Is 1/2 HP really enough?
10
New to the group, just picked up my first SB (1952 10K) which came with a 1/2 HP Westinghouse motor. Not sure but motor at least looks original. Anyone know what these machines came with new? Poor thing is struggling to take even a 20 though cut. Is it possible that something is keeping it from making full power? Start cap starts it right up, but not sure if the run cap could possibly be causing a problem. Any help would be appreciated. Machine was in pieces when I found it a few days ago, here's a pic..

SB9 Belt Adjuster/Tensioner
5
Hello all, new here so I'm hoping this is getting sent to the right place. I just picked up a 1947 C9-10JR.Most of it is there and looks pretty decent, after a quick clean it seems like everything will polish up nicely. My problem is I'm missing the rods and adjuster nut for the belt tensioner. I'll have to make something up but I need a belt and would like to know the length of the adjuster, pin to pin. I know I can make it whatever to fit whatever belt I get but would like to get the original pieces one day and not have to change the belt again if my guess is off. I have seen the parts picture online for sale and could try to figure out the length from that, they don't seem to deliver to Canada. If anyone knows the length or could tell me where else I could look it would be greatly appreciated.

S B 9 UMD inside door label
4
Still restoring my UMD 9 inch which I am converting to a 10K. The back side of the door that accesses the belt change area has an instruction label. If anyone has one that the label is decent would you please email a photo of it to me. I know a long shot as most are probably ruined. I replaced the drawer guides with Accuride ball bearing slides. Not easy but worked out well. If anyone would like a photo of this let me know. Cabinet close to being sprayed gray. I use Axalta Nason two part automotive paint. leaves a nice durable finish. Much appreciate. Click my name and the email will show up.

V belt under drive pulleys for 9 in. Cabinet lathe information
5
I need information concerning the difference between the v belt outdrive pulley on a 9in. tool room cabinet model and the outdrive v belt pulley on a 9in. horizontal lathe. The part number is the same on the spindle cone pulley for both but the part numbers for the outdrive pulley are the same except the tool room cabinet has a 1 on the end and the horizontal has a 2 on the end. I have a set of v belt pulleys from a horizontal but I really need to know if there is any difference before I start the tear down to install them. Any help is appreciated.

Cabinet to mount lathe
14
I am finally getting to the point where I can mount my 9" South Bend lathe on something in the shop. It is a horizontal drive workshop model probably from the late 1930s. I would like to have it on some kind of a base with storage as my shop space is small. Elsewhere I have come across people who have mounted theirs on a tool chest base from Harbor Freight or Home Depot or similar base cabinet. I'm thinking that I would not use casters but mount the cabinet base to the floor and add an additional top to the cabinet. Harbor Freight and Home Depot both have tool cabinets 22" to 24" or so deep or a little more while most similar cabinets are 18" deep. Do any of you have experience with this kind of tool cabinet used as a base for a lathe? I'd like to get one in the $500 to $600 range, otherwise instead of spending more I will just build a bench to put the lathe on, but the idea of a cabinet full of drawers appeals to me. Thanks for suggestions! Jim in Western Wisconsin

Heavy 10 Tailstock Pin Replacement update
here's what I just got from Steve Wells about tailstocks Mike, It's common on the letter series lathes and Workshop lathes that have the rib cast in the front. If the 286 part number is listed, that is the pressed in round key. This key could be ground to a few different widths for the quill keyways. The 10K style Tailstock quill which was used on the re-designed 10L upper casting is different. It is a 285KR, a square key pinned in the quill. South Bend 9 and 10k UMD AS2607NK2 Bracket
5
I am in the process of doing a rebuild on a SB 9 UMD. There is a bracket behind the upper part of the UMD unit. My bracket is broken and the broken piece is gone. Mine has a hole in it that has a return spring of some sort. Where the hole is where mine is broken. SB parts catalog shows it as AS2607NK2 part number. I found one on ebay but the seller states it is the later style with no hole. Can anyone tell me what that bracket is for? Also, does anyone have one of those? Much appreciate if someone can help with this. Thanks, Larry

SB milling attachment wanted
This is the second time I have posted this request for a milling attachment and the replies were posted on a different email address that I didn't check. So I'll try again with the other email address. dogbreath312@.... If anybody has a nice milling attachment for a reasonable price email me along with a picture of the attachment. If it is at all rough looking please don't bother. I don't want any mills that have been hit by tooling or torn up. '

9in. Milling attachment

I’m looking for a nice reasonably priced milling attachment for my refurbished tool room lathe. eBay prices are obscene and I do know the pros and cons of these units. I have a clausing mill but for quick jobs this would be nice. If anybody has a nice unit , no junk, and reasonably priced let me know

1945/6 1/4 hp motor - original - disassembled
Hi, Folks, The fellow I bought my lathe from reported that the original motor did not run, so he had disassembled it with an eye to fixing it. He had mounted another motor on the lathe...and that has served me well. I offer the "motor in a box" to whomever wants it--deal to be struck that is mutually agreeable. The seller was a neighbor, whom I knew to be meticulous. The small parts are in Ziploc bags. Pictures are available. I've attached a pic of the nameplate and oil cup. davidwpennington@...
