SoB Ch.15: Beware a Stampeding Horde of Scotsmen... (Spoilers)
[See subject line]
B u t f i r s t s o m e s p o i l e r s p a c e Why are you up for being trampled by a bunch of irate Scots (and a few Welsh and Irish, for good measure)? Because you commit Clueless Yank Mistake no. 4621: Obsession with England, as follows: Elizabeth II, Queen of England [...] <Her Majesty may be the second of her reign-name ro reign over England and Wales, but she's also Elizabeth I of Scotland. More to the point, she was crowned as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, not "Queen of England," a title that hasn't existed by itself since at least 1707, and quite probably centuries earlier if we're getting picky (remember Wales and Ireland?). "I'm sure that's true, but if the Royal Family couldremain in England during World War II [...] Elizabeth laughed. "No, I don't think so. I have been onthe throne for nearly fifty years, sir. When my time comes, I will die on the throne, in England, not fleeing from the danger that now threatens my country." [...] < Lese majeste, you Colonial upstart! <j/k> But seriously, I can't imagine the Queen talking about England like that. She is very conscious that she is Queen of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland -- not to mention those parts of the Commonwealth which formally recognise her as Sovereign, like Australia. She would talk about Britain, not England, and would no more ignore the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish than you will be able to ignore the boots of the aforementioned stampeding horde when they read this chapter. Easiest way I know to insult a Scotsman is to say that Scotland is part of England; that's like saying that New York, Hawaii, Florida and Alaska are all part of California. You have been warned... ;-) "It will be as you say, Ma'am. But if I may suggest, whenthe tour begins, perhaps you and his Royal Highness should retire to Balmoral Castle," he said, closing his eyes in defeat. In his mind, he was already thinking about the possibilities of rescuing them from Balmoral. < You do realise that Balmoral is in Scotland, don't you? Apart from the geography errors, the chapter is a lot of fun, and things are obviously coming to a climax. Shame Snivellus didn't get his, but we can but hope that they'll do better next time. Also hope for lots of Slythergit-bashing, as we can't have too much of it. Phil, British Isles mongrel (English, Scottish, Welsh _and_ Irish ancestors) and proud of it! |

there is another story (It's My Life?) where the spell used was a trash banishment spell that sent the trash to a Icelandic volcano. Worked well in the story for 4 DE's.

Draco "My dad is Voldemort's right-hand man" Malfoy. Things happened over the summer and Draco doesn't want that anymore. Given Dumbledore's propensity towards "He's just misunderstood. Tom Riddle is a good boy. Really he is. He'll turn back to the light. You'll see." I figure Dumbledore is keeping the kids at Hogwarts in the hope that if he offers them enough lemon drops they'll come back to the light also. sean --- In snorkack@..., "aholeio" <sturnbull@m...> wrote:

Chapter 15
Do
You Prefer Spoiler Space? Or Can We Just Jump In With Comments? Excellent chapter as usual! I love your action scenes. I'm wondering if the attempt on Snape could actually be considered just a "warning". Given how physically tough wizards are (e.g., Neville falling quite a distance in SS and only getting a broken wrist) it's possible that Snape would have been expected to survive a fall like that with some painful injuries to get the point across - then he'd be jumping at shadows for a while until one of the shadows finally jumped at *him*. The DEs want him to *know* what's coming - killing him fast with the first attempt would not satisfy their sadistic tendencies. Poor Mrs. Norris! I hope she manages to find a new person. (Any chance of a Crookshanks/Mrs. Norris pairing? And kittens?) Really minor nitpick: "Her parents were laying on the floor covered in blood." They were "lying" on the floor, not "laying." "Laying" is the act of putting something down; once it's down, it remains "lying" there. I do love the way people are actually PAYING ATTENTION to Luna! In too many fics, she just wanders around saying insightful stuff and nobody pays attention because she's weird. Of course, she's just a little more focused than usual here. Does Harry know how to Vanish (as opposed to Banish) things yet? If so, he should set up a Vanishing location of, say, the bottom of the Marianas Trench, and Vanish things like Howlers, DE's wands and things there. Hell, Vanish the DE's themselves! Feed 'em to a kraken! (Vanishing is a potentially lethal spell; wonder why nobody uses it that way?) Keep up the good work! I'm waiting eagerly for next week's chapter! Dorothy |

Chapter 15
aholeio
Gripping, riveting, amusing - and that was just the disclaimer.
So I ask myself, SELF... Why would Dumbledore want to keep the DE Jrs in the school??? Potter has surely pointed them out. Snape knows who they are. This is surprising to me, especially in light that there have been two attempted murders. I never really considered who planted the spider before. At this point, I don't think it was Ron or Dumbledore, rather a student placing one of the Gryffindors under imperius. Yet there was no on screen scene with Dumbledore contemplating who did it. The second question that I'm asking myself is, as of chapter 15, who is on Dumbledore's side? The ministry seems to be distancing themselves from him, as do the interesting professors. The last question that I have is, using the analogy of the pretty girl going back to the cabin in the slasher movies(where everyone knows the killer is lurking), why would Harry and friends stay in school? They obviously have better things to do, and could just stage an argument or something to get expelled if they didn't want people to really know what they were up to. Two final comments – You two are the best. Finally thanks for busting Filch's arse. It's about time that that creepy perv met his maker. Hopefully each of the students will pour a bottle of the finest butterbeer on his grave, after they have first filtered it through their kidneys. Now, back to my own story. I have work for you two. Great chapter! Well, gory, and dark-ish. Will we find
out more about the killed DE's? I think that the issue of the snapped wands needs to be adressed. I don't think it is legal (duh!), and DD would try to do something about it. Oh course, he knows that Harry did it, but there is no proof... "I will let you kill Voldemort..." Okay, DD gets the creeps. I think that this is the majpr step on the pat leading to the destruction pf Britain. And I think that "Weasley" at the end was Percy. Care to vote, peeps? When Britain is conquered by V, what will the international reactions be? Will they try to get involved? What about the area Harry goes too? What will the peple there think of him, if they know he's there, that is. Well, that's it from me now... this chapter could use some more work, but it's above the regular ff standard, so... -Crs --- magyareagle <magyareagle@...> wrote: Bravo on a wonderful chapter, and the beautiful __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Lots
Of Spoilers For Chapter Fifteen Which Is Pretty Damm Cool. A very nice chapter indeed. This is one of those solid chapters that show the quality of writing that Bob and Alyx produce. We have some action, some drama, plot exposition, new and funky tricks (I'd love to know what it was that Harry did to the DE and how it works) and solid relationship progresion. To top it all off, we now have Percy the walking betrayer, why do I see hm as the sort who will be used to kill someone important like amelia Bones? After all, as a junior toady, he can get in to see her with no problem:) I like how Harry handled Nott. It was restrained, something he has had to learn. After all, he could accidently vaporise them or worse. Was it a spell he used? Or sheer force of will exerted over magic? Once again, you've shown how insightful Luna is. I do like where you have taken the character. Cheers Finbar |
