New Guy

Hi everybody, thanks for letting me join.I don't own a South Bend but I have been looking into stepping up from my 6" craftsman (Atlas). The South Bends definitely interest me but I'm not familiar with them,so I joined here hoping to get some input& knowledge about them so when I start looking to buy, hopefully in the somewhat near future,I can have a better idea what to look for & lookout for.
Thanks
Bill

Speaking as a guy who owns an Atlas TH42 and a South Bend Heavy 10L in need of a great deal of restoration after spending at least 5 years in a leaky barn, and having used South Bend 9" lathes in a high school class about 50 years ago, get the South Bend if you can, but an Atlas will be better than nothing if you can't find a South Bend. ;) I like my Atlas! I'm absolutely certain I'll love my Heavy 10L. The Atlas is about 267lbs. The 10L is 1067lbs. The extra weight helps a lot with stiffness and dampening vibration. I've not even seen a 9" South Bend since that high school class, but even they are heavier than the Atlas lathes, so unless it's a real wreck, you'd probably be better off with a 9" South Bend.?

It all depends on what's available in your area. I spent 34 years looking for any old lathe. Finally settled for a Harbor Freight 93212 Mini-Lathe in 2008. Found my TH42 in 2015, and got the Heavy 10L from Bill Hinkle in 2018, and it's been sitting on hold since 2020...?

Fortunately, I have the Atlas to help me with stuff I might need to make for the 10L.?

Yes I agree,I've looked at some 10" Atlas lately& almost bought one but decided to wait I really feel that I want something more hefty.ive been really happy & somewhat surprised at what that little 6" Atlas has been capable of.That being said I have nothing against the atlas' but south bend just seems better.?

Welcome to the group?
You find the 9" was designed To be full function lathe for laboratory,? electronics auto, any where just need a small lathe.
The 10K is almost the same lathe only adds 3/4" to the swing and it take a 5/8" collet.?

Dave?

??? ??? Folks need to keep in mind when looking for a SB that there's 2 different 10" lathes? the 10 K like mentioned below with the small spindle bore & the Heavy 10 with the larger spindle bore , I ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? believe the heavy has? @ 1.375 while the 10 K is under 1" .

Thanks, this is the type of info that I'm looking for!I understand the difference in models A,B,C but it seems there are different versions of the 9"?415, Junior & it seems like there were a couple others too.Can I tell a 9 from a 10k in a picture,or a 10k from a 10L?just trying to be educated about it

??? ??? You can turn a 9B into a 9A much easier that a 9C to a B or A . The C does not have the keyway cut in the lead screw? & I? think there may be a difference on the left side of the leadscrew also ,

??? ??? but don't quote me on that . You might search the files section & get a copy of HTRAL or How to run a lathe if no one has mentioned before .

??? Theres also some folks worth checking out on youtube? , mrpete22 , Joe Pie , Blondihacks just to mention a few .

Yes Mr pete is one of my favorites & I've watched e few of the others.i have a paper copy of HTRAL that I keep on hand usually to freshen up on threading before I cut any threads etc.i have read it through awhile ago but just use it for reference mostly.im not an expert by any means but also far from new to machining.Aside from my little Atlas lathe I also have a Rockwell vertical mill.I work weekends at a CNC shop but we've got about half a dozen Bridgeports, around 8 Hardinge lathes,a Colchester& a few others.I started life in my Dad's automotive machine shop, where we did complete engine overhauls.Just a little of my background.?

I picked up a new bench for my SB 9 from Home Despot for not much money.? I am quite pleased with it. It seems well built, the drawers are great and it is just the right size.? It comes with both wheels and leveler screws.? It sure beats the 1950s steel desk I used before.

Yeah I've had a couple slivers,& I'm not sure about the endmills,we used to sharpen them but now it seems like they just buy new.Me being on the weekend shift I don't see much of what goes on most of the time.they have probably 120 employees but? only 4 of us there on the weekends.

I also have a SB 9 B.? I have had it for a decade or so.? It is a good little lathe.? The spindle bore is a bit limiting, probably my biggest complaint.? I have been toying around thinking about getting something bigger, maybe a turret lathe as that would help with the bigger swing and bore size as well as helping with repetitive tasks.

The SB 9 is a wonderful lathe for learning on.? I think of the flat belts as a fuse. I keep them just tight enough so they will slip when I do stupid stuff.

You're right there!!No office creatures,no management just a supervisor on call if we need him.Working Fri,Sat&Sun nights 3-12s& paid 40.I guess its got advantages& disadvantages like any job.

You can put a quick change on to a 9C.?
But you only have threading and power feed using threading.??
