
Mr Mike
Can you convert an “old style” rudder blade to a “new style” rudder cheek?

Sorry, I sent it as a followup to my for sale listing earlier that same day--a listing with the same subject wording. I figured this list is small enough folks could figure it out.

FYI, I would never reply to a message like this. There is no info, just a blind request to capture my email address. Where is this Sunfish? How much? Thenmaybe I would know if its even worth the electrons to answer. Thanks, Mike 76274.
