About the Role:
SummitWest is hiring a Cultural Resources Lead to conduct and oversee archaeological surveys, testing, monitoring, and excavation projects throughout California. This role combines field leadership with office-based reporting duties and team mentoring.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise or lead field teams conducting pedestrian surveys, monitoring, testing, and excavations
Prepare and review site records, artifact analyses, and technical reports
Manage and update project databases using Excel and GIS (ArcMap)
Communicate effectively with staff, clients, construction teams, and senior management
Support senior project managers in the execution of scopes of work
Ensure project compliance with NHPA Section 106 and other regulations
Train and mentor field staff to ensure high-quality deliverables
Perform and oversee physically demanding fieldwork in rugged environments
Lead field logistics and maintain accurate documentation (notes, photos, GPS data)
Regular travel to field locations across California, with occasional camping required
Qualifications:
Graduate degree (preferred) or Bachelor’s in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field with extensive field experience
4+ years of experience in archaeological monitoring, surveys, and excavation in California
Experience as a Field Director under BLM/National Forest Service permits (preferred)
Familiarity with California-specific CRM practices and regulatory compliance
Proficiency in Survey123, Field Maps, and GPS devices
Strong technical writing and analytical skills
Comfortable with field leadership and managing field logistics
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently
Positive and detail-oriented, with a proactive mindset
Must be California-based and pass SummitWest’s background check
