Two field techs needed for Asylum Hill Project in Jackson, MS, $23-28/hour

 

The Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) seeks two (2) archaeological field technicians for the ongoing, multi-year excavation of the cemetery associated with the original Mississippi State Insane Asylum. This cemetery is located on the UMMC campus and contains the unmarked graves of over 4,000 individuals who will be moved to make room for vital expansion. The Asylum Hill Project will permanently memorialize the interred individuals during a later phase.

This is a 12 mo/year project expected to take at least 2 more years to complete. Selected candidates will be expected to move to Jackson, MS, as there is no per diem or housing provided for this project. The work schedule will be five-day, guaranteed 40-hour weeks (M-F, 8:00¨C4:30). Lab work will be provided when inclement weather prevents fieldwork.

NOTE: Though the project is on a university campus, THESE ARE CRM POSITIONS FOR PROFESSIONALS. Recent graduates who are interested in getting a few months of experience before starting grad school need not apply. Candidates interested in committing to the entire project will be given preference.

¡¤?????? Hourly pay for field techs will be $23¨C28 per hour, depending on experience.

Qualified candidates should have the following, at minimum:

¡¤?????? Bachelor¡¯s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field plus a minimum of one year paid, professional archaeological field experience, or at least 5 years of archaeological field experience in lieu of education

¡¤?????? Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in harsh weather conditions (Mississippi summers). This includes supporting your body weight on one hand while working with the other, kneeling or lying on your stomach for hours at a time, carrying heavy plywood and buckets of mud, and bailing out flooded graves.

The Archaeology Crew Lead?will perform a variety of activities to support all stages of project work. Leads will be responsible for crew safety and oversight, provide or assist in training, and communicate with agency and GBI staff as needed. Crew size will range between 3-8 people. Primary archaeology field duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead archaeology crew?to conduct and complete field surveys to document, assess and characterize the status of new cultural resources.
  • Monitor existing sites and complete site updates and condition assessments.
  • Prepare site records, GIS maps, and photographic records in addition to potentially adding data to the USFS heritage database.

Primary Archaeology Technician field duties will include:

Archaeological Monitors and field technicians for Ongoing Project Work in Eastern TN (Greeneville vicinity)

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring several archaeological monitors and field technicians to help conduct ongoing monitoring and survey efforts in eastern Tennessee (in the general vicinity of Greeneville). We have project-specific work opportunities that will develop into career-trajectory placement for the right person. The monitoring and phase I survey is a large and ongoing effort, with crews already in the field and project work expected to continue for several weeks at least.

Compensation

The hourly wage for this project will be between $28 and $35, commensurate with experience, attitude, and ability to commit to longer-term sessions. UES¡¯ preference is for a field tech local to Eastern TN but will consider applications from non-local techs. For non-local techs, UES will pay for drive time and accommodation near the project area, along with $68 per diem and a $10 weekly cell phone stipend. UES. Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with a construction crew to ensure safe and efficient monitoring practices.
  • Coordinate field crew progress and ensure daily data transfer.

  • Assist with technical reporting.
  • Support and maintain UES¡¯s high standards of ethics and quality.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to perform manual labor associated with shovel testing, screening, and pedestrian survey in a range of environmental conditions.
  • Attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Basic proficiency in digital field data collection.
  • Basic proficiency in navigation/orienting (using a compass and GPS).

Preferred Qualifications

  • A BA in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field is preferred but is not necessary if the applicant has one or more years of experience in CRM.
  • 6-12 months previous archaeological experience on Phase I surveys in Tennessee or adjacent states.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Administers the Arizona Antiquities Act (AAA) through the ABOR Policy Manual, Chapter VIII.
  • Representing the ASM Director to clients working to comply with the AAA.
  • Reviewing qualifications of potential Project Directors and Principal Investigators.
  • Reviewing permit applications for work to be conducted under the AAA.
  • Reviewing treatment plans and final reports for work conducted under the AAA.
  • Functions on an on-call basis for the reporting of archaeological/paleontological emergencies unless otherwise delegated.
  • Manages reports and inquiries from the public regarding archaeological/ paleontological finds on state lands.
  • Manage ASM's legally-mandated Archaeological Permits Office and the employees, students, and volunteers engaged in work related to the AAA.
  • Assists state, federal, and tribal agency archaeologists and law enforcement, cultural resource managers, land managers, the Office of the Arizona Attorney General, university attorneys, and county attorneys with the enforcement of laws protecting archaeological resources and other efforts, as required.
  • Works with other state and federal agencies to define ASM's role in interagency agreements such as Interagency Service Agreements (ISAs), Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs), and Programmatic Agreements (PAs).
  • Serves as land manager for the statewide Site Steward program for two UA properties containing archaeological sites in Tucson (Tumamoc Hill and University Indian Ruin).
  • Prepares financial information for ASM State Mandated Programs including invoices and reports. Works with the UA RII Business Center.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of archaeology and archaeological experience, preferably within the Southwest and with cultural resources management in the United States.
  • Working knowledge of the Arizona Antiquities Act (A.R.S. ¡ì 15-1631 and ¡ì ¡ì 41-841 through 41-844) or similar statutes from another state.
  • Ability to read USGS 7.5¡¯ maps and understanding of the UTM & PLSS location systems.

This is a 40+hour per week, temporary, hourly, field-based assignment. This assignment is anticipated to last six months, with the possibility of extension based on project needs.?

  • Accurately identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features.

  • Conduct archaeological monitoring, surveying, testing, and excavation in support of Phase I, II, and III studies in accordance with a research design to identify, record, and evaluate historic and prehistoric cultural resources.?

Archaeological Field Technician 2 (1-3 years of experience):??

    • Perform skilled tasks, conduct hand excavations, complete plan and profile maps of excavated units, complete standard feature and level forms, and screen soils to recover artifacts.??
    • Perform flotation of soil samples, walk-over, and shovel testing.??
    • Catalog, package, and label archaeological artifacts.??

The purpose of this role is to develop, direct, and complete projects involving historical archaeology and/or historic-age built environment resources (e.g., canals, roads, etc.).   • Perform archival research and/or conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories.?
  • Develop, direct, and participate in Class III survey involving historic resources and/or NRHP assessment and/or documentation of historic resources.?
  • Perform construction monitoring.?
  • Work collaboratively with the company¡¯s Architectural History Group to prepare historic preservation documents, including architectural inventories; historic building assessments and structure reports; National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) documentation (e.g., registration forms and Multiple Property Documentation Forms, and determinations of eligibility); Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)/Historic American Building Survey (HABS)/Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) documentation; cultural landscape documentation; historic context studies; and treatment documents.
  • Prepare, review, and/or edit technical reports documenting and synthesizing the results of research as well as field and lab work.?

Pay ranges for technician jobs are based on federal GSA rates, dependent on work location (county), and include a $4.93/hr Health & Welfare EO 13706 stipend as well as 11 paid holidays.

Rates start around $24.50/hr for technicians and is commensurate with experience. Per Diem and lodging is provided per the GSA rates for these projects. It is not necessary to be local to Athens or Asheville, but residence in the southeast is preferred. Drive time to and from the project area is paid, as well as mileage (mobilization and demobilization, plus 1 paid trip per month on longer projects).

Gray & Pape, a national cultural heritage firm, is seeking to increase our qualified pool of Archaeological Technicians for upcoming project work in the Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast regions. Individuals interested in working for Gray & Pape will only be selected from this pool.

?

The Archaeology Seasonal Field Technician performs archaeological fieldwork, lab work, or GIS work under the direction and supervision of a Gray & Pape Project Manager/Principal Investigator. Applicants approved for the pool must have (at a minimum):

?

  • B.A./B.S. in Archaeology, Anthropology, Tribal Historic Preservation, or related field with prior coursework in, or demonstrated knowledge of archaeology, prehistory, and history.
  • Archaeological field school experience.
  • Ability to take detailed notes.
  • Demonstrated work reliability.

?

Required skills include the ability to effectively conduct research activities, conduct fieldwork using appropriate field techniques, develop and maintain positive relationships, balance work schedules and demands, provide and receive feedback, seek to resolve conflict through communication and collaboration, and use effective verbal and written communication to listen and communicate effectively.

?

Applicants must be proficient in the use of computer programs and database systems and have familiarity with the operations and use of cameras, GPS, and GIS equipment and software. Candidates should assume that most of their working hours will be spent in the field.

?

Preference will be given to those with CRM experience. Familiarity with Phase I, II, and/or III work required. Pay is dependent on region and experience, the range is $18-$25/hr based on skills, experience, and location.

We will be accepting applicants to the qualified pool until May 30, 2025. Positions are seasonal, and work is on-call, as needed. Acceptance into the qualified field technician pool is not a guarantee of a job offer or a guarantee of hours.
