Re: Crucio

I don't know about "good", but here's a culturally "different"
reason ... I'm writing a story with some Native American elements in
it. As we know if we have not restricted our reading to PC texts,
there were some elements of Native cultures which were rather
unpleasant - so a cruciatus could be used not only to torture
captured warriors but to train the warriors of one's own tribe to
resist pain, so that if, for example, they were wounded while on a
scout mission they wouldn't give the mission away by crying out, or
something like that. Also so that if they were captured themselves,
they could endure torture to gain maximum honor. I can see wizard
samurai doing something similar - if you've trained under cruciatus,
you can pretty much ignore the pain of seppuku. Probably the Norse
or the Mongolians could have used it for similar reasons. Endurance
tests as part of manhood rites are big in a lot of cultures.

Things are different in a warrior/barbarian culture. It's only when
the culture is "civilized" that no purpose is seen for it.

The Cruciatus spell can be used for good. Some have suggested it
was
originally a medical spell to wake patients up from comas.

Also, wouldn't casting it repeatedly on someone build up a
resistance
to pain?
Sorry, I just don't buy it. There are nerve pressure points which
medical personal may use to see if a person is truly unconscious or
not, but cruciatus? Nope. That spell is too generalized and causes
too
much pain.

I look at it this way. There are some spells which were deliberately
designed to hurt people, and others which have been corrupted over
the
centuries into that catagory. Most of the spells aren't dark. Its
the
intent of the caster to make them so. Should someone actually come
up
with a good reason as to why cruciatus can be used for good I'm
willing to listen. But I don't believe there is a good reason for
it.
