SWCA's Austin, TX office offers a unique work environment and a diversified client-base, including generation / renewables, transportation, water infrastructure, oil and gas, and land development.

This posting is for a project specific position that will encompass excavation and laboratory work for a reservoir in northeast Texas. The reservoir is being constructed to supply water to the DFW metroplex and surrounding communities. Intensive archaeological survey has been completed resulting in the identification of numerous prehistoric and historic sites now undergoing Phase II excavation.

?

The open position is for a temporary field technician to assist on Phase II excavation of deeply buried prehistoric sites. The majority of work will consist of hand excavation in the floodplain of the North Sulphur River. There will be opportunities for field lab work (i.e., water screening and flotation) and additional excavation experience on historic and multicomponent sites. Numerous sites have already been excavated and evidence of human occupation across the area extends to the early Holocene.

This role requires a two- to three-month commitment to the project;?August through the end of October 2024. Travel and lodging will be covered by SWCA for the duration of the project, as well as per diem on days that are scheduled for work. Please see below (Additional Information) for more details on lodging and travel options.

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a?Cultural Resources Technician?for our Austin, TX office. This is a temporary, hourly, non- exempt position subject to variable hours and travel. Pay starts at $22.84 an hour and depends on experience.

?

What you will accomplish


Work as part of an excavation specific archaeological field team. This will include:

  • Conducting archaeological fieldwork under a SWCA crew lead at a testing (Phase II) level excavation.
  • Hand excavating 1x1m units on deeply buried prehistoric archaeological sites.
  • Completing project specific paperwork to document all excavation procedures and results.
  • Assisting in the uncovering, identification, and documentation of burn features.
  • Assisting crew leads with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units.
  • Participating in lab work on occasion which may include water screening, flotation sampling, and artifact processing.
  • Working with a large group of experienced archaeologists from multiple backgrounds and companies.
  • Opportunities may arise to assist in zooarchaeological, osteological, and geoarchaeological specific identification and documentation of archaeological sites and assemblages. ?


Experience and qualifications for success


Required Qualifications:

  • A high school or diploma or equivalent and at least 6 months of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field, preferred.
  • An accredited Field School Certification, preferred.
  • Field experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey and Phase II/III excavation.
  • Experience with feature excavation, deep excavation (1.5-2m), and/or work in floodplain deposits.
  • Experience in field laboratory methods, specifically water screen or flotation.
  • Knowledge or experience of Northeast Texas archaeology and/or Caddo archaeological sites and assemblages.
  • Knowledge of Trimble R10 units and digital mapping. ?
  • Interests or experience in zooarchaeology, osteology, or geoarchaeology.

Additional Information:

  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle record screening.?
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather (including extreme heat and humidity), and rugged terrain.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work variable fieldwork schedules. This project will consist of a 10 day on/4 day off schedule which may shift due to weather or project demands.
  • Per diem, housing, and company vehicles provided.?Mileage reimbursement is provided for work-related use of personal vehicles.
  • Hotel will be covered during the 4 days off in between sessions but per diem is only offered for workdays.
  • Travel including flight, mileage, and time to and from project will be covered. The project allows for up to 8 hours of travel time and mileage (or equivalent flight). Additional coverage will be provided by SWCA for a 2- to 3-month commitment.

Integrated Environmental Solutions, LLC (IES) is seeking to immediately hire multiple archeological field technicians to assist with projects within Arkansas, ?Oklahoma, and Texas.?IES is in the process of surveying approximately 4,000 acres for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District and will be starting survey for a major fiber optic line project in the coming weeks. We also have ongoing Phase III excavation at a prehistoric habitation site and cemetery. The project will begin at the end of July and likely last through August 2024. The Field Technician position is under the direction of Staff Archaeologists and Principal Investigators.

Duties may range from?assisting in activities associated with the excavation of test units and features, screening, backfilling excavated areas, and cleaning/packaging/labeling archaeological artifacts.

Qualifications:

One year of experience as a field technician and the completion of an archaeological field school are preferred;

Ability to work in a variety of field conditions,?and to navigate efficiently in remote areas;

Alpine is accepting applications for Field Archaeologists for upcoming survey work. By joining our team, you will have the opportunity to further develop your skillset while working on a variety of projects within our 12-state region. Projects are currently scheduled through the end of 2024. ?

Wages are based on experience, but range from $22–$24 per hour for crew members. Individuals may be trained as assistant crew chiefs on some projects and receive additional compensation. This is a full-time, temporary, hourly position with the potential for work into 2025.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will conduct cultural surveys in support of cultural resources management work under the supervision of our Project Archaeologist, with direction from the project’s Principal Investigator. This position will assist in the timely and comprehensive completion of survey work, including accurate data collection. This position is entirely field based and requires the ability to regularly perform physical work, including, but not limited to, the ability to walk up to 8 miles a day (sometimes in rugged terrain). The position may also require the ability to stoop, sit for long periods, carry heavy objects, and use hand tools for digging and scraping.

Archeologist - Friends of Jawbone & Friends of El Mirage - West Mojave Desert, CA - Part Time Hours - $23-27/hr.

Location: West Mojave Desert
30~ Hours/Week

Nonprofit organizations requires a part-time Archeologist (average 30 hours per week) to assist with off-highway vehicle restoration projects on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the West Mojave Desert.

Friends of Jawbone (FOJ) and Friends of El Mirage (FOEM) are non-profit organizations in support of off-highway vehicle recreation in the West Mojave Desert. Among our activities are restoration projects on public lands managed by the BLM. Each year we restore 20-30 miles of motorized routes that are designated closed, with current projects in the Jawbone, Rand Mountains, El Paso Mountains, El Mirage, and Stoddard Valley regions. Pay rate between $23 and $27 an hour based on experience and qualifications. There are no housing or relocation packages offered for this position.

Responsibilities Include:

- Self-navigating backcountry roads to specific proposed restoration worksites; vehicle provided
- Perform cultural clearance surveys
- Report and coordinate results to BLM cultural staff
- Ability to work independently but as a member of a team

Qualifications:

- A Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Archaeology, anthropology, history or related field
- Previous experience performing and documenting cultural field surveys, preferably for BLM offices in the Southwestern U.S.

Harris Environmental Group (HEG) is looking to hire six Archaeological Field Technicians for multiple cultural resources survey projects in New Mexico and Arizona

Crews will primarily be working 8-day sessions, Thursday to Thursday, at 10-hours per day (including rated paid travel time). The pay rate for field technicians is consistent with SCA wage rates for project counties, including, but not limited to, Navajo, Apache and Gila counties, AZ. Techs will earn SCA wage rates plus Health and Wellness stipends for an average total of $22-25+/hour. Wage rates are determined by SCA wage determinations for the assigned project locations.

EDR is seeking experienced, team-oriented?Field Archaeologists?with demonstrated expertise to provide support to the EDR Cultural Resources practice area by assisting with archaeological fieldwork, laboratory analysis and/or office work.   • Conduct the analysis and curation of archeological and structural resources materials collected during fieldwork.
  • Coordinate with designers and project managers to lessen impacts to cultural resources during avoidance or minimization processes.
  • Coordinate with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies to secure any necessary concurrence/permits.
  • Provide on-site archeological project monitoring as needed.
  • Prepare project documents such as constraints statements, consultation letters, etc.
  • Assist with the production of Treatment Plans, Memorandums of Agreement, and Special Provisions.
  • Assess the eligibility of, and impacts on, archeological and structural resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

Minimum Requirements

The educational equivalent to a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field.? Working knowledge of Arkansas archeology and history, Section 106 law, NAGPRA, the Arkansas burial law, and other pertinent state and federal regulations regarding historic properties. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook desired. Experience using GPS preferred. Ability to adapt to new technology.? Effective oral and written communication skills, including experience in report writing.? Valid driver’s license. Physical ability to withstand archeological fieldwork in year-around weather conditions. Ability to traverse rugged terrain, including, but not limited to, steep hills, creeks and streams, swamps, brush and timber covered property, fences, etc. Statewide travel including overnight travel as necessary.

The following professional qualifications standards of the Secretary of the Interior as published in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), 36 CFR Part 61, must also be met:

At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration or management;

At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology; and

Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.

A professional in prehistoric archeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the prehistoric period.? A professional in historic archeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the historic period.

A Cultural Resources Project Director position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) to support Joint Region Marianas (JRM) on the Island of Guam. This position shall provide on-site technical support and assistance to the JRM Cultural Resources Manager (CRM) regarding activities related to the Programmatic Agreement between the Commander, Joint Region Marianas and the Guam State Historic Preservation Officer, Regarding Military Training and Testing on and within the Surrounding Waters of the Island of Guam, including research and assessment of potential impacts to cultural resources by military training and testing within the JRM Area of Responsibility (AOR). This is a full-time appointment primarily located on Guam, but the employee may be deployable to other areas within the JRM AOR, which includes nearby islands in the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Oversight and management of the Cultural Resources Program support on military lands within JRM AOR is the primary duty for this position. Guam has a substantial military presence consisting of three major military installations – Naval Base Guam, Andersen Air Force Base, and Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz. Each year major military training exercises are conducted within the JRM AOR where large quantities of military equipment and other materials are transported into Guam and the CNMI.

The Cultural Resources Project Director will provide leadership and oversight of up to five (5) full-time CEMML staff, including archaeologists, GIS specialists, and technicians. Working closely with the JRM Cooperative Agreement Technical Representative (CATR), the Cultural Resources Project Director will direct and coordinate execution of tasks in accordance with the terms of the Cooperative Agreement between CEMML and JRM Cultural Resources Group.

This position includes a combination of office and field activities, including field and subject matter expertise and methodologies, team supervision and training, reporting and documentation, communication and coordination with CEMML team and DoD sponsor, fieldwork supervision, consultation and coordination with SHPO, and project planning and project schedule and timelines.

This position will be responsible for oversight and management of CEMML staff, project budget and expenditures, coordinating with CEMML Principal Investigator and JRM CATR to develop project goals, objectives, and timelines, as well as generating and reviewing deliverables in compliance with the Cooperative Agreement Scope of Work and professional standards.

Responsibilities also include execution and oversight of all cultural resources support tasks, including but not limited to, documenting, monitoring, and protecting cultural resources; preparing information and analysis in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and other historic preservation and environmental laws; assessing state of cultural resource collections; participating in historical research efforts; and preparing and distributing material and assisting with consultation efforts. In planning and execution of all tasks, the Cultural Resources Project Director will work closely, and in collaboration with, the JRM CATR.
