Working conditions & Physical requirements

This job is a fieldwork position that involves eight-day sessions in remote areas that may not have cell coverage.

  • Fieldwork may require extended hiking at elevations exceeding 7000 feet above sea level, potentially through steep, rough terrain in temperatures up to 100° F, while carrying a backpack and personal gear.
  • Must be prepared for vehicle-based camping.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with others.
  • Must have a valid local driver’s license and the ability to report to the Cornerstone Office in Flagstaff, AZ or other assigned meetup location.

Compensation

For all federal projects, the wage is $23.15 for Archaeological Technician I. Wages for non-Federal projects range from $20-$28/hr depending upon experience and role. Most projects are camping with per diem ranging from $90-100/day. During winter months, single occupancy lodging will be provided with a per diem range from $70-$75/day. No receipts required. No double occupancy, ever. Generally, travel time for all employees to the project area will be paid as if leaving from the Flagstaff office location. In the role of Senior Cultural Resources Project Manager, we'll count on you to:

  • Serve as Principal Investigator and/or Project Archaeologist for cultural resources investigations ensuring compliance with Antiquities Code of Texas, National Historic Preservation Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and other applicable federal, state, and municipal regulations
  • Manage Cultural Resources Projects from inception to completion, including:
    • Writing project proposals and developing project cost estimates
    • Maintaining project records and information using HDR’s project management software and toolbox
    • Working with multi-disciplinary teams in our power, water, industrial, transportation, and oil and gas sectors in the South Central region and nationally to help plan, staff, and execute major CRM efforts
  • Work under the direction of the South Central Cultural Resources Business Class Leader and Archaeology Program Lead as part of a regional team of archaeologists and collaborate with existing CRM team leaders responsible for managing archaeological surveys and site documentation, including feature and artifact identification and analyses; performing shovel test pits (STPs); site descriptions; photographs; and mapping
  • Serve as primary author on cultural resource technical reports
  • Must possess the technical knowledge to supervise archaeological field technicians and crew chiefs in field and office settings
  • Must be able to manage the production of professional quality reports for NRHP and NEPA compliance
  • Peer review draft reports and desktop background reviews produced by Project Archaeologists and other Principal Investigators before final content review
  • Perform other duties as needed

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to record cultural resources in the field without any physical assistance (this could include hiking short distances in scrub and native vegetation).
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in person, by telephone and email.
  • Must be able to effectively work in minimally supervised and/or unsupervised environments.
  • Work hours other than 8 to 5 which may include weekends and/or night shifts
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Be able to operate a vehicle day or night.
  • Approximately 25% travel required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical specialization in one or more of the following: geoarchaeology, remote sensing, lithic analysis, historic materials analysis, and/or cemetery investigations
  • Experience managing archeological teams comprised of project archaeologists and field crew chiefs
  • Network of regional / national technical experts required for Phase II testing, Phase III mitigation and analyses
  • National Historic Preservation Act - Section 106 coordination management

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 7 years related experience

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • B.A. or B.S. in Anthropology (Archaeology) or closely related discipline (e.g., geology, geomorphology, history) preferred.? ?Applicants with archaeological field school and/or previous cultural resource management experience preferred.? Clear demonstration of experience in performing the tasks detailed above is preferred.
  • The successful candidate must be a licensed driver and willing to travel.

About this Position

Pinyon is seeking a full-time, salaried archaeological Field Director with extensive field experience in Arizona (and other four-corner states). A successful candidate will be collaborative, organized, and professional. This candidate will be responsible for conducting and/or assisting in Class I, II and III cultural resources inventories and support permitting and compliance. Bluestone Research group is seeking qualified crew chiefs and ?project leaders. Applicants should be archaeologists with Master’s degrees or a comparable experience level for a potential upcoming project in costal North Carolina. The project will be a massive phase I survey of high probability landforms to be undertaken over the course of 5 years. The project will include shovel testing approximately 50,000 acres. There will be breaks between field seasons for laboratory and conservation work. Phase II excavations will likely come out of this project.

HRA is seeking to increase our qualified pool of Archaeological Technicians for work in our Eugene, Portland, Missoula, and Spokane offices. Successful candidates must either currently reside in or be planning to relocate to states in which we primarily operate (Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Idaho). The Archaeological Technician – Seasonal performs archaeological fieldwork, lab work, or related office work under the direction and supervision of an HRA staff archaeologist.

Preferred applicants approved for the pool must have (at minimum) a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and an archaeological field school. Extensive field experience will also be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree; enrolled students nearing graduation will also be considered. The field school should preferably be university-based and completed for academic credit and must entail at least 4+ weeks of intensive, hands-on education in archaeological excavation techniques resulting in learned skills such as digging and screening, artifact and feature identification, soil recordation, mapping, and documentation, etc. Demonstrated equivalent volunteer or professional experience will also be considered in lieu of a formal field school. Preferred applicants will also have professional experience working in the field, conducting analysis of research data, and contributing to research reports.

Required skills include the ability to effectively conduct research activities, conduct fieldwork using appropriate field techniques, develop and maintain positive relationships, balance work schedules and demands, provide and receive feedback, seek to resolve conflict through communication and collaboration, and use effective verbal and written communication to listen and communicate effectively.

RK&K is seeking Secretary of the Interior (SOI)-qualified candidates for multiple Professional Archaeological Field Manager positions to support on-going and upcoming archaeological projects in Virginia, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Experience and qualifications for success


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is required.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
  • 1 year of experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Experience providing QA/QC review of field documents, site forms and reports preferred.
  • Experience leading crews of field technicians on a variety of project types and sizes, regions and agencies preferred.

Field Crew Chief

The seeks a full-time field archaeologist to serve as crew chief to support the Principal Investigators on a colonial period Massachusetts excavation from June to early November. Housing may be offered for a strong non-local candidate. We plan to hire for this position as soon as possible.

Duties:

  • Open and close archaeological site five to six days a week (some flexibility in workdays and hours possible).
  • Manage and train a small crew of students and volunteers.
  • Lead excavations when P.I.s are not on site.
  • Carefully document the excavation via field notes, photography, mapping, etc.
  • Other related archaeological and organizational tasks.

Qualifications:

  • MA+ or Enrollment in a PhD or MA program.

About the Bradstreet Project:

The Bradstreet Project, located in North Andover, MA and established in 2019, has re-discovered the two 17th?century homes of foundational American poet Anne Bradstreet and her husband Simon Bradstreet (later governor of Massachusetts). After using dendrochronology to positively identify the still-standing partial remnants of the Bradstreet’s 1667/1668 home, the project set its sights on locating the archaeological remains of their earlier home that was memorialized in Anne’s poem?. Pōhakuloa Training Area (PTA) is located on the island of Hawaii in the Saddle region between Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and the Hualalai Volcanic Mountains. It extends up the lower slopes of Mauna Kea to approximately 6,800 feet in elevation and to about 9,000 feet on Mauna Loa. The training area is about midway between Hilo (pop. 50,000) on the east coast and Kawaihae Harbor to the west with approximately 50 minute commute times. PTA is the largest DoD installation in Hawaii. USAG-HI provides installation management service and support for three Army installations on Hawaii Island including PTA, Kilauea Military Camp, and Kawaihae Harbor.
