engine shuts off on steep downhills

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thank you all for the detailed answers on my problem. Looks like I am not the only one having this.

I would like to give a few more details on that (some of them allready mentioned in the previous answers)

#1 my vanagon is syncro so fuel tank is on the back and i do have the 12mm outlet like Richard mentioned below. The fuel tank was cleaned a year ago during the? conversion (i am a new conversion -only 3500 miles till now) ej25 2001 Legacy auto trans Euro specs.

#2 just checked my speed sensor with the diagnose device of my mechanic on the road and realized that the speed that sensor is reading is aprox 50% higher than the actuall vehicle speed,. We had 65km and the diagnose reading 100!! which is a lot more. Not sure if speed sensor fail may cause shut off on downhills. My speed sensor is attached on the speedometer on the dash

#3 i always run with the check code #38 (auto trans torque sensor)?

#4 i have cleaned both IAC valve + the throttle position sensor a couple of months ago

#5 engine shuts off when press the clutch to shift up but restarts emidiatelly with the 2nd (unless there is an uphill after the downhill ,in this case have to use the? ignition)

Definitely sounds like fuel, need to watch fuel pressure. Vanagons have a low rear outlet with fuel pump pulling about 2 feet away. vanagons also sometimes have an accumulator inline which also would help. Going downhill the pump may starve(usually make noise). If you don't have a pressure tester you can watch the O2 sensor, it will flatline at 0 volts if starving for fuel(otherwise be switching 0-1 volt). Verify you don't have the 7mm fuel tank outlet, only the 12mm should be used for conversion. I also think the Gowesty tank has some extra baffles to help this. you shouldn't need much fuel when going down hill, with no complaints going uphill under load would indicate pump, regulator and fuel restriction all are ok. Any idle control issues would be identified by holding a very slight throttle while driving, Its usually obvious. Long decelerations usually also trigger decel fuel shutoff. The ECM does turn it off under very high vacuum. Manuals may have problems if you go into decel in gear, then neutral or clutch halfway down. The engine will die because the computer is expecting auto trans. This will make O2 dive, but it will not effect fuel pressure. The problem needs to be identified as it happens. Replacing parts for me is stupid when you have no idea of what's going on. I have not even mentioned diagnosis with a scan tool... Yesterday I had a car that the customer spent over $3k trying to fix. I sold him 1 hour diagnosis and a vacuum hose... car fixed

IIRC the syncro speedometer is different than the 2wd and (also IIRC) there are different speed sensors.? I think this is written on the GoWesty sensor page

a possible different reason for a cut out depending on how fast?you are on down hills.......(at least?my) Subi has a cut out.shut off at like 120mph.? My CV speed sensor?reads 20% higher because I read off the 6 CV bolts rather?than the 5 point speed ring.? I've adjusted my Torque App to compensate and Torque shows GPS/Actual and ECU speeds within?1mph at all speeds with that adjustment.? The ECU still sees the 20% higher speed but I figure if its reading 120mph I'm doing 100 actual which is fast enough....I think the highest I've ever gotten actual was 87mph downhill with the wind.....Now actual speed readings to the VW gauge speedometer, that's a totally different story :-P

???????????????????? Hey AG

???????? I'd start by making sure ECU has accurate info,,, My VDubaru is a 90 2wd Westy with 01EJ25 & the VSS is in the Speedo

which without help provides incorrect speed info to the ECU,,, Back in 2011 I installed a Dakota Digital SGI5 to correct that & I

suggest that You might want to give that a try,,, The SGI5 doesn't seem to be available anymore but Dak'Digi' has an STA-1000

which appears to be a more sophisticated modern tech replacement ~

??????? Another thing You might want to look into is if Your ECU can be switched to Manual,,, My 01 ECU can do that via a jumper,,,

Not sure if that would help but might be worth a shot ~ I actually keep mine in AT mode 'cause I like the extra 75RPM it provides

@ Idle which helps to keep the OilPressure up several PSI ~

??????? A correction >> Looks like maybe the Dakota Digital SGI-100BT is what will work in place of SGI-5 ~~
