Re: Sabre 36 used sails
I happen to be in Florida atm and went over to Second Wind to check it out since it's ~15m from where I am. Great selection and John was quite nice. They had a spinnaker for my 36 in great shape but it had a bit H on the front. :-/ Worth checking out, though!

Re: Inverter/Charger
#Sabre402
Sounds as if you have a Sea Frost 120V A/C unit as do I. I can run mine on pass through AC from the inverter and can disconnect from shore power leaving the 400 Watts of Solar, to charge the batteries and they will remain fully charged with the the refrigeration and bilge pump running. I have not tried this in full on summer heat, more on that after this summer. ?Right now, it is only slightly on the plus side, because there is also some overhead involved because the Inverter uses some power to do the conversion from DC to AC.

Re: Replacing 402 hot water heater
Good tip on the?drain, Jim. Do you have the original Raritan heater? Arcadia's has a 3/4" tee on the cold water inlet with one end attached to the heater and a plug in the other end. I think this is supposed to be the drain,?but I have not been able?to remove it due?to the?tight space and dried?up pipe dope. The side srm on the tee goes to a bushing and a 1/2" check valve. I loosen the hose clamp on the other side of the valve and unscrew it for winterizing.and draining. When the check valve is loose, it is easier to remove the cold water hose from the barb on the other end and connect it to the hot water hose. I then blow out the system with compressed air and put about a quart of pink antifreeze into the hot water connection using a short hose and funnel,?as described in the Raritan manual.. Re: Keel bolts
Of greatest concern to me when I did this job was risk of galling. Stainless is notoriously susceptible to this ¡°cold welding¡±, a totally lay expression of what goes on but very descriptive of the outcome. ?I read enough about it to become confused and it ultimately led me to applying Tefgel to the threads when I reinstalled the nuts. I ?reduced the torque setting to 80; read about adjusting torque for lubricated threads vs dry threads. I assumed the torque spec of 90 lbs was dry since there was no specific mention of lube in the owners manual. 80 ft-lbs seems light but that¡¯s what the science says. Or even less if you apply the range of %¡¯s recommended for reduction.
?
Sabre says 90 ft-lbs is adequate to do the job so we¡¯re hardly stressing our keel bolts just siting there . Heeled over crashing to windward or rolling vigorously while surfing downwind is another story. We won¡¯t talk about piling her up on the Clumps or anything of that nature.
?
I find that crack particularly annoying and next time I redo the torque I will use this (see below) as the washer on a bed of epoxy putty slightly separated from the bolt to allow for a bead of sealant. Then run the torque up to some yet to be determined figure. Maybe 100 or 110 ft-lbs.? Need to consult my naval engineer buddies but I¡¯m sure that would be fine. We¡¯ll see.
This washer size could be maxed out to fit space in the bilge to really disperse the load, ¡seems like it would help.? https://www.mcmaster.com/products/thick-washers/material~316-stainless-steel/system-of-measurement~inch/screw-size~3-4/thickness~0-122-to-0-177-1/

Re: Keel bolts
If you just want to re-torque the nuts, you just need to loosen them slightly, before re-torquing. ? It's not actually necessary to remove them.? It's probably a good idea to remove them in order to look for corrosion on the bolts where the nuts normally sit.? That can happen.? If you are satisfied that there aren't any leaks around the bolts, I don't think it's absolutely necessary to remove the washers and rebed.? I suspect there are a lot of vintage Sabres out there with keel boats that have never been re-torqued.? I check mine at each haulout, since it's pretty simple to do.? But I only haul out about every three years.? Dave Castor Port Angeles, Wash 1986 S32 #077 On Sun, Mar 16, 2025 at 10:22?AM knightinnc via <Robertjohnknight=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Keel bolts
You are definitely overthinking it. Could any of those things happen? Yes.
?
Do your research, learn from others experiences by searching the forum.?
?
I made sure the area was dry around the bolts, and use some penetrating oil before attempting to loosen the nuts. Remember.. on the hard WITH the keel blocked. I remove the nuts and the washers and injected sealant, where it needed to be injected. I then installed the new washers and nuts and torqued to 90 pounds.
?
Easy. ( which is saying something when you're working on a boat).

Re: Inverter/Charger
#Sabre402
Hi Andy,
?
I recently had a warranty issue with my Victron 12/2000/80/50 Multiplus Compact on my S38 Mk2. Victron shipped me a brand new replacement , but having just upgraded to 600Ah of Victron Lithium, I
decided I wanted to go back with the Multiplus II 3000. Consequently I have a brand new in the unopened
box Multiplus 2000 Compact. Available at a good price.
However, at 20.5¡± x 10¡± x 5¡± the length dimension on this unit maybe too much for you to accommodate.
Because it was a replacement (although new) that unit has 3 years left on the warranty, rather than the usual 5 years.
On board Chardonnay, I opened up the dividing bulkhead between sections of the settee berth locker just fwd ?of the Nav Station and there was room enough for it to fit before running into the Sea Frost refrigeration unit, but of course on the 402 I don¡¯t know what complications there might be, including that air filter looking thing on the LHS of the picture and whether it is anything that you can move.
Perhaps your boat lives on a swinging mooring, rather than alongside, not requiring shore power to charge your batteries, unless alongside at a Marina. However, from the Lithium battery¡¯s point of view, a new Inverter/Charger will be good for them, because those old Freedom 10¡¯s did not have a Lithium battery charging profile and you wouldn¡¯t have to use DC to DC chargers to correctly charge the batteries when on shore power.

I can send a picture later. My boat is on an island and I have to wait for the ice to go out before I can get there.? Give me a couple of weeks.? Mike

Keel bolts
Thanks for all the responses. But my question is more basic. When I do this do I take the nut off and recaulk. If so are there any advice on that I have heard that it could be a difficult job. What are the potential difficulties. Is it possible to break the bolt or strip it or introduce a leak with an incomplete seal with the caulk. Anything else might go wrong?
If I break the bolt do I have to remove the keel and send it to Canada for repair? Perhaps I am overthinking it ? Thanks Tom Wanderer Sabre 38 mark 1 Celebration -- Thomas Wanderer Sabre 38 Celebration |
