5.3 is enough for two people that are cruising. It's always good to be conservative with fresh water use on a boat. I got by nicely with heaters of that capacity for years. My 12 gallon tank is an extravagance that I would not replace if needed. 5-6 gallon is fine.

I may misunderstand. The description sounded like it tied into the thru hull.?

Would need a loop to prevent leaking backing into bilge wouldn’t it ??

I’m not sure I understand your question. If the shower drain were to leak, it would go to the bilge and be limited to how long the shower is running…
is that what you mean?

Hi All,

How have you determine when it is time to replace the keel bolts?

? So a leak in the shower drain can sink the boat ?

Re: Keel Boat Replacement

Hi Allison,
?
MARS is an hour from me so its the best alternative that I have at the moment.
I am not replacing the keel, just the bolts.? I will ship the keel to them and they will replace them by gouging out the original J-Bolts and replacing with new.
?
I have spoken with Bill a few times to discuss the process.? I have a few key people locally that I have worked with on previous refits and trust them to help with the process.

Terry,

If you have 20 feet, you have plenty of room.
Maximum road height clearance is 17.9" and I had the boat transported from MD.
I had measured it prior and it was under 12'.

Terry measure the binnacle and wheel as well. ?That is usually the highest spot and what we take down for shipping. ?With 20” you should be fine. You might want to check with Glen and ask if he has shipping heights for your boat.

I think the stantions might be the highest point. I would rather not have to remove them.
The barn door height is 20ft. My gut feel is that we should have plenty of room even with the hydraulic lift.

Thanks Jim, we have decided to change to the Isotemp 20 l (5.3 gal)?? heater for the replacement. It is about half the price of the Raritan and includes a drain and tempering valve. It has a stainless tank so rust should not be an issue. I will let you all know how the install goes.

Hi Jim,
Yes the original Raritan 12 gallon unit. When winterizing, I pull both cold and hot hoses off and join them together. Then I have to disassemble the bottom piping because that check valve down there will not let the tank drain. It is a royal pain! I keep saying I am going to improve it, but then I just put it back together the way it was. I don't love draining all that water in that compartment, but so far so good. I don't put antifreeze in the tank at all. No need to when it's about empty. A drain, with a hose barb and hose leading to the bilge would be REAL nice, but you know how much fun it is to work in that little space. A couple of years ago I took the shower door off to winterize it, and it now lives in my garage loft. It's just not needed, but with it you can SAY you have a dry head. I would be fine with a 6 gallon tank. That size got us by for years, and lighter for racing.

Tim I have some experience with Marrs. ?Be prepared for lots of delays and a bit of confusion on their part. ?They are very difficult to deal with as far schedules go. You will need drawings in CAD, and they want you to measure the keel bolt locations with a laser. ?Then when they are satisfied they will input the info and the build a mold and the finally ship it. ?This process took ?5 months after they recieved drawings. ?

If prices are even close the Mexican keel builders are far more professional and their castings are top notch.
