Morning John.
I don’t know of any custom intake manifolds for our subs engines other than those offered by vendor Outfront Motors. ?They are beautiful but they ain’t cheap at around $1800 USD.

I don’t see whether they actually reduce the height as compared to your stock intake though.

One other way to allow the engine to ride a bit higher is to hack, scrape, and grind the vanagon engine cover so that the fiberglass or plastic cover frame and foam insulation is reduced, allowing the intake more headroom.

At this point I’m thinking that your planned route of installing a chopped oilpan is going to get you the best clearance.

Best of luck with your project.
Brent

Re: Recommendations for Starting Battery

Edited

Everstart Group 41 always worked for me with an 02 2.5L in my 88 AT. A ground cable from the starter ground to the frame is recommended. See threads on theSamba. The 86-91 VW starter is just adequate. I went with a high torque Bosch starter from an 02 Jetta TDI manual diesel with the WestyVentures adapter.
?
Edit: the WestyVentures adapter is now available from T3 Technique and also RMW(VanCafe)

Good afternoon.
To answer your primary question:? There are no special requirements for a vanagon battery which will be starting and running a Subaru engine.
Since I’m hoping to halt a battery thread before it starts I will say that this topic is better suited for other forums/groups.

This may seem like an off-topic question, but I wonder if the cranking requirements for starting an EJ22 are different from the requirements for a stock 2.1L waterboxer. So, I wanted to see what folks with conversions are using.

Also, what group? I will probably stick with Group 41, but I've heard a lot of talk about Group T5 being a better fit under the passenger seat.

Vivid used to be up here in BC too. They were not known for being particularly good about getting repairs done on time and also they’d take piles of money upfront and there was some reports of people getting ripped off etc.

I’ve met the guy who owns it and he was always cool to me, just saying it didn’t end well up here?

I believe that for CA the KEP catalytic converter is the Walker cat, which you can get from KEP. The stamp on KEP's and SCP's cat is the same, so it refers to the same ARB EO, and should be no problem with BAR.

Re: bogging

Bogging happens warm or cold. Just more evident when warm. Its not coolant sensor. Been replaced 2 yrs ago and is reading correctly.

Re: bogging

Certainly sounds like it could be running lean, what's the long term fuel trim and front o2 sensor read with your scan gauge??

If it's not a fueling issue or the o2 sensor is borked and it thinks the lean condition is stoich, you'll see the reading oscillate around 0.5v and fuel trim will be close to zero.

If the o2 sensor is fine and it knows it's running lean but it's already added as much fuel as it's allowed to via fuel trim, you'll see the o2 reading pegged below 0.5v indicating a lean condition (over 0.5v is rich) and the trim will be more like +20% (or whatever it's limited to)

Try unplugging the o2 sensor and if it runs fine in open loop you know its bad.. this will set a code. I'm assuming it wasn't already showing any codes.

It'd be worth quickly checking the ignition coil/s, leads and valve cover gasket as it very well might be misfiring under load... What do the spark plugs look like? If it's running lean I'd expect them all to be white.. if it's a misfire they'd be black and damp

The injectors could be clogged? Does your engine have a MAF or MAP sensor, with a MAF a vacuum leak will cause a lean condition

It's very hard to diagnose an issue over the internet with minimal information, you might have to describe what it's doing in a bit more detail
