Re: Home Shop Machinist Magazines

That would be about what I expected. And if you're willing to ship, I'm willing to prepay, so you don't have to do it out of your own pocket. If you take Paypal, anyway. I'd be willing to use PP Friends and Family, so there would be no cost to you to get your money. And if you go over a bit, I'd be willing to cover that, too. I REALLY want those magazines. ;) OTH, I'll also understand, as I said, if you don't want to go through the trouble. Because it WILL be trouble.?

True, but it is possible, as i bought 18 years of back issues (6-12 issues at a time sometimes 99C per and sometimes up to $6 per issue), from an eBay seller and have a few dozen shipping boxes to show for it. HSM, MW, DM, and Live Steam
.
This offer at about $1.25 is an excellent bargain seeing as 99c was 7 years ago. Don't kick yourself for not acting. The eBay guy is still there if you want to wait at 99c-up.
.
This effort would possibly be 4-5 boxes, 200 issues at 50 per box? 40 per box? altho. 40 years would be 480 issues of HSM 240 + MW240 plus a few specials, so there are still some missing issues....
.
Your call
.
Good Luck

Jim,

If you were to box them up, a buyer could call USPS, UPS, FedEx and they could come to your house and pick up the boxes.?

It would increase your chances of selling the collection faster, and the only extra work for you would be to put the magazines in boxes, tape them closed, and write the lucky buyer's address on the front.?

The cost will be the only item possible buyers will have to see if it is agreeable with their budget or not.?

Best of luck.

Re: Help with hand wheel

I forgot to mention. I measured the ends of the taper pin that holds it in place. It only just sticks through both sides. Large end 0.23", small end 0.20".

Obviously you will probably have to ream through lightly. to get a good fit on the new pin, so BEWARE: Imperial standard taper pins & reamers are 1/4" per foot, i.e. 1 in 48, whereas metric ones are 1 in 50. Don't know where you are, but in the UK, the current retail default is metric.

I also noticed that for some reason, ours also has a small Allen grub screw at about 90 degrees to the pin, and I have no intention whatsoever of opening that potential can of worms until I have to!

Cheers,

Eddie

Please see attached for the carriage handwheel on our 1943 built 14.5 x 6' toolroom at the Golden valley Light Railway, UK. Might look tatty, but is actually in superb condition having been rebuilt by Sentinel at Shrewsbury in 1961 and little used since. There may well be a few of these brand new at the bottom of the Atlantic...

Son and I rebuilding 14-1/2’’ and need apron hand wheel, can't find an original but can get a cast iron wheel that looks close fairly cheap. Can someone tell us the size of original wheel, part book no help listed as NLA. Also is either 13’’ or 16’’ a match?

Apron has a hub sticking out 2-1/4’’, shaft is 5/8’’diameter and sticks out 1-1/4’’ with through hole for pin. Hope this helps

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you.

If you were willing to ship them, I'd buy them. Unfortunately, Oklahoma City doesn't seem to be local to Niagara Falls.?

Subject: [SouthBendLathe] Help with hand wheel

Son and I rebuilding 14-1/2’’ and need apron hand wheel, can't find an original but can get a cast iron wheel that looks close fairly cheap. Can someone tell us the size of original wheel, part book no help listed as NLA. Also is either 13’’ or 16’’ a match?

Apron has a hub sticking out 2-1/4’’, shaft is 5/8’’diameter and sticks out 1-1/4’’ with through hole for pin. Hope this helps

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you.

Dennis

Re: Looking for HSS inserts

The insert geometry/chip breaker and maybe the grade could be what's giving you the issues with your current insert.? A more positive chip breaker and a low speed grade may solve this issue for?you.? I would suggest a Kennametal WNMG332MS, KC5025 grade.? This is a medium sharp chip breaker with a low speed higher cobalt grade for toughness and it will work in?both materials..

Another thing you could try if you're running 12L14 is cranking up the speed and feeds, probably a lot higher than you're currently running.? With carbide inserts, there is a speed, feed and depth of cut range that carbide likes to run a depending?upon the material.? Just like a car engine - if you run it too slow your lugging it and too fast and it over revs.

I don't know what insert you have but for steel you may want to start the RPM at 500+ surface feet per minute, and a feed of .005" per rev minimum and .025" depth of cut per side (more if possible).? The insert geometry you have doesn't look like it's for aluminum.

Good luck!? The other Jim B.

Re: Looking for HSS inserts

Nice chart. Very self explanatory. Thanks much, I'll hang onto that for future reference. And I'll give them a call on Monday. Greg

Hey Eddie, yeah I know about the tip radius but that was what came on it. I didn’t do my usual research on this tool before buying & just assumed I would be able to find a HSS insert with a smaller nose radius. Dumb move. Oh, and I know about the chipped tip in the back. Thanks

You are unlikely to get a good finish from a small lathe with that tip, as it has a rather large nose radius. If you look at any carbide manufacturer's website, you will find the carbide tip codes broken down to what they mean, which will help you select something more suitable, then search ebay etc. for it. Also, you already have at least one blunt corner (the one where the gold coloured coating (which should be Titanium Nitride aka TiN) is removed.

I am looking for a source for HSS inserts to fit a particular lathe tool I bought not long ago from Shars. The tool (MWLN Tri-lock tool) came with a carbide insert (WNMG 332) but no matter what I do I can't get a decent cut with it. Am hoping that switching to a HSS insert will improve the situation considering the fact that carbide is really intended for speeds a little higher than my South Bend 10 heavy is made for. Shars told me that they do not carry any HSS inserts that will fit that tool. And I have been looking at other sources to no avail. Although I don't really know a good way to search. You can't search for "WNMG 332" cause you then come up with the above listed carbide insert. Thought I'd bounce it off of you nice folks and maybe somebody has a source I don't know about.

Re: Looking for HSS inserts

Thanks much for the tip and link Bill. I’ll check them out and play with the angle more. Shars actually said something to that effect. Said that some folks have had luck with that tool by lowering it below the centerline.? Greg

Not a lot of machining experience here, but did play with carbide tooling on the machines at school & at home. The working lathe at home is an Atlas. Not a terrible machine, but not as sturdy as a Heavy 10, either. Hope someday to have a functional Heavy 10L here. Still needs a bunch of work.?
