GENERAL INFORMATION:?The Archaeological Conservancy (Conservancy) is the only national organization that acquires, preserves, and manages archaeological sites in the United States. Founded in 1980, the Conservancy has preserved over 585 sites across the nation, ranging in age from the earliest habitation sites in North America to a 19th-Century frontier army post.

At the core of the Conservancy’s work lies the belief that preserving archaeological sites is essential for understanding the full scope of human history and the cultures that have shaped the world. The dedicated team of archaeologists, conservators, and heritage enthusiasts working with the Conservancy collaborates with local and tribal communities, landowners, and government agencies to ensure the longevity and accessibility of these vital sites.

The Conservancy is seeking a Midwest Regional Director based in one of its midwestern states and centrally located to a larger airport. See?.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

  1. Acquire, preserve, and manage archaeological sites in the Midwest (ND, MN, IA, MO, WI, IL, MI, IN, KY, OH).

  2. Generate support funds for this program.

  3. Build public support for archaeological preservation.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Complete all phases of land acquisition projects.

  2. Evaluate proposed projects suggested by experts.

  3. Conduct extended negotiations with landowners to acquire property through gift or?purchase.

  4. Work with the central office on tax, legal, and financial matters relating to acquisitions.

  5. Generate funding for specific acquisition projects.

  1. Work with interested persons and groups, including governments, to build support for archaeological site preservation.

  2. Supervise management and stewardship of existing preserves.

  3. Supervise support staff and volunteers.

  4. Conduct archaeological tours.

  5. Establish Midwest office and work with central office to hire an assistant field?representative.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Demonstrated preservation/conservation ethic and/or public interest ethic. Very high motivation and passion for the mission.

  2. Bachelor’s degree required. Acceptable generalist education with a superior academic record and some archaeological education is desirable.

  3. At least one year of experience in real estate, law, business, or entrepreneurship.

  4. Excellent speaking and writing skills.

  5. Ability to work with a wide variety of people, from farmers to corporate executives.

  6. Ability to work independently and decisively and to successfully complete a wide variety of?tasks.

  7. Ability to travel extensively throughout the Midwest region.

  8. Experience with archaeological site preservation and/or cultural resource management.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:?Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with a high degree of public interaction. Outdoor work may include walking on varying terrain and in varying weather conditions, making visual observations, and conducting stewardship or management activities such as monitoring, developing management plans, and overseeing fence installations. Work entails listening, verbally communicating, driving a personal motor vehicle, writing reports, attending meetings and conferences, and operating computers and standard office equipment.

Work involves managing multiple tasks and deadlines and requires a high degree of confidentiality, discretion, reasoning, judgment, and problem-solving skills. Work may be alone or as a member of a team.

Harris Environmental Group, Inc.is seeking an archaeological Project Manager in the Pacific Northwest area (Oregon, Washington, Idaho).

Office/administrative work for this role can be performed remotely in conjunction with some occasional field-work which would be done on-site in various Washington and/or Oregon locations.

This role will direct compliance projects for state, federal, and commercial clients. Archaeological experience in the Pacific Northwest United States is preferred. The position will assist with project development, direction, coordination and quality control for cultural resource management projects while expanding our archaeological and historical consulting team. Responsibilities will include project direction (including some fieldwork and possibly travel), training of staff, oversight of field directors, and producing quality reports, managing multiple projects, and budgets. Candidates must have an M. A. or Ph.D. in Anthropology or Archaeology and a minimum of five years of work experience and two to four years of experience managing projects. Job Duties and Responsibilities:

· Ensure that all fieldwork, analysis, and report production is conducted to professional standards and guidelines

· Aid with business development

· Remain current with agency protocols for conducting cultural resources work

· Manage budgets, prepare proposals, reports, and other technical documents, monitor field procedures, and author Research Designs, Treatment Plans, and other technical documents

· Oversee field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, and final report production

· Establish project procedures and budgetary restraints and assure that projects are concluded within budget and on time

· Conduct content edits of technical reports

· Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner

Qualifications:

· Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology or related field

· At least five years supervisory and fieldwork experience in contract archaeology and experience working on National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) compliance

· Ability to plan and conduct research based on contemporary archaeological method and theory

· Ability to be listed on our various federal and state cultural resource permits

-Experience in Washington and Oregon strongly preferred

· Experience with content edits of reports and a strong background in scheduling and budgeting

· Ability to train, coordinate, and oversee personnel

· Exceptional technical writing skills and a record of completing and editing technical reports on deadlines

· Experience with Section 106 compliance, NEPA and other relevant compliance processes

· Ability to work independently as well as oversee small or large projects

· Experience with excavation, artifact identification, and analysis of archaeological data

· Proficiency using ESRI GIS software and data management as applied to CRM projects

· Experience working with Native American groups and US federal agencies

About the opportunity


SWCA's Environmental Consultants is seeking archaeological technicians to join our?Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Tucson offices. Hiring will be for temporary positions to assist with upcoming cultural resources management work across Arizona.

This is a full-time, temporary, hourly, field-based assignment that is expected to last until?August 31st, 2024.?Extension of this timeline is dependent on fieldwork needs of any additional projects that arise.

What you will accomplish

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Completed an archaeology Field School focusing on North American archaeological methods and cultural resources management.
  • Previous experience conducting archaeological fieldwork for CRM firms in the southwest.

Working conditions & Physical requirements

This job is a fieldwork position that involves eight-day sessions in remote areas that may not have cell coverage.

  • Fieldwork may require extended hiking at elevations exceeding 7000 feet above sea level, potentially through steep, rough terrain in temperatures up to 100° F, while carrying a backpack and personal gear.
  • Must be prepared for vehicle-based camping.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with others.
  • Must have a valid local driver’s license and the ability to report to the Cornerstone Office in Flagstaff, AZ or other assigned meetup location.

Compensation

For all federal projects, the wage is $23.15 for Archaeological Technician I. Wages for non-Federal projects range from $20-$28/hr depending upon experience and role. Most projects are camping with per diem ranging from $90-100/day. During winter months, single occupancy lodging will be provided with a per diem range from $70-$75/day. No receipts required. No double occupancy, ever. Generally, travel time for all employees to the project area will be paid as if leaving from the Flagstaff office location. In the role of Senior Cultural Resources Project Manager, we'll count on you to:

  • Serve as Principal Investigator and/or Project Archaeologist for cultural resources investigations ensuring compliance with Antiquities Code of Texas, National Historic Preservation Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and other applicable federal, state, and municipal regulations
  • Manage Cultural Resources Projects from inception to completion, including:

  • Work under the direction of the South Central Cultural Resources Business Class Leader and Archaeology Program Lead as part of a regional team of archaeologists and collaborate with existing CRM team leaders responsible for managing archaeological surveys and site documentation, including feature and artifact identification and analyses; performing shovel test pits (STPs); site descriptions; photographs; and mapping
  • Serve as primary author on cultural resource technical reports
  • Must possess the technical knowledge to supervise archaeological field technicians and crew chiefs in field and office settings
  • Must be able to manage the production of professional quality reports for NRHP and NEPA compliance
  • Peer review draft reports and desktop background reviews produced by Project Archaeologists and other Principal Investigators before final content review
  • Perform other duties as needed

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to record cultural resources in the field without any physical assistance (this could include hiking short distances in scrub and native vegetation).
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in person, by telephone and email.
  • Must be able to effectively work in minimally supervised and/or unsupervised environments.

The position will be based out of our Farmington, Maine office, however projects will be conducted throughout the Northeast, primarily Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.? The position will require the management and direct supervision of archaeological projects in the field, laboratory and office.

Preferred Qualifications and Requirements

  • Perform a variety of field-related tasks including mapping, writing field notes, taking photographs, etc.

  • Maintain equipment and supplies
  • Assist in performing deep soil excavations in conjunction with geomorphological investigations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to walk and/or hike over very steep and rugged terrain, sometimes over great distances (average daily walking distance up to 2 miles), while carrying both personal and company equipment (e.g., shovels, screens). Must be able to lift heavy loads (e.g., soil-filled buckets) up to 50 lbs.? Job requires repeated bending, lifting, screening, kneeling, and digging.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • B.A. or B.S. in Anthropology (Archaeology) or closely related discipline (e.g., geology, geomorphology, history) preferred.? ?Applicants with archaeological field school and/or previous cultural resource management experience preferred.? Clear demonstration of experience in performing the tasks detailed above is preferred.
  • The successful candidate must be a licensed driver and willing to travel.
  • Preference will also be given to individuals with health and safety certifications, as well as knowledge of soils, and digitally-based recordation platforms.
  • Compass and orienteering skills strongly desired.

About this Position

Pinyon is seeking a full-time, salaried archaeological Field Director with extensive field experience in Arizona (and other four-corner states). A successful candidate will be collaborative, organized, and professional. This candidate will be responsible for conducting and/or assisting in Class I, II and III cultural resources inventories and support permitting and compliance. This position reports to the Archaeological Resources Group Manager and will work closely with Pinyon Principal Investigators and Project Managers. The position will be responsible for ensuring that inventory methods are implemented, and findings documented in accordance with all applicable standards and guidelines.?

Responsibilities will include leading and supervising field staff; recording archeological sites (precontact and historic) identified during inventory; preparing National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility recommendations; site testing for NRHP evaluations; monitoring fieldwork quality and reviewing paperwork/notes; conducting background research and preparing desktop assessments; analyzing artifacts; construction monitoring; and writing technical reports. Candidates must be able to identify and record archaeological sites, artifacts, features, soil characteristics, and understand site identification, delineation, and documentation procedures. The project will be a massive phase I survey of high probability landforms to be undertaken over the course of 5 years. The project will include shovel testing approximately 50,000 acres. There will be breaks between field seasons for laboratory and conservation work. Phase II excavations will likely come out of this project.

HRA is seeking to increase our qualified pool of Archaeological Technicians for work in our Eugene, Portland, Missoula, and Spokane offices. Experience and qualifications for success


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is required.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
  • 1 year of experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Experience providing QA/QC review of field documents, site forms and reports preferred.
  • Experience leading crews of field technicians on a variety of project types and sizes, regions and agencies preferred.

?(GBI), in cooperation with the USFS, is recruiting?to complete Section 106?and 110?cultural resource surveys, site recording, and monitoring for various projects for multiple forests throughout?California,?Nevada, and Montana (to be posted soon).?

These projects all serve the Cultural Resources?Program’s greater mission of helping the USFS in their critical goal of improving forest resilience in the face of worsening climate conditions and increased wildfire threats?as they strive to maintain public access for recreation.?The work that you will do directly protects sensitive cultural sites, helping ensure the stories they tell are preserved for generations to come.

Standard Contract Timelines:
Start and end dates may vary according to local conditions and individual projects. Immediate onboarding available. Project work lasts through mid-November, or until the snow flies.?
All projects are weather dependent and there is always a chance the season will end earlier if weather prevents safe field operations.

Field Crew Chief

The seeks a full-time field archaeologist to serve as crew chief to support the Principal Investigators on a colonial period Massachusetts excavation from June to early November. Housing may be offered for a strong non-local candidate. We plan to hire for this position as soon as possible.

Duties:

  • Open and close archaeological site five to six days a week (some flexibility in workdays and hours possible).
  • Manage and train a small crew of students and volunteers.
  • Lead excavations when P.I.s are not on site.
  • Carefully document the excavation via field notes, photography, mapping, etc.
  • Other related archaeological and organizational tasks.

Qualifications:

  • MA+ or Enrollment in a PhD or MA program.
  • Minimum two field seasons field excavation experience (at least one of which was at a historical site).
  • Excavation leadership experience preferred.
  • Keen attention to detail and self-motivated approach to fieldwork.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to excavate for a full workday and lift 50lbs.

About the Bradstreet Project:

The Bradstreet Project, located in North Andover, MA and established in 2019, has re-discovered the two 17th?century homes of foundational American poet Anne Bradstreet and her husband Simon Bradstreet (later governor of Massachusetts). After using dendrochronology to positively identify the still-standing partial remnants of the Bradstreet’s 1667/1668 home, the project set its sights on locating the archaeological remains of their earlier home that was memorialized in Anne’s poem?. Succeeding in this mission in the fall of 2023, excavations will continue in 2024 to further document the site. Learn more about our research from our conversation with the .

POSTION SUMMARY

Multiple Project Archaeologist/Field Director positions are available at Schofield Barracks and Pohakuloa Training Area, and involve a combination of office and field activities. This position functions as part of a team to support the Army’s cultural resources management and compliance tasks.? The position provides endless opportunity for developing leadership roles, making professional contacts, and exposure to Federal Laws and regulation, and taking part in discussions relating to complex issues surrounding land management in Hawaii. Position is roughly 40% Fieldwork (inventory and documentation), 50% Cultural Resources Management, and 10% other duties as assigned. Relocation allowance is available.

The Archaeological Collections Manager position is duty-stationed at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) and functions as part of a team to support the Army’s cultural resources management and compliance tasks.? This position is intended to be primarily collections management for the PTA Program with cross-over archaeologist plan/report writing and field support. Position is roughly 60% Collections Management, 25% Archaeological support, 15% other duties as assigned.

Hawaiˊi is located 2,200 miles west of California and 4,000 miles east of Japan. Hawaiˊi offers endless opportunities for recreational and cultural activities, including camping, surfing, diving and snorkeling, hiking trails, museums, and parks.

Pōhakuloa Training Area (PTA) is located on the island of Hawaii in the Saddle region between Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and the Hualalai Volcanic Mountains. It extends up the lower slopes of Mauna Kea to approximately 6,800 feet in elevation and to about 9,000 feet on Mauna Loa. The training area is about midway between Hilo (pop. 50,000) on the east coast and Kawaihae Harbor to the west with approximately 50 minute commute times. PTA is the largest DoD installation in Hawaii. USAG-HI provides installation management service and support for three Army installations on Hawaii Island including PTA, Kilauea Military Camp, and Kawaihae Harbor.

Schofield Barracks is located on the Island of Oahu, nestled at the foot of the Waianae Mountain range and is approximately 18 miles north of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. The installation is located a few miles from the towns of Wahiawa (pop. 16,000) and Mililani (pop. 27,000) and approximately 45-minute drive to metro Honolulu (pop. 905,000). What You Will Contribute

  • An ability to conduct fieldwork––including survey, testing, and data recovery––for long hours in inclement weather, rough terrain, and/or high elevations
  • Proficiency at the identification, recordation, and evaluation of archaeological sites of prehistoric and historical archaeological sites
  • Demonstrated excellence in technical writing, and proven ability and experience in all areas of archaeological inquiry (research, survey, excavation, and analysis)
  • Willingness to travel for 8–10 days at a time for field sessions; per diem and lodging is provided
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency with software such as MS Word, Access, and Excel
