Re: Express Wind - Sunfish Clone

Wayne

Adi,

Take a look in the PHOTOS section at the "Other Fish" folder. Check
out the Barracuda photos. Does this look like your boat by any chance?

There are actually a more differences from the Sunfish. The
deck
has
molded in non-slip surfaces. The splash rail is molded in and
is
much
closer to the mast step. 2 Hiking/toe straps are installed on
the
walls of the cockpit. The dagger board is GRP with a wooden
head.
There is no line attached to it. It stays up because of carpet
friction. The rudder appears to be different from the Sunfish
rudders.
It is also GRP. I'm not sure yet if it is a kick up rudder or
not.
Tiller is Aluminium. I am not familiar with the Sunfish bottom,
but
this boat is smooth kind of like a scow. The boat appears
heavier
than 150 lb. It might be because of water soaked up by the foam
blocks
in the hull. The bow is not pointed like the Sunfish, but is
almost
as
if someone chopped off the nose on the Sunfish and closed the
hole
flat. There are no cleats on the hull (which kind of concerns
me).
There is a drain plug in the transom.

Some of my terminology may not be accurate. I am a newbie and I
haven't yet sailed much.

Re: Sail Ring SIze

Wayne Carney

Ed,

The commonly used hull speed formula is: 1.34 X the square root of LWL =
Speed (in knots)

A boat's LWL (Length at Water Line) is equal to the distance between the
wave
crests created at the bow and stern by the boat's motion through the water.

A boat rides in the trough between the two wave crests when it is at it's
theoretical maximum hull speed. In reality this formula was developed for
keel boats and many other factors including displacement, beam, and the
shape
of the bow and stern are also involved.

Planing hulls, such as centerboard dinghies, are capable of exceeding their
theoretical hull speed when they achieve a planing attitude. This is
accomplished under wind conditions that are strong enough to propel the boat
up it's own bow wave. The boat is lifted partially out of the water as it
rides
the crest.

Theoretical hull speed for a Sunfish having a LWL of 13.9' = 5 kt (6 mph)

LWL is probably a couple of inches shorter than the total boat length, but
this makes little difference in the results of the equation.

I don't know of a "fastest speed" figure. Maybe someone who races a lot
knows of a recorded speed. I have heard of people using the latest marine
GPS devices to clock speed, but so far nothing for a Sunfish.

As for busting stuff, yes there is a limit. Factors include crew weight,
wind velocity, equipment fatigue, and sailing technique. I have folded spars
by sailing close-hauled when I should have fallen off the wind - both for
efficiency and stress on the equipment. Then again I have all the ballast a
Sunfish can take and a little bit more ...and something has to give - and it
will.

Just as a note of trivia - theoretically, eliminating all friction,
something sail powered can achieve a speed triple that of the wind. Ice
boats designed for speed trials come very close. The speed record for a
sailboat - a trifoiler - is somewhere just over 50 mph in (I think) a 25 mph
wind.

Great, thanks for the measurements, Wayne, they match my "Fish-clone"
exactly. For now I am going to use tie-wraps until I order a set
of rings.

Just for fun.... How fast has a Sunfish actually gone? I would
guess that
there is a limit at which catastrophic boom/sail/mast failure could occur.

I have never approached top speed as I have yet to sail with
fewer than two
aboard.

Re: water in Sunfish

Wayne Carney

Hi Judy,

OK, having once been the owner of a 400 lb. bouncing baby Sunfish I can
relate to having a bit of water trapped in the hull.

I'll outline a couple of things here and let you apply what you feel is
appropriate.

Since the boat has gained a significant amount of weight I will assume that
the internal foam floatation has become waterlogged. To dry these foam
blocks out you will first need to install an inspection port - maybe two.
(see the "How To" at Wind Line Sails' web site)

You can passively dry the inner hull -
or you can use a hair dryer to actively dry it. Because of the extent that
my boat was waterlogged, I tried the active method first using one of those
portable hair dryers that uses a hose connected to a bonnet. I added a
vacuum cleaner hose extension and shoved the hose way inside the hull. In my
case I ran the hair dryer for a week without any significant improvement.
This leads to the next and more complicated approach.

If the foam blocks will not dry they will need to be replaced. This involves
separating the deck from the hull. It's involved, but not impossible - on
the older boats that have the aluminum trim around the hull to deck flange
it can work out well. I have not done this on the newer boats with the
rolled hull to deck flange and will have to make some inquiries to see how
its done.

If you decide you need to replace the blocks let me know and I will attempt
to guide you. There are some illustrated instructions around, but I can't
seem to find them at the moment.

Phase Dux ------

Since water has gotten into the hull I will assume there's another problem.

Sunfish can develop leaks at a couple of key points. The mast step, the
daggerboard trunk, and on older models the deck to hull flange and the
cockpit flange. The mast step is probably the most common leak point - but -
to be sure it is best to run a leak test.

This "How To" tells you how to find a leak.

Depending on what you find in the leak test will determine what will need to
be done beyond that.

As Doug Adams once said, "Don't PANIC"

Hope this helps,

Wayne

Re: water in Sunfish

Dave Jeffries

Hi Judy,

Is yours one with the drain plug on the upper right (starboard) side just forward of the cockpit ?
If so, are you propping the boat up so that the drain hole is down ?
If so, and no water is coming out (it may come pretty slow if the foam is soaked) you might inspect the drain hole to see that nothing is plugging it up from the inside (like a piece of dislodged foam).

If yours is one with the drain in the stern, again the flow may be slow and / or something may be plugging the hole.

After all the "loose" water is out then you will still have the challenge of the waterlogged foam to deal with.

Hi Judy,

Sounds like you have a real problem there.

Let's start with the basics - Have you opened the drain plug and tried
letting the water out?

Wayne

I have enjoyed sailing a sunfish for many years but can no longer
even pick up the boat to put in the water. The boat itself if
full of water that is in the hull and will not come out. Some
had suggested how to get the water out and fix it so water no
longer comes in but I lost the information. Can anyone help me.

Re: Sail Ring SIze

Wayne Carney

Ed,

I'll try and get a boom measured for you in the next few days. In the mean
time, if you want to go sailing you can use a couple of alternatives to the
"Shower Curtain Rings".

A down and dirty replacement is nylon zip-ties. They work great in an
emergency and are a (pardon me) zip to install on the fly. The down side of
zip-ties is that most are not made with a UV inhibitor in the plastic so
they get brittle and break after being exposed to direct sun for a couple of
months.

The other substitute commonly used is low stretch line. The reason for low
stretch is so you maintain an even sail edge. In the Sunfish Class FAQ page
Bishop Stieffel notes: "I recommend using spec 12 for sail ties. Tie an
over hand knot (the first half of a square knot ) through the grommet and
around the boom. Place a pen or pencil between the line and the boom and
finish the square knot - this helps you keep the sail tied at a consistent
distance from the spar. Sometimes, I've had square knots come loose, so I
make sure that I've cut my ties long enough to use each end of the tie's
leftovers to tie a half hitch around the sail tie".

As Bishop points out you want a little distance between the sail and the
boom. This is so the sail can take the proper shape.

Took my "Fish-clone" out this weekend amd broke 3 sail rings. I have
not been able to find any locally so can anyone tell me the diameter
of the real Sunfish boom? If my boom is the same size I could order
replacements form the web.

Thanks,

Ed

Hi,
Another option is to simply lace the sail on with any heavy nylon cord.
"Parachute" cord come to mind.
Two long cords in a spiral wrap would do nicely. One for each spar.
Works good on my 'fish.
