Volunteer historical work in Wisconsin
R. Joe Brandon
The Fort McCoy Archaeology Laboratory in Monroe County, Wisconsin, is
seeking qualified volunteers to assist in the excavation of a 19th century milling complex within the administrative area of Fort McCoy, a U. S. Army Reserve Post in West-Central Wisconsin. The site includes landforms related to the dam and millpond, a possible location for the mill itself, and may also include remnants of a 19th century village associated with the site. The mill existed from 1856 to 1876 and the project hopes to shed light on the Euro-American settlement of Western Wisconsin and its relation to wider trends in 19th century America. The project will run from April through September of 2000, and include excavation, mapping, and public interaction. A crew of ten to fifteen people is desired to perform. No prior experience in archaeology is required. This is an excellant opportunity to learn about historical and industrial archaeology. The positions are unpaid and room and board cannot be supplied, although cheap camping is availble very close to the site. For more information, please contact project archaeologist Andrew Sewell at: andrew.sewell@... <mailto:andrew.sewell@...> |

Even in this holiday season the job openings are still coming in - If you hear about a position you can just send it directly to shovelbums@... . Jennifer Hutchey just sent us all these PI and field tech openings in Pennsylvania. I also want to announce her new - well that is not quite right, the site has been around in many incarnations since '96, but a new URL is more accurate - web site for CRM postions and other related items by Jennifer at: Jennifer's site is still being developed but like the other URL's in the sig file this is a good one for any professional field tech to bookmark and pass on. While I am up here on the back of my Conestoga hocking snake oils I would also like to remind you of several other good resources. A - Kris Hirst maintains the site which includes a wealth of information about CRM and archaeology issues from all corners of the world (hmmm it is actually a sphere so that is a bit non-sensical...ooops sorry I digress). Kris also scours the web and puts out a weekly e-mail newsletter called "random samples". I highly recommend random samples as a great tool to keep abreast of what is going in the field we love outside of our own little world, even better this newsletter is well suited to our MTV attention spans - click, read, go on. You can think of "random samples" as the meso-scale view of archaeology in the last week. Regardless, do yourself a favor. Join at: B - Ken Stuarts very popular CRM jobs and field school web site is at C - Last, but far from least, is the comprehensive web site for the American Cultural Resources Association Jobs, laws, links - more fun then a shiny new 45-5. Whether you are an undergrad thinking you might want to try CRM out or you are an old field hand from the All American Pipeline days visit this site, and more importantly join the ACRA-L mailing list at to keep abreast of current issues relating to cultural resources (no ACRA membership is required to subscribe - also - I highly recommend digest mode - some users can be very chatty and opinionated ;-). The archives are also on the web site and are sorted by thread, very convenient. If you are serious about CRM you have to be aware of the laws that effect us and this is the list to be on IMHO. Also, as a student you can become a non-voting associate member of ACRA for only $25 (oops which reminds me I need to send in my check still). Do yourself a professional favor. Join the list, join the organization. There is more to CRM then just per-diem and cash pipelines (ohh but when they flow they are oh so nice!) Last but not least onto the job openings Best Regards y'all - have a safe holiday season. May Santa bring you a new trowel, metric folding ruler, and a Pentax K-1000. I hope your new year is filled with many easy to define features and clearly labeled bags in the lab. R. Joe PS - It looks like Shovelbums fell short of my hoped for 1,000 by 2,000 but we currently are at 750 subscribers since the list began in April. Remember this list only grows by word of mouth so when you have a chance, send out the attached sig file (with handy cut marks provided for your cutting and pasting ease) to your friends, colleagues, bosses, and professors. You can always join shovelbums in digest mode, or read on the web only (which still allows you to post positions) Let them know you heard about these on Shovelbums. SHPO position
Robert J. Brandon
From ACRA-L
---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 10:34:20 -0600 From: david a jr phillips <dap@...> To: Multiple recipients of list <acra-l@...> Subject: NM SHPO Job Announcement I am forwarding this job posting to ACRA-L despite hesitations. The New Mexico SHPO serves at the whim of the governor, we have a governor known for his whims, and the current Cultural Affairs Officer -- who supervises the SHPO -- has proven that he'll cut and run in a crisis. Despite all that, New Mexico needs a hard-working and effective individual in the job. I hope that if this announcement is posted widely, it'll help attract a pool of highly qualified candidates. Besides, the winning candidate gets to move to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Think blue skies, mountains, low humidity, and no mosquitos. --Dave Phillips, Albuquerque, NM. ________________ Director, Historic Preservation Division. The Director is the chief administrative officer of the Historic Preservation Division and the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO). The Historic Preservation Division is one of nine divisions of the State of New Mexicos Office of Cultural Affairs. The Director is advised by the Governor-appointed, seven-member Cultural Property Review Committee and reports to the Cultural Affairs Officer within the Executive Branch of the state government. The Director is responsible for the management of all operations and programs within the Division and oversees four program managers and a staff of historic architects, archaeologists, historians, planners, and support personnel. The Director should be knowledgeable in one or more aspects of historic preservation and heritage resources management and be conversant in modern information technology and how it can be used to preserve and protect cultural properties. Strong management, communication, and supervisory skills are needed as well as an ability to delegate responsibility to appropriate staff members. The Director must take a pragmatic approach to preservation, one that strikes a balance between preservation needs and development concerns, which are paramount in this rapidly growing state. Consequently, the Director must be an effective advocate of preservation who is able to maintain a well-balanced and positive relationship among business and community leaders, a culturally diverse population living in settings ranging from large metropolitan areas to traditional communities, sovereign Tribal entities, and State and Federal agencies that manage almost half of the states land area. The Director must be effective in maintaining support among legislators for Division programs and should have considerable experience in overseeing budget development, grant management, and personnel management. Division programs include: - Identification and management of historic and prehistoric sites and records - Nomination of properties to the National Register of Historic Places and State Register of Cultural Properties - Administration of financial incentives and grants for preservation - Technical assistance to federal and state agencies, local governments and the public - Administration of state and federal preservation and heritage resource laws - Education programs for the general public and students The Director and SHPO position is established in federal and state law, the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470s) and the New Mexico Cultural Properties Act (18-6-8). The Director is hired by the state cultural affairs officer with the consent of the governor to work with agencies, communities and private citizens to preserve the historic, prehistoric, and cultural heritage of the state of New Mexico. (for more information on the Office of Cultural Affairs, Historic Preservation Division visit our website! .) Applicants for this position should have 1) a graduate degree in American history, anthropology, architecture or historic preservation; or 2) at least five years of professional experience in American history, anthropology, architecture or historic preservation or any combination of these; or 3) have made a substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American history, anthropology, architecture or historic preservation or any combination of these. Applicants should send a letter, resume, and the names of three references to Judy Martinez, Office of Cultural Affairs, 228 East Palace Avenue, Santa Fe, NM 87501. Application deadline is March 1, 2000. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscription to the Internet mailing list, ACRA-L is not membership in the American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA).
