Cornerstone Environmental is a small, women owned archaeological firm based in Flagstaff, AZ. As a firm with 10 full-time employees and approximately 15 additional field technicians, employee input is highly valued. We work to ensure that staff have access to opportunities for growth and development, including working on specific projects to gain permitability and participating in trainings and conferences so that they can pursue their interests and career advancement. We focus on research-based cultural resource management throughout the American Southwest.

Education/Experience Requirements

Must possess a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Heritage Management, or a closely related field.?

Specialized experience may include, but is not limited to:??

  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience required?
  • Knowledge of National Environmental Policy Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Section 106, Section 110, and associated federal and state laws and regulations?
  • Previous report writing experience or desire to learn
  • Supervisory experience in cultural resource field work?
  • Strong interpersonal skills?
  • Ability to work independently and apply decision-making skills?
  • Ability to work within defined schedules and meet deadlines?

Additional Qualifications that can provide preference:??

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Heritage Management, or related field.?
  • Knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator, GIS, or Word?
  • Permittable in the Southwest?
  • Previous Southwest, specifically Arizona, experience?

Duties and responsibilities

These duties may vary depending on job assignment and firm needs.?

?

  • Running field projects with up to three crews?
  • Running a field crew up with up four people?
  • Overseeing field crews and completion of tasks??
  • Authoring and editing site documentation??
  • Remain current with protocol for conducting cultural resources work, particularly in the Southwest.??
  • Maintain good working relationships with state and federal agency contacts and clients.?
  • Develop and maintain Cornerstone’s quality assurance/quality control program and ensure that all fieldwork, analysis, and report production is conducted in accordance with company standards and guidelines.?
  • Oversee the training and mentoring cultural resources staff.?

  • Manage budgets and prepare proposals.?
  • Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner?
  • Work to promote Cornerstone’s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values?

Working conditions & Physical requirements

Office work is required although more limited in this position, which may include extended periods of sitting.?

?

Fieldwork will be the primary role which may include strenuous outdoor activity, such as walking, rough terrain in isolated areas in a variety of environments where terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, and covered with vegetation. Climate ranges from extremely dry to extremely wet and from hot to cold. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered. The work may require the use of protective clothing and footwear.??

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.?
  • Many of our projects are car camping during warmer months with AirBnb/Hotels used when light is limited or weather is too cold/hot. This transition each year is determined by the field crews.?
  • Overtime is generally not required but this is a task-based, salaried position.?
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperatures on steep, rocky, uneven terrain. Our crews do not camp when any low during the session is below freezing or highs exceed 100 degrees. Applicants should be safety conscious and look out for the safety of the crew.?
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a vehicle for local travel, as requested.?

Compensation

Annual compensation ranges from $65,000 to $79,000 and is commensurate with experience. This is an entry to mid-level position, but Cornerstone may consider more experienced individuals at a higher pay rate depending on experience. This position is exempt from overtime; however, per diem is paid additionally when appropriate.
