Re: Oil

Go figure indeed! They don't need to sell much to get rich, and they probably have a glowing highly suspect technical description of how wonderful it is, so someone will buy it.

I'd use your Lucas. The SB lathe spindle is not by any stretch of the imagination an extreme application.

In British Rail's Diesel engine section at HQ we had an immensely thick file on fuel additives that snake oil salesmen tried to sell us, all aimed at saving fuel. A few got as far as a lab engine test without getting any further, as they cost more to buy than the fuel they saved (or didn't save). With the exception of 1, now I come to think of it. Water. We ran a 2500 HP Sulzer engine in traffic on a water fuel emulsion for a while, and saved a lot of fuel. The experiment unfortunately got terminated when someone shut down the engine for a weekend without running it on neat fuel for a few minutes first. By Monday, the jerk pumps were rusty internally. Ho hum.

Eddie

Indeed. The U.S. Gallon is 3.7854 liters (litres on your side of the pond).

A gallon of Lucas ISO 22 oil costs here $6.08 which is 4.97 UK Pounds. And this is the cheapest I found.

More interesting is that I found a couple of providers offering a similar gallon size for $133. Go figure.

And presumably you are talking gallons of 3 3/4 litres, rather than gallons of 4.5 litres. Standard container size here now is 4 litres or 20 litres rather than gallons and 5 gallons that we had when I was a lad. 25 litres existed for a while, but seems to have now rationalised to 20. Next size up is 205 litres, aka "barrel", a size chosen to eliminate arguments about the requirement to store containers on sealed bunds, since that starts at 200 litres.

South Bend spindle oil is nothing special. All the old names are probably obsolete. Any brand of ISO 22 viscosity (i.e. 22 centistokes at 40 degrees C) spindle oil will do. It should be quite a bit cheaper than the prices that folk here have been suggesting. Talk to your industrial oil merchants, not machinery merchants. Here in the English county of Derbyshire I have 3 suppliers within 20 miles of home. While you're collecting, you might like to pick up some ISO 68 slideway oil, also of any old brand, since that is the stuff for SB slideways. Google will find them for you, or if you really are isolated, try ebay.

On the same subject, I discovered recently that the modern generic equivalent of the Shell branded name unobtainable oil recommended for Colchester lathe main and feed gearboxes is just any old ISO 32 hydraulic oil.

Eddie
