volume question on the shari #programing

Hey guys,

So i'm going through the 8181-prog. I got everything, but it asked
for a volume level, what should i set that as?

Thanks,

Jed

Hey Steve,

Thank you so much, this is exactly what i was looking for. Awesome.

PL question on the shari #programing

Hey guys,

Anyone know the numbers you use for setting PL on the shari? I wanna
change the pl on my node, but forgot how to do it.

Cheers,

Jed

New SHARI build, LED lights operate but no radio communication - SOLVED #construction

A friend built a SHARI node.? While the unit seemed to communicate with the Raspberry PI ok, and the LED lights indicated it was working, there was no actual radio communication with the node.

Upon examination, a solder issue was noted at the transceiver module.? The transceiver, the large silver rectangular component, has some "castellated" cut-outs where it is soldered to the circuit board.? Due to a thin layer of insulation on the bottom of the module it doesn't quite touch the solder pads.? As a result it is possible to fully wet the solder pad without actually connecting to the module.

A proper joint should flow solder from the pad up into the castellated cut-out.? But not too much; piling up too much solder could short the connections to the transceiver's shield on top of the module.? After repairing the solder connections, the SHARI node now operates normally.

A photo of the as-found condition is attached.

Re: SHARI USB Connectivity

Here is some more technical information about SHARI's USB connections.?

The USB connector nearest the edge of the enclosure is connected to the CM119B USB audio IC.? This is the device that Allstar communicates with.? The other USB connector (middle) is connected to the CH340G USB to serial converter.? This is used to communicate with the SA818 radio module using digital RS-232 serial TX/RX to program it's frequency, PL, etc using the 818-prog program.? The 5VDC and GND of the two USB connector are connected in SHARI as they are in the Raspberry Pi.? ?Therefore you can operate SHARI with a single USB M/F cable extender connected from any RPi USB port to the outer USB connector on SHARI.? Like wise you can program the SA818 radio module in SHARI by moving that cable to the other (middle) USB connector, rebooting your RPi and running the 818-prog program.

The model 3 and 4 RPi's can supply about 1.2 amps via the USB ports.? SHARI requires about 500mA in transmit and about 140ma in receive.

That makes sense. That was my other idea if I couldn't find a small enough hub, but I'll probably do that instead. I just want something a bit more compact and functional than my Pi-on-a-Motorola radio setup now. Now to just get them in stock..

You can get two (or one) short usb cables 6¡± and position it on top of the Pi.? One is for the device and other is to program the device.?

SHARI Availability Update.

Our order for assembled SHARI SMT boards is now in production.? The good news is the bare PC board fabrication is complete.? However the order shows a projected PCB SMT assembly time of 55 to 70 days.

This sounds like a fun addition to my micro-shack and will give my unloved Pi 2 something to do (hi).

Re: Info Needed #programing

Please refer to the SA818 Programming Manual located in the Files section of this group as you read the following explanation.

The Channel Spacing option (0 or 1) is meant to select between narrowband (2.4 kHz deviation) and wideband (4.8 kHz deviation).? However, this option has no effect on the SA818 modules sold on the internet.? They are always narrowband.? This is not compatible with the 5 kHz deviation we use for our FM radios.? Thus the SA818 modules used in SHARI are procured directly from NiceRF and are permanently programmed for 5 kHz deviation.? Thus you can use a "0" or a "1" as it has no effect.

A squelch setting of 0 means the squelch is always open (listen mode).? 1 is minimum squelch and 8 is maximum squelch.

I have a Shari! Question on programming, The first option of programming is Channel Spacing... the options are 0 and 1, what is the effect of each??
My Second question is the Squelch Setting .. you have options of 1-9, is 1 low (tight) and 9 High (Lose)? I cant find this info anywhere.....

Thanks....

NiceRF SA818 programming manual

Hi Doug,

You can use CDCSS (DCS) as well as CTCSS.? The codes are in the NiceRF SA-818 programming manual.? I will upload a copy to the Files section.

The programming manual also describes a "Close Tail Command" (on page 6).? I suspect this is reverse burst.? This instruction is not currently available in the "818-prog" program but it would be easy to add it.? The source code (Python 2) for the 818-prog by W0ANM is available if some member of our SHARI group would like to experiment!

Steve - N8AR

Is there any way with SHARI or the sa818 to either use DCS or to turn on reverse burst to remove the squelch blast heard on the local radio?
