Home shop adventures
16
I've been on a "git 'er done" home shop rampage for the last few weeks. Ran a dedicated 220 circuit to the garage. Learned how to bend half inch EMT and did that without screwing up a single piece of conduit. Got a 1hp Fuji VFD for the Bridgeport and a 3hp Fuji VFD for the 14.5" South Bend from the nice folks at Wolf Automation. Put up a nice belt drive garage door opener on the shop side of the garage this weekend. That's what is prompting me to write this post. In the process of hanging the garage door opener, I had to drill a couple of holes in a piece of regular old angle iron. I was using a nothing fancy hand held DeWalt drill and the set of drill bits that I normally use for household tasks. The drill didn't seem to be working as quickly as I had expected, maybe because this drill and drill bits usually get put to work on wood and drywall. Anyway, I put the drill in reverse at one point to back out a drill bit. Chucked in a larger drill bit and went to open up the hole I was working on in the angle iron and the drill worked like total crap. It wouldn't drill worth two cents. I chucked in a bit one size smaller and got the same result. I went up to 5/16 of an inch on the drill size and that worked like crap too. After looking things over for a minute, I realized I had been working with the drill in reverse for the last few sizes I had attempted. AAAARGH!!! After a quick trip to the basement and a touch up of the drill bits on the bench grinder, I returned to the garage, put the drill in FORWARD, and drilled the holes in the angle iron as if it were made of butter. So, what's the moral of this story? Drink more coffee before picking up a hand drill? Don't work with my glasses all sweated up? Engage Brain before using tools? How many engineers does it take to drill a hole in a piece of angle iron? I have no idea, but I thought this would make some of you smile. Thanks, George H. Meinschein, P.E. Looking for SB9A apron and countershaft assy
Hi folks, Picked up a rusty 644Z cutie recently that’s missing the carriage apron and a few other things. According to Ebay the apron is cast gold and gears are Inconel, or so the asking prices suggest... If someone has a reasonably priced apron assy, or parts of it, I’d appreciate a pointer. Looking for the countershaft assy too but that’s longer term. Thanks!

Travelling steady/follower rest fixing bolt size and location.

-- Hello, I am UK based and am restoring a 1937 South Bend "modelR" bench lathe (none operational at the moment) . I understand that the 9" swing model R is now rare, but I wonder if the more common "Workshop 9"" lathe may use a steady that would fit straight onto my machine. Kind regards Richard Pender

First lathe rebuild questions
23
I just bought my first lathe (9" 744 A 167045) and I have some questions. It is covered with surface rust, and the motor has been disconnected. 1) Does anyone have a wiring diagram to connect the motor (GE 5kc63ab776) to the barrel switch and a power cord? 2) Is the ILION rebuild kit and "Guide to Renovating" (Amazon $80) the way I should proceed? 3) What gray (It was originally gray right?) brush-able paint would you recommend? Thanks in advance,

MLA tools

I received a email from MLA tools http://mlatoolbox.com/index.html so it appears they are still in business. I did send in payment for 2 items we will see how it goes. Andy Lofquist, founder of Metal Lathe Accessories, decided it was time to pass the ownership of the business onto my brother Jared and me. Andy is still involved with Metal Lathe Accessories but has moved into the role of mentor. Jared and I will continue to offer the quality kits and instructions that Andy has been providing the machining community for all these years. We appreciate your patience during this transitionary period and look forward to many more of years of Metal Lathe Accessories. For your convenience, I have included our pricing for the requested items below. If you are still interested, payment can be made via Payal at mlatoolbox@... Once you provide a shipping address along with payment, we will process your order. Thanks again and we look forward to hearing from you! Pass this along to whoever you think will be interested. -- Bill From Socal

Heavy 10 gearbox
8
Hi group, Over the years now in then I need the use of my wide rangedouble tumber gear box for cutting screw threads. The problem is I do not have rotation to my lead screw in E,F,G speeds only A -D speeds. Could it be a broken key in the 3large power gears? I read some where only the first 2 large gears are keyed.Need your thoughts Bill

Adapted a 9” steady rest for my 10L
3
Like others before me, I found it difficult to find a steady rest for my Heavy 10. I found this nicely made one for a 9” SB that has a 5” bore size. With 5” to work with and being made out of whatever steel that’s NOT cast iron, I figure can be converted to work on my 10L. No elaborate planning here… just measure, cut, weld, and mill as needed. Without any fiddling ( just dropping the 3 telescopic pieces down), I can get +/- 0.001” with a 2ft long bar stock that I plan on making into a drawbar for one of my mills. Here are the pics.

Cover for cross slide screw with TTA
2
Evening all, Please find attached 3 photos of a cover I recently knocked up for the purpose of keeping swarf out of the cross slide screw on the railway's 14.5" x 6' toolroom SB. I have seen these illustrated on this group, and they look like a fancy piece of factory impressed metal. Mine is just a piece of spare sheet left over from another job, maybe 1mm thick. I folded a small flange on the edges to make it stiff. The anti rotation feature is just a standard socket head cap screw, 8mm in this case I think, grade unimportant, with just a light shave removed from both sides with a grinder, and this is shown in the photo with the cover removed & inverted. The pivot hole is not central (dimensions not provided - make it to suit your lathe). When it runs out of travel, just reverse it. I have proved that it covers the gap down which the bad stuff falls at all positions of the cross slide. The 2 ends are ever so slightly panned upwards in order to ride up over the joint where the slotted piece meets the cross slide proper. The inscription is simply because this is a common user lathe. By heck, how you have to watch 'em! Cheers, Eddie

4
Hey all, https://jerseyshore.craigslist.org/tls/d/neptune-southbend-lathe-model/7610634092.html $1500. I can see that it has a double tumbler, taper attachment, thread dial, a steady rest and a bunch of collets. I already have a 14.5” toolroom and I’m still tempted to drag it home, but that would risk me getting killed or worse. -George M.

V Belt
8
Hi folks, My friend has a 9A horizontal with a VFD. He bought a new Gates V belt but says it's shakes at fast speeds, when he's trying to get a good finish, so put the old one back on. He rebuilt the counter shaft already. Is there are difference between the name brand products? Thanks, Payson.

Looking for a steady rest
9
Hey Folks. I am looking for a steady rest for a 10L Heavy. Anybody got a spare you're looking to sell? I know that the 9 & 10K rests are basically the same (or exactly, IDK). But can anyone out there tell me if a steady rest from another SB lathe is the same as (or will fit on) the 10L heavy? Maybe I'm limiting my search too much and need to start looking for steady rests that will fit the 10L heavy AS WELL AS the XXXXX? Thanks, Greg

Reintroduction to South Bend Lathe Group
14
Good afternoon folks, I was on the Yahoo South Bend group for many years, but I didn't transition over to the groups.io. A while back hopping that it might rekindle my interest in machining. I rejoined the South Bend and several other groups once on Yahoo. Unfortunately it hasn't help me regain the "bug". I still machine something when I need a part made around the house or garage, but I don't want to make another engine or complex project. I've made 3 Stuart's, 10V, James Coombs, and Beam. Plus I got side tracked doing production jobs with three turret lathes. At 67 years old and declining health, it maybe time to get some of the remaining "big stuff" out of the basement. and no it's not a walk out. I sold my Bridgeport, Hardinge HCT, Hardinge HLV, and one DSM-59, about five years ago. I still have one old (1951) DSM-59, It's going soon! I have a nice South Bend 10K UMD (Daejung Korea, hard bed) that I need to sell with lots of tooling. It will be in the Marketplace, if I can figure how to get it there. The 10K isn't as heavy as a HLV, but two people can't carry it up steps in one piece. It has a NOS turret, never used, that is included. Why? use a SB turret with three Hardinge turret lathes, long story. Sorry 9 inch guys, fits the bed, but too low to line up to the center line. Anyway, I hate to join this group just to advertise, but I'd rather give someone here a chance before I put it on Graiglist, or that auction site. The old Yahoo group was good to me and even if all of those folks are gone, the new folks here I'm sure are just as nice. I hope this thread does not violate any guidelines, thank you. Regards Charley Holt.
