Heavy 10 Cross Slide Backlash
4
Oh, South Bend wise people, I still have a strange little problem with my Heavy 10. Feeding in with the cross slide works just like you would expect. Feeding out, like say cutting an internal bore/thread, there is a small amount of “spring”, for lack of a better term. I have a taper attachment, but I don’t think that’s the issue. There is clearly backlash in the cross slide, as I can pull/push the compound and get a 0.015” in-out movement. That’s probably problem 1. Still, the little elastic spring when feeding out is weird. I go to make a cut, and set the dial for 0.020”. The dial springs back to indicate a 0.018” cut, and the actual cut is somewhere in-between. Not a big deal, and I can easily do decent work now that I understand it, but I would love to have it go away. Anyone every have this happen? Before I buy a new cross slide nut, I wanted to ask. I used to see cross slide and compound nuts with a built-in backlash adjustment capability, but I just searched amazon and ebay and found no mention of them anymore. Anybody know anything about these things? Can I make one? Don Westtown, PA

QCTP Height Adjustment Screw
29
Hey Guys, Recently acquired a Phase 2 tool post for my SB9c. I also acquired a couple tool holders that are missing the height adjustment screw. One has a threaded hole for the adjustment stud, and the other has a smooth bore. I have read elsewhere that the stud is 3/8-24, but when I check another stud ( from a separate holder) with the pitch gage, 24 does not check. Thinking maybe metric, the stud measures 9.75mm in diameter with a 1mm thread pitch. I guess for the smooth bore hole, I can make a stud with a tight fit and thread the protruding end 3/8-24. Is anyone aware what the correct thread diameter and pitch are for the adjusting screw? Both holders are no-name imports. Thanks!

Modifying an Aloris tool holder
15
I use an Aloris BXA tool post holder on my Heavy 10, with great success.....up to now. I bought, and then discovered, that the BXA-22 Universal Turning and Boring Holder is too big, specifically too tall, to work with my lathe. The tool point is about 1/8" above center with the block down on the compound. I touched the holder with a file, and it seems pretty hard. Anyone ever machined down an Aloris tool holder? QCTP Holders
6
Afternoon, I just recently acquired a QCTP (Phase 2 250-100) for my SB9c that came with a few holders. 250-202, 250-207, and 250-110. I will be needing additional holders, but am confused on what model to get. From what i have found the 250-100 holder is AXA and will work on a 9-inch lathe. However, what I have also found is the the 250-202 holder is actually for a BXA post, which is too big for a 9-inch lathe. Will either or the 250-202 or 250-101 work on the 9-inch SB? What size/designation should I be shopping for, and where would you guys suggest I look? Thanks, Greg

Have telescoping 10" steady rest, want 9" one.
6
I am looking for a telescoping steady rest for a 9" lathe. I have one for a 10" lathe and would like to trade for the 9" one. The 10" one is in good shape, no welds or other fixes. I am in the silicon valley area. I also have a belt guard (4137K1) for a counter-shaft belt motor for a 9 or 10 inch lathe, maybe others. This one appears to be for the setup where the belts (large pulley) are on the right instead of the usual ones with the belts on the left. It is also in good shape.

Heavy 10 Tailstock Pin Replacement update
here's what I just got from Steve Wells about tailstocks Mike, It's common on the letter series lathes and Workshop lathes that have the rib cast in the front. If the 286 part number is listed, that is the pressed in round key. This key could be ground to a few different widths for the quill keyways. The 10K style Tailstock quill which was used on the re-designed 10L upper casting is different. It is a 285KR, a square key pinned in the quill. 9" 10K double tool cross slide parts
I have some parts for a 9" or 10K for the double tool cross slide for just the shipping if anyone is interested. The stop 809NK1, rack 820NK1, and rack support 804NK1. Page 30 and 31 in the Army manual. I'm in the 90501 zip code to compute what shipping might be. Parts together weigh 1 lb. plus packaging. Got these with a large dial purchase even though I said I didn't want them. If you live close to that zip I may even deliver just to get out of the house. ? 1/4" spacing on the graph paper. -- Bill From Socal

Dickson / Bison toolpost dimensions
7
Dear all, Does anybody have a Dickson / Bison S3 or T3 size toolpost on which they could please measure the distance between centres of the mounting Vees? I have a toolholder that is a none standard length, somewhere between sizes 2 & 3, and none of my web searches have turned up this vital piece of i/d information. I'm hoping it is a size 3, but I have no access to anything with which to compare it. I attach a photo of this holder with a tape measure laid upon it. Measuring with a ruler, I get the following: The centre distance between the Vees is just under 92mm, the pulling feature narrow gap is 39mm, the wide gap is 50mm and the overall depth of the rear face recess is 15mm (all to nearest mm). Is there perhaps another name that copied the concept but with different size ranges? Eddie
