Two field techs needed for Asylum Hill Project in Jackson, MS, $23-28/hour
The Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) seeks two (2) archaeological field technicians for the ongoing, multi-year excavation of the cemetery associated with the original Mississippi State Insane Asylum. This cemetery is located on the UMMC campus and contains the unmarked graves of over 4,000 individuals who will be moved to make room for vital expansion. The Asylum Hill Project will permanently memorialize the interred individuals during a later phase. This is a 12 mo/year project expected to take at least 2 more years to complete. Selected candidates will be expected to move to Jackson, MS, as there is no per diem or housing provided for this project. The work schedule will be five-day, guaranteed 40-hour weeks (M-F, 8:00¨C4:30). Lab work will be provided when inclement weather prevents fieldwork. NOTE: Though the project is on a university campus, THESE ARE CRM POSITIONS FOR PROFESSIONALS. Recent graduates who are interested in getting a few months of experience before starting grad school need not apply. Candidates interested in committing to the entire project will be given preference. ¡¤?????? Hourly pay for field techs will be $23¨C28 per hour, depending on experience. ¡¤?????? Benefits provided include no-cost-to-employee health and life insurance, paid holidays, earned paid time off, and optional retirement withholdings with match. ¡¤?????? The hiring process takes some time, but we are hoping to add these new crew members by June 16 at the latest. ? Qualified candidates should have the following, at minimum: ¡¤?????? Bachelor¡¯s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field plus a minimum of one year paid, professional archaeological field experience, or at least 5 years of archaeological field experience in lieu of education ¡¤?????? Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in harsh weather conditions (Mississippi summers). This includes supporting your body weight on one hand while working with the other, kneeling or lying on your stomach for hours at a time, carrying heavy plywood and buckets of mud, and bailing out flooded graves. ¡¤?????? Ability to maintain the highest ethical standards and cultural sensitivity concerning human remains ¡¤?????? Ability to work as a cohesive team for a multi-year project ? Preferred qualifications include: ¡¤?????? Master¡¯s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and 5 years of field experience or 7+ years archaeological field experience (without degree) ¡¤?????? Previous historic-period burial excavation experience ¡¤?????? Knowledge of human osteology This position requires that candidates: ¡¤?????? Stoop, bend, kneel, walk over uneven terrain, and lift and carry weight of up to 75 lbs. ¡¤?????? Perform tasks requiring gross manipulation (use of hand tools) and fine manipulation (use of touch-screen devices) ¡¤?????? Adhere to project health and safety plans ¡¤?????? Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, as well as a good attitude and strong work ethic ¡¤?????? There will be a zoom orientation call on Tuesday, 5/6, and then techs will be working an 8-day session, Thursday to Thursday, at 10-hours per day (including rated paid travel time). The pay rate for this project will be $22/hour plus daily per diem. Project
