Job Description:

Our Project Directors (PD) are responsible for preparing and implementing all aspects of survey, testing, monitoring, data recovery plans, and coordinating all field and analytic tasks associated with fieldwork, analysis, and report preparation. This work will involve traveling and/or fieldwork. The PD is responsible for report writing and for having a solid understanding of the basics of cultural resource management.

For small- and medium-sized projects, the PD may also assume many of the tasks typically assigned to a Principal Investigator (PI), although you will work under the mentorships of the PI for that project. For larger projects, the PD will work in tandem with experienced project directors and/or the PI and the project manager to ensure that all tasks associated with project implementation are accomplished. THE PERSON

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an?Archaeological Monitor?(HR Title: Assistant Staff Compliance Monitor) to join our team in the Rocky Mountain Plains subregion (Bismarck, North Dakota; Denver and Fort Collins, Colorado; and Sheridan, Wyoming). This is a distributed position, welcoming applicants from outside these office locations.

As an Archaeological Monitor, you will be responsible for various project tasks, including working independently, coordinating with construction crews, monitoring construction progress, maintaining detailed records, and documenting cultural resources. You will also conduct inspections of construction areas, identify cultural materials, utilize tablets for data collection, adhere to state-specific protocols for site recording, and conduct evaluations for the National Register of Historic Places.?

For an assistant staff compliance monitor position, a key element of your job will be to independently supervise an archaeological survey crew in the field.

This is an hourly, regular-status, benefitted position for the duration of the monitoring project, expected to run approximately from June to mid-November 2024. In accordance with the construction schedule, work hours will vary between 10 to 12 hours per day, Monday through Saturday, with Sundays off. Lodging and per diem are covered seven days a week, and weather days are covered. Rental trucks will be provided for use on-site.

This multi-year project may offer opportunities for returning work annually, with efforts made to extend employment to other projects upon seasonal project completion. Compensation ranges from $24.15 to $30.98 per hour, commensurate with experience and role, with overtime pay at time-and-a-half. Additional benefits include paid sick time, paid travel time between the project location and project lodging, and single-occupancy lodging in SWCA-leased apartments. Per diem is $59 per day.

What you will accomplish

• Work collaboratively with a construction crew to ensure safe and efficient monitoring practices.
• Perform monitoring fieldwork and provide assistance to project managers with various field tasks.
• Coordinate the progress of the field crew and facilitate daily data transfer.
• Prepare accurate and detailed daily monitoring reports.
• Collect, organize, and conduct quality assurance and quality control for field data.
• Potentially assist with technical reporting as needed.

Experience and qualifications for success

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience with a variety of field methods, including survey, testing, and excavation.
• Possession of a current valid driver’s license and the capability to safely operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle on rugged backcountry roads.
• Ability to travel to various locations and conduct fieldwork for extended hours, sometimes in adverse weather conditions, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes. Must be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

The field school should preferably be university-based and completed for academic credit and must entail at least 4+ weeks of intensive, hands-on education in archaeological excavation techniques resulting in learned skills such as digging and screening, artifact and feature identification, soil recordation, mapping, and documentation, etc. Demonstrated equivalent volunteer or professional experience will also be considered in lieu of a formal field school. Preferred applicants will also have professional experience working in the field, conducting analysis of research data, and contributing to research reports.

Required skills include the ability to effectively conduct research activities, conduct fieldwork using appropriate field techniques, develop and maintain positive relationships, balance work schedules and demands, provide and receive feedback, seek to resolve conflict through communication and collaboration, and use effective verbal and written communication to listen and communicate effectively.

Incorporated in 2011, North Wind Resource Consulting’s core capabilities include environmental documentation and permitting; natural and cultural resource surveys; wildlife and botanical expertise; National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) technical services; historic and prehistoric surveys; environmental consultation such as Section 106 for cultural resources, Section 404 for wetlands, and Section 7 for endangered species); and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping capabilities. POSITION PURPOSE:

The Archaeologist Technician I is a position that will be providing in-field and support for projects located within North Winds northern service area, which includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Previous experience in Class III archaeological survey, artifact identification, in-field documentation, and site recording knowledge are preferred but not necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·????? Assisting a higher-level Crew Chief or Field Director with survey documentation

·????? Follow North Wind established field protocols

·????? Assist with (a) collecting data using GPS units (i.e., Trimble, Garmin, and/or IOS Field Collector), (b) taking photographs of project area, project activities, and artifacts (c) artifact/feature identification

·????? Collect artifact/feature descriptions

·????? Maintain both North Wind and project-specific safety awareness and practices at all times

·????? Regular communication with North Wind Project Manager, Field Director, and Line Supervisor

·????? Participation in North Wind training

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

·????? Bachelor Degree in Anthropology or related field (i.e., History)

·????? Possess experience in Great Basin or Plains archaeology

·????? Experience in and willingness to work in inclement conditions (i.e., hot, windy, sunny without shade, cold, rain, potential snow)

Skills and Abilities:

·????? Possess a strong work ethic with a developed and mature understanding of professionalism

·????? Ability to follow written and oral instruction

·????? Display excellent communication and interpersonal skills and attention to detail.

·????? Ability and willing to travel to various field locations, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, across rugged terrain

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

·????? This position requires long periods of walking, climbing, standing, stooping, kneeling, and bending for periods of up to 10-12 hours per day.

·????? Frequent carrying of a backpack with equipment of up to 30 lbs. across uneven and steep terrain.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work will be performed outdoors in harsh and rapidly changing environments to include all types of weather conditions to include extreme heat or cold environments, traverse uneven terrain. There may also be time spent in the office assisting with report preparation and background research, which requires static periods sitting and working on a computer.
