Refinishing Wolfrace wheels

I'd like to have my Wolfrace wheels refinished as the clear coat has yellowed and oxidation has occurred in areas where the clear coat has lifted from the aluminum. I have tentively selected a wheel refinisher, but I'm a bit reluctant to have it done as it will require machining of the surface. Has anyone had their Wolfrace wheels refinished and is there anything to be concerned about? As a note, the wheels are in otherwise perfect condition with not a single nick to any of the rims.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Head Gasket vs Quench

Appreciate the thoughts, gents. It's a bit of topic drift to focus on CR, my fuss on this primarily concerns the quench characteristics and those would have been central to Lotus' going at the block as described by DC. I've got a NOS HG in hand, so that's an easy option. Pistons are in the picture as well, Kemp offering either his usual 2.2 set at 11.5, or jobbing out to a pal ( as he puts it ) for a set at 10.5. FWIW, my engine Sims specify 96+ octane (R+M) /2 for the build I'm targeting, more like 98+ at 11-1 CR. That's with optimal spark timing, otherwise to be retarded at points in the range if compensating for lesser grade. Further on CR, Sims modeling 11 vs 10.5 generate minimal difference in power outcome, unsurprisingly. Seems wise to opt for the 10.5's, therefore.

So on deck I've got HG, head-block studs, at the forefront, cam and head work looming before long. Been futzing around in emails long enough on this, trying to move it forward.

Cheers

Unless you can find some new old stock the old Laminated metal haven¡¯t been available for ages so the new composite is the only option thats available most places. Taken by itself the .020 thicker gasket lowers compression by about half a point. So 10:1 becomes 9.5:1 etc. If your putting a new head gasket on are you doing any machining to the head? Any decking of the head will cut into the .020¡± gain of the gasket and reduce the compression hit. Basically if the head is decked .010 then the gasket only adds .010.?

When Lotus changed gaskets in the 90¡¯s they didn't do it for the thickness difference, presumably they did it because its a better gasket. They compensated for it by machining the block .020¡± lower. That¡¯s easy to do in manufacturing, they have to cut it anyway so adjusting for a different gasket is a piece of cake. ?if your super serious you could do the same thing but that means machining the block and re setting all of the liner heights. If your liners are low or if the block deck is rough then thats something to consider but I wouldn¡¯t do I it for the compression unless it was needed for something else. Rather than decking the block the better fix would be higher compression pistons. Again its a lot of expense just for .5 compression but if your doing pistons anyway then add .5 to what you were going to get. ?

The original Goetze gasket as supplied by Lotus was .supposed to be 020¡± thicker but I think the aftermarket composite that JAE sells ends up being a little thinner. Not the full .020¡± but a little bit. That¡¯s based on measuring some used JAE gaskets and Used Lotus composite gaskets. I don't remember the actual difference but it was on the order of .005 or something after crushing.?

Perhaps pertinently, why did Lotus need HG's of varying laminations with the introduction of the 912?

?I don¡¯t know what¡¯s happened to it but I know what you¡¯re probably seeing on Google Maps is the house, his house, and a huge deep lot with a massive workshop that had eight under and up on lifts and then a work area and then like five shipping containers with parts but yes I¡¯m hoping somebody bought it all, I had picked up my overhauled motor and 3 L automatic transmission there in July and so saddened to see him pass on as I fumble my way through the labyrinth of getting the motor and transmission back in my SM, and since my SM was an automatic then that¡¯s why I had to buy the Esprit to get the flavor of the five speed! and I certainly say it belongs in that car not the SM as the GT that it is, Gordon

Racing with the devil¡.

October 1st of 2020 I was told that I had a mass in my brain.

Yeah¡holy shit!

I took myself out of all drivers seats immediately.

What followed was over a six month battle with the VA and private doctor that choose to ignore what could possibly be a Glioblastoma that doubles every two months.

After a VA Neurologist, horrified at my story took mercy and got me into Moffitt cancer center in Tampa in record time, and wizard surgeon got on my case, I was processed through testing, evaluation an into a ¡°awake¡± craniotomy to remove the tumor¡and retain my mobility and driving skills. On April 7th the tumor was removed while I discussed racing cars with the surgeon, as part of the ¡°awake¡± surgical guidance. Our goal was to get me back to racing in six months, he was confident.

It¡¯s April 18th and I¡¯m just barely into this adventure.

Very few, other than my cousin in NJ, a couple driver and childhood friends and my supportive buddy, Uber driver, mentor, and driving coach, Reggie Smith, knew any thing about this. I had been making extensive preparations to leave this earth.

I have set this aside for months¡.it¡¯s now Oct 1st 2021.

In those 6 months I had a couple months, after the April 22nd Moffitt follow up, when I was told tumor was non-cancerous, but not much else. More questions than answers. Then two months, that I thought I was Batman, taking on and completing a few projects. Confident enough about the future to order an expensive, ground up, new motor for the Lotus FF out of Savanna.

Then I hit a wall. No energy, slowly losing the lost mobility I had gained and suddenly requiring 12-16 hours of sleep a day/night. Not much left for basic housekeeping, feeding me or the critters. Battling the VA on numerous other issues. Race car work, out of the question.

No real help, PT or home care while Reggie shuttled me cross state for endless scans and tests for a multitude of medical problems on top of the brain tumor rehab. It all ground me down to dust, and that ¡®hit that machine gun nest¡¯ attitude started to wane into despondency and make me think about that new motor and if I¡¯d ever get to use it. Considered selling all my cars¡.my life.

Told and shown via detailed MRIs during Moffitt visit the 28th ¡°You are cured, you have no tumor, you will never be bothered by this again¡± MRI shows only vague hazing that is surgery scar tissue. There are a few things that need integrated to stop the sluggishness (Meds, PT, OT, diet and exercise). Moffitt and VA neurologist are working together on this.

So I am back in the fight. The next 3 months may be the hardest, regaining those last percent of mobility that will satisfy me and restore confidence to get safely back in a race car.

I am looking to get Moffitt to sign off my race license medical this coming March, race again in June. Fingers crossed.
