I think I have part of it, like the back plate, or maybe the airbox. I think I ordered one by mistake. I'll check for you later tonight. I bought them at SJ. Bill -----Original Message-----

Re: Refinishing Wolfrace wheels
To bring closure to this topic, I sent the refinisher several pictures of the wheels.? He said that he does not recommend machining the wheels and that it's not a matter of technic but the wheels themselves.? He said that due to the age of the material, exposing pits in the cutting process is likely and that the clear coat will show a peppered look.? In addition, the stamped lettering on the rim is so close to the machined surface that there is a risk of machining the lettering.? Instead he recommended polishing the wheels.??
So I will attempt the polishing process Tony described above in order to retain the original machined surface. Again, thanks for all your responses.? Much appreciated. Jeff |

Re: Refinishing Wolfrace wheels
I mentioned the above issues to my refinisher today.? He said that they can reproduce the finish to within 99% of original, pending condition of wheels, without removing excess material.? I plan on meeting with him next Friday and will let you know results when the wheels are done.
Thanks for your input. Jeff 77 S1 139H |

Re: Refinishing Wolfrace wheels
I have a very careful method of hand polishing Wolfrace wheels that are in good condition with light to moderate corrosion under the clearcoat.? I have done it to five sets over the years, along with occasional light retreatments.? I am a preservationist at heart, and I do not like what I have seen in terms of refinishing. My two gripes with refinished wheels are:? 1) That the grooves are too wide from any shop in the US that I have seen.? i.e., the number of grooves per inch or cm is too few.? It makes the wheels look coarse.? 2)? Refinishers take way too much metal off of the wheels.? This is evidenced by the pockets along the outer rim, where the Wolface name and date codes are.? I have seen some of these that are so shallow, like more than 1mm has been taken off.? At a rate like that, a wheel set gets to be refinished only one time before the pockets are wiped off altogether.? ?I would not trust a set of Wolfies to a mass production wheel refinishing shop, and I would not trust them with any shop unless I could discuss preservation of the depth of the pockets, groove pitch, etc., with the person who is actually doing the work, and get it in writing. So instead, I employ this careful method of polishing: 1)? I strip the clear coat with a brush-on gel type citrus stripper from Home Depot.? ?Brush it on, let it sit, wipe it off, rinse.? It gets 99% of the clearcoat off, leaving only a few spots to really have to scrape at, which I do with a plastic putty knife or bondo spreader.? ?I only apply it to the outer surface. 2)? I use Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish -- it is less abrasive than some of the other brands.? I want to preserve the now exposed grooves.? I carefully polish the wheel by only running the rag/polish in the direction of the grooves.? By hand only.? If you go in circles, or use an orbital or rotary power tool, you will wear them down.? It only takes a few passes over most of the freshly stripped wheel to get it to a mirror-like finish, and if you didn't overdo it, you will see the prismatic rainbows here and there in the right light. 3)? For the corroded spots, I use the same Mother's polish, only I press real hard and do whatever it takes to get it to mostly go away.? It is a bit tedious for someone who isn't accustomed to doing things by hand.? But the corrosion will all polish off.? By doing it by hand (with a fingertip, usually), you can pinpoint it and not overdo it, not wear down excessively the surrounding area. 4)? Don't polish the back side or the insides of the slots.? They will be okay. 5)? Even though the Mother's polish leaves behind some kind of sealing wax, I wax the wheels anyway.? ?And when I wash the car, the wheels come clean very easily, and I pat them dry with a towel or paper towels so they don't get water spots.? ?I wax the wheels whenever I wax the car. Using this method, the wheels look incredible and stay looking nice for 2-4 years depending on usage, and I usually re-polish them very lightly to bring back that original gleam before I do a major show? ?(for regular show or cars & coffee display, they will look acceptable for years).? Each time you polish them, it wears the grooves down a little bit and loses the prismatic refractions, but even after several polishes they at least still have the grooves and look better than the wheels that someone took a power tool to.? If I can find someone whose lathe will put small, fine grooves like they originally had, and who will cut the absolute minimum off of the wheels, then I will have them cut and powder coated.? Cheers, Tony K.? ?:)?

I'd like to have my Wolfrace wheels refinished as the clear coat has yellowed and oxidation has occurred in areas where the clear coat has lifted from the aluminum. I have tentively selected a wheel refinisher, but I'm a bit reluctant to have it done as it will require machining of the surface. Has anyone had their Wolfrace wheels refinished and is there anything to be concerned about? As a note, the wheels are in otherwise perfect condition with not a single nick to any of the rims. Thanks, Jeff |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI keep it in the trunk.?That said my other 4 wheels are beat up and probably need to be polished/refinished.? If I did, I would wax the wheel surfaces afterwards. Not sure there is anything else that can be done to protect them. I suppose these new ceramic coats would work, but don¡¯t have any experience on vintage metal. Rob
