Help with hand wheel

Son and I rebuilding 14-1/2¡¯¡¯ and need apron hand wheel, can't find an original but can get a cast iron wheel that looks close fairly cheap. Can someone tell us the size of original wheel, part book no help listed as NLA. Also is either 13¡¯¡¯ or 16¡¯¡¯ a match?

Apron has a hub sticking out 2-1/4¡¯¡¯, shaft is 5/8¡¯¡¯diameter and sticks out 1-1/4¡¯¡¯ with through hole for pin. Hope this helps?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you.

Dennis

Re: Looking for HSS inserts

Hey Eddie, yeah I know about the tip radius but that was what came on it. I didn¡¯t do my usual research on this tool before buying & just assumed I would be able to find a HSS insert with a smaller nose radius. Dumb move. Oh, and I know about the chipped tip in the back. Thanks

You are unlikely to get a good finish from a small lathe with that tip, as it has a rather large nose radius. If you look at any carbide manufacturer's website, you will find the carbide tip codes broken down to what they mean, which will help you select something more suitable, then search ebay etc. for it. Also, you already have at least one blunt corner (the one where the gold coloured coating (which should be Titanium Nitride aka TiN) is removed.

Subject: [SouthBendLathe] Looking for HSS inserts

Hello all. I am looking for a source for HSS inserts to fit a particular lathe tool I bought not long ago from Shars. The tool (MWLN Tri-lock tool) came with a carbide insert (WNMG 332) but no matter what I do I can't get a decent cut with it. Am hoping that switching to a HSS insert will improve the situation considering the fact that carbide is really intended for speeds a little higher than my South Bend 10 heavy is made for. Shars told me that they do not carry any HSS inserts that will fit that tool. And I have been looking at other sources to no avail. Although I don't really know a good way to search. You can't search for "WNMG 332" cause you then come up with the above listed carbide insert. Thought I'd bounce it off of you nice folks and maybe somebody has a source I don't know about.

Re: Looking for HSS inserts

Hey George, thanks for the response. I have tried 12L14, 1018, something I can¡¯t identify, as well as 6061 Aluminum. Have tried every speed & feed combo I can think of, no joy. I have a number of other tool holders & have no problems with them. Carbide insert¡¯s of course don¡¯t perform as well as the HSS inserts do in the other tool holders, and I had hoped to find HSS inserts for this holder. Greg

OT, buying bulk fasteners

Where do you guys find the best deals on bulk fasteners?? Sometimes we find a good price at Home Repot or Lowes for 25# containers of deck screws, but we've been using a lot of the Timberlok and similar type structural screws for wood projects.? Talking everything from 2-16" long.? Also Tek screws,? washer type with rubber gaskets.?

These gears are for the 7X lathes. They won't "DIRECT FIT" a SBL.

It appears that if you have a warranty claim within the first year (UK statutory period, other countries may vary) you are likely to get a complete replacement unit.

Fortunately, the chap I sold the inverter to (via the same internet web sales site as mentioned below - other sites might be available, although I doubt whether the Vinted client base would be interested) was a practical sort of chap well able to make his own cover and has reported being delighted.

SO, if you lose or damage one of their gears outside the warranty period, expect to have to buy a full set again. I think.

Incidentally, the full semi intelligible manual for the Vevor inverter was available on the web. I was amazed how cheap a new Inverter would be.

I may also have spotted the same inverter with a different badge on it. It was a while back. Chinese, obviously.

I don't need these for my lathe but they are inexpensive and might work for others with older lathes or even for any gearing projects. Seems like this Vevor brand is really ramping up to try and be a one-stop for machining stuff.

Re: Selling my Heavy 10x36

Oren, did you send me some photos yesterday? I have this vague memory of dumping something from my spam folder that had a link to photos in it, when I was in a rush yesterday. I would like to come out and see your lathe, but I've been running a fever the past couple of days, don't think I want to be sharing it just yet.?

Also, have you had a chance to think about what you want for it. Do you know when it was made? And how long is the bed. I know you said 36", but is that the whole machine or the working length of the bed? Single or double tumbler gear box, or change gears? One I have is 1941 vintage, with a 4-1/2' bed. Gives it about 30" working length IIRC. Not that I've ever seen it work, but I got it cheap when Bill H. realized he wasn't going to live long enough to get it back running again.?

Locally there was a powdered soap made called Mione Hand Soap.? It was always in the powder soap dispensers over the big round wash sinks found in many machine shops.? I never used it dry but it might have worked.? As I recall it contained pulverized limestone for the grit and also lanolin.? Kind of like Boraxo.? Can't find a list of ingredients.
