Stone Point Services is seeking Archaeological Field Technicians to assist with upcoming Phase I archaeological investigations in Central and North Texas. This is a short-notice project starting next week (Tuesday January 14th). We will likely link several projects together, however, so there is potential for a couple weeks¡¯ worth of fieldwork at various locations across central and North Texas from the 14th onward.

The work will consist of intensive pedestrian survey with shovel testing under the field direction of a Stone Point Services Staff Archaeologist. A bachelor¡¯s degree in anthropology or a related field and prior experience in archaeological survey and shovel testing is required. Preference will be given to local candidates (or within a day¡¯s drive of Central Texas) with experience working in Texas. The pay rate is $20/hour. Hotel accommodation will consist of a single occupancy room in a safe and clean location and $50/day per diem. Mileage may be paid in specific instances during work-related personal vehicle use.

Required Skills:

Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in potentially adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, cold temperatures).

Candidates should also have good organizational skills, be safety conscious, show good communication skills, a strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new tasks as part of a survey crew.

Required Experience:

Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school.

Experience with GPS data collection preferred but not essential

Must have previous experience in CRM-based archaeological survey with shovel testing (Phase I)

Working knowledge of Texas history and prehistory is preferred

General understanding of historic/prehistoric material culture is preferred

Ability to navigate using compass and/or handheld Garmin GPS device

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in the field 95% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs. as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

The Staff Archaeologist will be responsible for the following:

  • Completing initial project review for requests from clients and project managers.
  • Performing pedestrian walkover survey, controlled surface survey, and hand excavation (shovel testing), oftentimes solo.

  • During pedestrian survey, determining types of appropriate survey coverage within the project area.

Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities

The Field Technician provides technical support, utilizing a basic understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, recording, mapping, and evaluating archaeological sites and supporting field surveys. Conducting field surveys (pedestrian and shovel test surveys) using topographic maps, aerial photographs, and ESRI ArcCollector GPS data collection software will be a regular part of this role.

This position requires the ability to work long hours, in difficult or remote environments, and in varying weather conditions and the ability to work with groups composed of diverse personalities. A positive attitude and ability to accept direction is a must, as well as the ability to work independently and to fully plan and execute personal assignments with minimal instruction.

Minimum Required Education/Experience

The position has potential for long-term, permanent employment for the driven, collaborative, and reliable archaeologist. UES is hiring an archaeological monitor for an upcoming construction project in downtown San Antonio, TX. The expected duration of monitoring is 14 field days. This project-specific monitoring role has the potential to grow into permanent positions with UES- the fastest growing environmental consulting firm in the U.S.!

As part of this monitor role, the successful applicant will conduct cultural resources monitoring tasks that include coordinating with construction crews, monitoring construction progress, maintaining detailed records, and documenting discoveries of cultural resources.   • PTO?
    • ESI provides compensated leave for vacation, personal and sick time as one comprehensive bucket identified as ¡°Paid Time Off¡± or PTO.??After one (1) year of service, pro re nata (PRN) employees qualify for PTO, accrued in one lump sum annually, based on the number of years of service and the number of hours worked in the prior calendar year.??
    • PTO may be taken in 4- or 8-hour increments. A maximum of 8 hours of PTO may be claimed per 24- hour period. PRN employees may claim PTO at any time of year, including during a work leave of absence.   • Healthcare (Medical, Dental, Vision)?
    • Starting in the second season of employment, all PRN staff working more than 624 hours in the prior year are eligible to participate in ESI¡¯s healthcare coverage. The percentage paid by ESI is determined by the number of hours worked in the prior calendar year. Employees may elect to enroll in just one or all of the offered coverages.?
    • Dependent coverage is available, employee pays 100% of dependent premiums.?
  • 401(k) Plan?
    • After 1 year of service and the next plan entry date (1 January and 1 July), all employees working more than 1,000 hours in the prior year are eligible to participate in ESI¡¯s 401(k) plan via salary deferral and receive a matching contribution.?

The Position

The incumbent will be Cultural/Natural Resources Specialist II, in the Cultural Resources Section (CRS), Environmental Program at the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), reporting to a front-line supervisor who reports to the Chief Cultural Resources Program Manager. The incumbent will be an Archaeologist and will be expected to complete the described professional and technical work. The position will also do Cultural Resources Project Management.
