Re: Sabre 402 questions
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBill, I occasionally single hand our 402, and before that our 38. ?I haven¡¯t single handed a 362, but have sailed on several, and I would say the difference is just scale For me the biggest issue is getting on and off the dock.

Wind and 4 Garmin GWS 10
A bird must have made off with the wind vane on my Garmin GWS 10 wind transducer. It is completely missing.?
Does anyone have a Garmin wind vane kicking around that they would be willing to part with? Any alternative suggestions are welcomed.?

Sabre 402 questions
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThis question is specifically for 402 owners. After a 10 year hiatus from sailboat ownership after selling my Sabre 362 in 2015, I am considering buying a Sabre 402.? I am curious if many (any) 402 owners single hand their boats? ?I frequently singlehanded my former 362 and am wondering if it is more difficult or challenging on a 402.? My background- late 50¡¯s, relatively athletic, started with a Sabre 28, upgraded to a 362, since selling the 362 raced as crew on an IMX 40.? I understand everyone¡¯s skills and comfort levels are different so any and all thoughts welcome. ? Bill ? |

Re: Ports and hatches
Scott,
?
Replacing hatch lenses with commercially available acrylic/Plexiglas is something that a reasonably handy DIYer can tackle.? I replaced the crazed lenses on my S362 a few years back and have been very pleased with the results.
?
There is a video on YouTube by a guy with a Catalina named 'Country Dancer' (I think) that I found particularly useful.?
?
Also, at the suggestion of a friend of mine, I used double-sided tape to adhere the old lens to a rough-cut piece of acrylic/Plexiglas.? The old lens acted as a guide for my flush-cut router bit.? Perfect fit.
?
Send me a private message if you want more details.?

Hi Bill,
I just worked with on a S32 in the Portland area earlier this week and found him very responsive and helpful.? ?There are four surveyors as I understand it with Maine Design, and they travel up and down the northeast coast (from Camden) it seems.? ?Good guy and I learned more than in prior surveys.

Re: Insurance and other stuff
Fellow Sabre 30 MKIII owner; This past season I has a similar experience.? ARBACIA (1989 MKIII) remains in the water year round.? In northeast (GSB/Long Island) my slip has bubbler system no need to haul-out.? I do short haul in July when yards are nearly vacant and replace zincs and perform thorough hull, rudder and rig check.??Insurance company requested I have out-of-water survey.? I changed insurance company and actually found that my home, auto, personal liability company would allow an in-water survey (still have full year in-water with once a year short haul).? My company is AMICA; they have a separate marine division. Jim Gathard SV ARBACIA Sabre MKIII

Re: Insurance and other stuff
Pete, I feel ya! ?We are in Oregon currently building a small (550 sq ft) cottage on my wife's brother's 20 acres. ?My bro-in-law and I are the two main crew, although I must give kudos to Kris, my partner of more than 50 years. She's all in on the construction, fetching tools, nails, schlepping lumber, whatever it takes. ?At 71, 76 and 73 respectively, it's a challenge, but a rewarding one. ?Maybe it's foolish at my age to be hanging out over the gable end about 20' above the ground in order to nail a sub facia in place. ?I guess the many years of sailing and racing where one routinely has to be very physical and stretch one's comfort level have made it somewhat easier at this stage in the journey. ?We will not move here permanently for awhile, still wishing to have a presence in TX. ?But we also understand the heightened risks of living right at the edge of Galveston Bay, so have been trying to find something modest away from the coast. ?And then there's the issue of our beloved Orion, at present on the hard in Toms River, NJ. ?We brought Orion to the Eastern Seaboard in 2017 after sailing her from NJ to TX in 2012 to complete a major refit. ? Since leaving TX, we have led the gypsy life when aboard, usually a week or two every two months in the winter and full summers aboard the last three years. ?The thought of maintaining a boat on the East Coast while living on the West Coast though does not resonate. ?And no way I'm paying $7k to transit the Panama Canal to bring her to the West Coast. ?Beyond that, the best cruising grounds on the left coast are south of the border in Mexico and then Puget Sound and the San Juans and the Canadian coast. The Oregon coast is rugged with nasty inlets and shallow bays. ?Not user friendly. But wait! ?If we can find a reasonable housing compromise in TX, the flights to the East Coast are frequent and inexpensive. ?Therefore, I'm counting on several more years of sailing on Orion, though a sale is certainly more in our conversations these days. Btw, I've had insurance through Progressive since we bought Orion in 2012. ?Kevin Severance in Kemah TX is my agent. ?They have never demanded a survey, although I did one a few years ago to establish a cost basis. ?It's my feeling that Kevin gets more wiggle room due to the volume he brings to Progressive, but I could be wrong. ?It may surprise some, but the Houston/Galveston area has the fourth larges concentration of boats in the country.
