Christening of the S1 S2 Group.....

Welcome to all the seriously addicted owners of Early Esprits. Hopefully this
group will grow to fill the hole in the Esprit Fact File that does not well
address the unique problems of the early cars. Enjoy, Dennis

Re: Christening of the S1 S2 Group.....

Thanks Dennis for setting up the list.
I'm still behind and will fill out the questionaire soon.

Looking forward to others joining in.

Re: [S1S2owners] Re: arrrrgh......

Bob, this was a 85 degree car until recent. Has all new 10" fans that come on
with the key and stay on. Only switched cooling is the bay fan. It has good
thermostat and recent inlet gasket that was leaking. Blew hoses a few times
and dumped coolant due to bad motor mounts letting the engine dance around
and separate hose connections. I believe this is a demon of a different
color, perhaps air in the hoses. Does what it wants pending mood. Sometimes
85 sometimes 120. Only thing I would suspect is the stat again, as there are
no leaks. Dennis

PS why not write a short paper on cooling for the files.....hint.

arrrrgh......

Hellava time gettin this posted...4th try...my keys are screwed up
and keep sending things to the twilight zone.
Waking at 0'dark thirty this morning and discovering that F1
doesn't kick off til afternoon, Decided to catch up on maintenance.
Had blown a coolant hose a few days ago and the car had been topped
off with water only (running a wee bit hot) so drained from the fill
tank and refilled with coolant. Also had a new distributor cap and
rotor long over due. Put those on with only minimal trouble (one of
the metal clips pulled loose from the wire and had to be re-crimped)
Reset the idle running low. And cleaned and stored the tools from the
wheel bearing project that were scattered all over the garage for the
past two weeks. Car still needs a good detail from the weeks sitting
in underground garage.Yaa for black cars at night.
Well, I will settle in for the race and go for a drive,
drinks and some seafood on the intercoastal later....in need of a
lazy coastal cruise.
I have been sorting thru my Lotus files and will be posting
some more common early Lotus problems and cures as time permits.

Re: arrrrgh......

Dennis,

When my water pump went the weep hole was pissing a pretty steady
stream. (2nd day at a track day at Wakins Glen). I put a machine screw
in the weep hole, but that just slowed things down so I made a few
pit stops along the way to refill with water. I edned up getting an
exchange unit sent ASAP from Bean as a LOG was coming up in a few
days. Previous to that (a few years previous) I found most of my
hot running problems were due to a PO using stop leak instead of
fixing a leak. It does wonders to clog the radiator and prevent heat
transfer to the air from the fins. Boiling out the rad and resoldering
the leaks did wonders. Also, I have had the otter switch go (check on
and off temp points with oven themometer). Also I've had to resolder
and rewire about the fan relay (an article was in the ReMarque about
this which applied to me (high resistance due to badly crimped
wire).I ended up replacing the relay with something more appropriate
while at it (Lotus was using way above spec for 3 fans).

Of course I've also had a few "false alarms" due to the infamous
voltage stabilizer sticking (temp reads high along with fuel level).

Also make sure you have the correct 3-way thermostat installed as
water won't get pushed up to the rad, but recirculate locally if not.

Aren't these cars fun? ;-)

Lotus automobilia

WHY IS THERE SO LITTLE LOTUS STUFF AVAILABLE?Does lotus not make or
license anything? If that is the case why not? There is so little it
is snapped up at outragous prices on ebay. The Shummi/F car pricing
is downright obscene. Having once had a T-shirt bus, I cannot
understand why there are not some killer lotus wear out there.Just

Weber DCOE's

Kelly Williams

Hey everyone.

Anyone here ever gotten their car to run well with a set of Weber DCOE 45's?
I am running a pair of version 15/16's. I have seen a jetting list for a
version DCOE 45-9, but not a DCOE 45-15/16...

Eventually I plan to get rid of them in favor of an aftermarket EFI unit,
but it would be nice to drive it with OK emissions and some sort of
drivability for now...

Re: arrrrgh......

Dennis,

Maybe I'm not listening close enough, but did you say no leaks (as in
water is not boiling over and shooting out the overflow?) If all
appears otherwise fine 'cept the reading on the temp guage I would
suspect the voltage stabilizer. (It can be fine one minute and seem
like it's gonna peg the temp next). The clue is to watch your fuel
guage. If it used to be at 1/4 of a tank and now reads over 1/2 then
it's the stabilizer. (it gets stuck to the ~15V high of the alternator
insted of switching beteen high and low to average out to something
like 10 volts). Lotus should be shot for using this mechanical device
and not something solid state. I've been able to "unstick" the
stabilzer by "twapping" the face of the temp guage with my fingernail
(the stabilzer is mounted to the rear of the guage and the shock will
unstick it you're lucky).

Of course if water is boiling out the overflow then this is not the
case.

I couldn't agree more.

For years there weren't any models of the cars available, thankfully
Autoart have fixed that.

I think we must have it better over here, than you guys over the pond as
the models are readily available, Lotus do have there own range of clothing
pens stickers etc, but it does tend to concentrate on the Elise, there is
some new esprit stuff though.

The shop for Lotus stuff is in the foyer / reception at the factory so it's
rather difficult to browse, but you can get the stuff mail order, i would
of thought that the dealers in the US have the stuff available as well.

As for the OLD stuff well it's so rare everywhere, although there are quite
a few old models / toys of the Lotus 25 still about at toy fairs.

As for stuff from the factory, well i think most of it is still in use ;-)

The canteen at Lotus has some really nice old pictures on the walls.

If i can help anyone to get anything from overhere let me know.

Geoff Bye.

Changes

Please note the addition of S3 to all list addresses etc. I have
added the S3 due to international status. Dennis

Problems...

If anyone has problems accessing the list site, please let me know, I
will walk you thru it. It may tell you oops thre is no S1S2 list.
There is not, It is now the S1S2S3owners site and should be called up
and mailed to in that manner. Growing pains, patience please,Dennis

Brake pads,rear

I'm looking for numbers or a source for rear pads for my 78.
Porterfield just delivered a box full of brake SHOES to me that
obviously wont fit my Esprit, an Elite perhaps, but I don't think I
can hammer them into my calipers. Check your part #s and talk with
someone knowledgeable. Dennis

Thanks Dennis

Dennis,

Thanks for all your hard work in putting together this excellent
forum.
I have responded to the recent poll but, to be honest, I would like
to see all that information and more in the files section.
Especially lots of carburetor info. Please no jokes about sand
blasting!

I have also put a picture of my car in the photo section, sorry about
the size. I will change the picture when I finally get it running
and can move it to a more picturesque location. A picture of me
sitting behind the wheel with a big smile on my face while my wife
(all 105 lbs. of her) pushes it across the parking lot just wont do.

Pretty car terry, great shape. Its a shame about the state of the
carbs. I will make a special attempt to find and post all my carb
stuff in the files. Regards Dennis

Re: Brake pads,rear

I was looking for Porterfields R-4s street/comp compound. I suppose I could
have tingle ship to porterfield for the outline and thickness and have them
forward all to me once made up. I sent them a Girling #GDB619 but don't know
if it will be of use to them. Once I get it all sorted I guess I should order
a few sets. Anyone else interested? Thanks for the source. regards, Dennis

Re: Brake pads,rear

Ian Munro

Dennis,

I got rear pads last year from Don Tingle. I assume all the ususal parts
supply suspects will have them. Are you looking for something special or
just the OEM replacement pads?

Ian Munro.
