Re: A very different T-Nut.

Very cool. I don't think anyone I know ever thought of indexing like that on the lathe. Thanks for the idea.

Re: FS: Baldor Motor and TECO drive combo for your lathe or other machines

I'm not within pickup distance, but I am interested in doing a VFD conversion on both my lathe and mill.
I have been totally unable to find any real numbers on the useful frequency or RPM range a setup like this would give me.
Can you point me to any online resources that would help me specify a motor/drive combo for my lathe?
How much and how quickly does torque fall off when you veer off the 60hz the motor is designed for?
What exactly does 'Inverter Duty' mean? does this give a wider useful speed range?
How about stator cooling? I've seen some installations where the builder grafted a computer muffin fan to the end bell of the motor for better cooling at low speed. I have not seen this specified in any available motor, even those that claim 'inverter rated'.

I know, I ask too many questions... I've heard that many times before.

If you're using a Microsoft OS, you have to download the .heic stuff from the Microsoft store for $0.99. I don't need to see them that bad. A new Baldor 1/2hp motor runs around $700, TECO VFD 1/2hp, new, is about $275. In good shape, lightly used, $300 sounds fair to me. Too bad I can't afford it! Though I'm happy I don't live in New Jersey. Finding good motors out here doesn't seem to be all that easy, but there are other compensations.??

That's why I put a Bergerda 1.8kW AC Servo on my milling machine.? Cost of 2HP (1.5kW) and good VFD was way more and I shared the FedEx shipping over two motors; the other a 750W AC servo for the knee.? And overall height was lowered by 3.75" and RPM and positioning was now possible.

I've got a Grainger's local to me, so can mostly live without McMaster-Carr. ;) My 3rd stepfather was from Camden. Only thing he missed from there were TastyKakes. His brother would visit once or twice a year, and would bring some for Tom. I've seen them here in OKC, fairly recently, but I'm a dedicated Hostess fan. ;) And do NOT need anymore fat in my diet. :)

If I lived out that way, and had the $$, I'd be coming to see you!?

For someone that needs a good variable speed, reversable setup, I am offering a Baldor IDXM7006 inverter duty ? HP motor and TECO Westinghouse L510-101-H1-U Variable Frequency Drive for sale.? See attached pictures.

?

The motor is ?230/460V 3 phase, frame 56C, ¡°explosion proof¡±, ball bearing, 1735RPM at 60Hz, made in USA and is used but excellent shape.? There are minor scratches and scuffs on the paint, no dings or dents.? This was used to run a small pump in a lab.

?

The inverter is 110v input, ? HP, again in excellent condition ¨C I would say it almost looks new.? I do not have the manual, but it is available online from numerous sources on the web.

?

I purchased both of these for my employer, so I know their history of very light use.? When they no longer were needed, I was able to save them from the junk pile.? I was planning to use the combo in my shop but they have sat for a couple of years, and I need to reclaim some space.? I am offering the combo to this group first for a price of $300.? I am located in central NJ and would prefer to not have to ship, as the motor weighs 39 lbs, but will ship via UPS if you are willing to pay the actual cost which I think could be around $100 depending on distance.? I¡¯ll give first priority to local pickup, but if I get no takers, I will keep your info and sell to the first person who needs shipping.

Re: T-Nuts, the easy way

My 9C came from a used tool dealer. It had been owned by a business, not a private user and came with a hex bed turret on the bed and a double T slot cross slide. A regular tailstock was included but not mounted.

The compound rest was included and appeared totally unused. It had a large diameter dial graduated in 2/1000 inch. The dealer told me that graduation was standard at the time, around 1970 or thereabouts.

I am familiar with the much smaller diameter dials, but this lathe did not have them.

It had no cross slide to accept the compound rest so I got a new slide, screw and crank with dial from a nearby SB dealer. This one had the large dial but 1/1000 graduations.

I have only used the T slot cross slide to mount a Palmgren milling attachment as putting it on the compound rest was not rigid enough.

It also came with a hand lever collet closer and a set of 3C collets plus a hex and a square (IIRC) collet. I have acquired 3 and 4 jaw chucks since, that are usable for what I have needed them for.

The T slot cross slide was set up, badly, with a handlever for operation. I could never get the handlever pinion to mate properly with the small rack on the back of the cross slide. I have been able to use the new cross feed screw with the T slot cross slide as well as the compound cross slide when I needed to.

Wow , I had no idea that you could get large dials on a C , was
that a option ?

Re: OT, old vises ID

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Try bargaining a little. You never know. Judging by the pictures, it should be OK, but nothing compares to you putting your hands on it and checking it out.?

The old vises are much better than the new chinese garbage sold for 50 bucks. The gray cast iron used was 50,000+ psi and the new vises top out at around 30,000, making them lighter duty.

Of course, any vise is better than no vise, at least until you get a really good one.?

Wilton still makes vises in USA and sells them for 600 bucks, new, versus the chinesium ones that go for a couple of hundred.?

Gressel and Heuer from Germany use cast steel and their vises are lighter but just as strong as cast iron. Of course, they cost a boat load. A fully loaded vise can be over 1000 bucks, while the basic one runs about 500, depending where you buy it.?

Re: Milling on the lathe w/out a milling attachment (rate my setup)

Is this the sort of arbor you'd need? See photo attached. I'm thinking that enough spacers would let you mount a cutoff wheel on something like this...?

I WANT a surface grinder, but haven't found one I could afford in all the years I've been hunting machine tools. I have this arbor, and maybe a 2nd one like it, and a box of 4 or 5 pink wheels about 1/2" thick that my school threw away a while back. I pretty much cleaned out the dumpster. ;) I don't have any use for them, and they are part of the clutter I need to dispose of somehow. I could make you a very good deal on them if you're interested. And even if they won't help you with this particular problem, you'd be welcome to take them for small change or trade, if they'd be of use to you. The label under the arbor is from one of the wheels in the box. I apparently didn't get any photos of the grinding wheels themselves. Think I had a couple of loose wheels, too, and I'm probably keeping at least one. Guy Lautard has a bit on an improvised and hand-fed surface grinder in one of the Bedside Readers. It would be entirely sufficient to my needs. Speaking of Lautard, if you pdf's of any of his books that I don't have, you could trade them. I've been looking for a copy of "Hey, Tim, I Gotta Tell Ya..." for years. I'm looking for copies, not original books. Those are too valuable for this stuff. I've got pdf's of his Bedside Readers, the Radius generation book, and comprehensive index. I bought paper copies of the revise Machinist's Bedside Reader and Strike While the Iron is Hot. They are currently missing in action. Hoping they wound up in a box, and not left at one of our doctor's appointments.?

I can't easily get the mill back together easily because the reason I'm taking it apart is to repair the "front" gears -- the bearings are totally shot (to the point of almost seizing up) and this part is necessary to run the *back* gears. So far I don't think this is significantly harder than re-assembling the top half of the mill head, remounting it, tramming everything in, an then tearing it down again.

I need to cut a 0.190" wide slot, 0.300" deep in a ~1.75" wide chunk of steel, and it's a part for my milling machine, so I can't do it on the mill.

?

I don't think the tolerances?are particularly tight, but I'd like it to be as close as I can reasonably get it to the part I'm replacing.

?

Anyway, this is the setup I'm thinking of using -- setting the height relative to the spindle?with either adjustable parallels, gauge blocks, machinist screws, or some other form of shims / spacers.

?

I'm interested in hearing other suggestions -- I may just use some HSS toolbits as guides and do it with a file (likely pre-cutting some kerfs with a bandsaw).? My test cuts last night were pretty slow (0.015" DOC, top speed on the lathe, and feeding by hand at about 0.5" per minute), I don't think I can run the spindle fast enough for the 3/16" endmill I'd need to use, but maybe I can rough it out with files / saws and do the finish cuts this way.

?

Maybe I should be doing a series of plunge cuts, though? How much longitudinal force can I put on an endmill in a 4-jaw?

?

Here's a link to a video that may better show the setup:?

Thanks!

Re: A very different T-Nut.

Milling on the lathe w/out a milling attachment (rate my setup)
My first choice would be to run a 3/16" diameter 3 or 4-flute end mill but the runout will probably go over your .190" a little bit because of the chuck.? You could try to indicate that end mill shank but still...? If the .190" is your high tolerance - try a 5/32 or 4mm diameter end mill.? Also, the more the flutes, the stronger the end mill and then faster the feed.

If we take 80 SFM as the speed that this cast iron wants to be cut at - we get around 1,625 RPM. (80 x 3.82)/.188.? You'll probably have to feed this faster than you think and maybe your axial depth of cut will be modest but increasing the speed should help you considerably.? I'd give you the feed numbers but this is a manual so you'll have to feel it out.? Good luck!? The other Jim B.

Re: Milling on the lathe w/out a milling attachment (rate my setup)

A couple for the lathe, very common sized sf endmill, like 3/8" & 1/2", and you can tackle about anything small without having to tear down a setup on your mill. A t-slotted table and an angle plate, to make setups on the lathe easier... Working on doing that for all my lathes. Even the Unimats. ;) They can actually be set up as a milling machine, for tiny work, so I made a couple of milling tables. One is t-slotted, one has holes that will get tapped M6x1 as soon as I can get done messing with the house and cars.?

Everything here but the Atlas lathe, a large and small drill press, and the air compressor, are awaiting at least a bit of restoration work. There's an Atlas MF horizontal mill that needs the switch installed so I can see what else it needs, an HF mini-mill that was working when the guy sold it to me, but needed at least some adjustments, and there's a Lewis Shaper, and a Craftsman bandsaw that just need motors installed. Everything else needs from more to a lot more work. The Heavy 10L is most in need of work, as it spent five years in a very leaky barn. I got maybe a third of the way into getting the rust off the attachments and saddle, compound and such, and then got stopped cold for quite a while. I could have the two Unimats running in a week or so. Got all the parts, bearings and belts needed, but I'm trying to convert them to run off 24vdc motors. Everything is here, and just needs assembled. Don't even have deskspace enough to do them.?

This next couple of weeks I'm going to work on cars and the shop. Shop first, as much as possible, though my wife's wheelchair lift crapped out this afternoon as we were about to leave for her PT appointment. I had to pull it out of the van to get us there. Realized today that it's bee sitting nearly 20 years. I've found lube in several of the machine tools that was nearly or way past becoming varnish. May be able to ressurect the gear motors, or may have to replace them. Hope to find out tomorrow.?

I don't know what the original part is made of -- maybe an aluminum casting? I think more likely some pot metal, though. It is not magnetic, so it's not cast iron / steel, and it will just crumble in your fingers.

I thought this bit of scrap I'm using was cast iron, based on the chip formation, but it doesn't rust as quickly as cast iron, and I noticed a scribe mark that looks like A2 on one face, so maybe it's that.? In any case, that's what I'm using -- it's a shifting shoe to move the reversing pinion into place.? It'll be living it a bath of gear oil or grease (different discussion, that), and for the hours I'll put on this machine I'm sure it'll be just fine.

All of my endmill holders are for the mill, they're R8 taper -- I hadn't considered getting any for the lathe, but that's an idea I'll have to consider.? I'd rather not for just this job, but if I need to do more work like this that'd certainly be worth it.? Most of the time I have?a bridgeport clone (made by JET) at hand, so this isn't a problem :).
