Re: EJ25 high fuel consumption
My fuel mileage, last I checked, in my 1987 Westy 2.2L with MT (higher geared 4th synchro) was running 17-23mpg.? I live in Florida, so we don't have a lot of hills, or snow.? The evaporator system in Vanagons will smell "fuely" on a full tank, if it isn't working perfectly, but that shouldn't affect your fuel mileage.? Definitely check your lines.? If you are still running the plastic fuel line from front to back, it may be a good time to replace it.

Re: EJ25 high fuel consumption
Fuel economy only comes when many separate systems operate properly. Fuel supply can never leak!!! Don't ever drive a car that you can smell fuel, we are out of the 1900's. Compression, brakes, alignment, transmission, electrical system and finally engine management. If everything else ok, the oxygen sensor operation needs to be verified. A flatline O2 will take 5 MPG or more ( chrysler will kill the car). The newer the ECM, the more control the O2 has.? Richard Stratford ?

Re: EJ25 high fuel consumption
Wow! Is my math right, you are getting an average of 4 miles per gallon? Double wow!!
I get an average of 18 miles per gallon under normal conditions and 12 miles per gallon fully loaded at high altitude with a 40mph headwind. You must have a leak somewhere. Isn't there a fluorescence test you can do? Best of luck. -- Freedom van Go 1989 Westy, 3.3L SVX |

Re: EJ25 high fuel consumption
Hi, 2WD fuel tanks often rust thru on top, where dirt collects in the "groove". ? I don't know about syncro tanks. Larry A.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSimilar issue with my EJ2.2, bad MPGs and smell of fuel. Found a fuel hose that was cracked and fuel spraying out. Luckily I replaced it in time and my van didn¡¯t burn down. Find the problem soon. You shouldn¡¯t be smelling gas.? On Feb 17, 2024, at 9:30?AM, Ryan C <candagrm@...> wrote:

Crawl under it while it's running, Hand brake on and wheels chocked), look for leaks. Tighten all hoses and connections. Mine is only 2wd but gets close to double your mileage. I also can smell the fuel right after stopping. What should I look into? How I can identify the issue? Or it is an expected consumption? Re: Where does vacuum for air lockers tie into Subaru?
Thank you guys so much.
Please forgive my lack of decorum. I am only the 2nd owner of a 1986 Syncro tin top with a 2.5 n.a. motor out of a 2004 Forester. I had 2 previous 2.2s in it over the years, I bought it in 93, prior to this 2.5 I have not had a chance to address the lockers as this motor has been kicking my butt. Crazy surging idle, and getting stuck at 3000+rpm. I would turn it off and coast to light and restart which would do some sort of reset and after 2 or 3 of those it would calm down. I replaced every valve and sensor w/ oem parts and even bought 3 or 4 different ECMs from eBay which would not even start my motor. Finally a friend brought over a smoker and the only leak anywhere in the system was coming from the middle of the EGR valve. I quickly whipped out a blanking plate from the thin metal squeak liner from the back of a disc brake pad and bolted the EGR back on over it and problem solved. TPS actually adjusted to and held at .5 idle I have watched videos and read stories of people getting 20+ mpg in same van / motor setup but I can't seem to do better than 10 to 13. Not sure if this is a permanent solution. ??¡á? |

FWIW, I like the whole conversation (not trimmed) to see contents in context. Data, especially text only data, is a non-issue these days. Andy 505-304-5306 On Mon, Feb 5, 2024, 1:44 PM Bob Stevens <mtbiker62@...> wrote:
