Re: Downs Tankcar Parts
Rusti sold his Downs business (DMR) to Merlin Becker of Manheim Machine Tools (MMT).? When Merlin passed away, Greg Berndtson bought the business from Merlin's estate, creating Iron Rails Models.? Personal reasons forced Greg to suspend IRM, which is the current state of the business.? Time will tell what happens next.

Good Morning:
?
In regard to the above, is there anyone out there that does service work?? It appears that the drive between motor and driver gears are not engaging.? It has been running fine up until a few days ago when engine began to jerk along the track then nothing.? I am able to manually push engine along the track with all wheels freely rotating.? This is why I am assuming it has to do with the gears.? Any help? and suggestions would be appreciated.

CPR bought the DM&E; around this time of year they run a Christmas train around the upper Midwest.? I believe Huron, and its engine facilities, was the functional end of the "Alco Line."

Okay two suggestions basically indicating the same thing as I had thought!? So I had already chiseled out most of the sand.? Because it's very fine it's all over.? However under the white sand, I did find a grayish sand also,
which is what Roger is suggesting.? I think I'll try some less-white then selectively sprinkled with a darker color.? Real sand is the correct color but is too coarse.? So I might not glue it down yet--going back to "mulling it over".? And I'll then take Bill's
advice with using less of it too.? Part of that problem is that we're looking down on the scene, where in the 1:1 world we normally would be looking across at the scene.? That angle changes the perspective.? That is also proven by the scenes that John D. sent
me--face it, that little structure is really a 'nothing' in a full rail terminal scene.?
I have a scene shot in Huron South Dakota of the former CNW, later DM&E, then ??.? They utilized a? tankcar stood on end, so it's footprint was probably 10' but as I recall it had a fairly tall pile of spillage--which is great
for the crews to keep in the trunk of there cars--for sanding snowy roads and traction on solid ice too??
I'll be sending a creative thought award to you guys--no money, but you also made me smile!

Re: Layout Progress
Great to be making some headway!
?
If I am reading the track plan correctly for where you have bridges on the "south" leg, it seems as though the grades might be steep?? Would be great to understand what's going up and what's going down.

Keep it going!

Re: Nimco wheels
Austin Birkey
Hi Robert, I think I made an error when I wrote down the size....I think what you have is the correct size but I'll double check and get back to you. Thank you, Austin? On Wed, Dec 18, 2024, 2:19?AM Robert Carter via <splsaab=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Nimco wheels
Not sure exactly how many driver sizes NIMCO made, but besides the 1.25"/80" they also made a 1.125"/72" driver. I have attached pics them side by side. Unfortunately, I don't have any extra 80" drivers for you. I have quite a few 72" but that won't help you.
Two other important things to note:
1) you not only need to match the driver diameter, but also if it is insulated or non-insulated. The insulation is paper between the tire and driver center. In my pictures, the 72" is insulated and the 80" is not.
2) NIMCO made heavy and light counterweights. This will only affect appearance not affect operation. If you compare your drivers to my 80" looks like you have the smaller counter weights. The counterweights are a separate casting, so if you still have the one off the broken wheel you can swap it onto the replacement driver if it is different or missing.

Re: Sandhouse
开云体育Bob, I don’t like using the commercial “sand”: it looks too much like snow. I have used a tan or buff N scale ballast which looks less garish. Roger Nulton ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Bob Werre

For some years it just sat there and I've been known to move things around, so I mull over things for a long time.? However I did put down some spilled sand a few months ago as we often see that around sand facilities.? Spilled sand isn't valuable so it's not like coal that gets picked up by crew or 'neighbors' who can use it.? So the result is what happened, but I really don't like the result! With that in mind and like the TV program--What would you do! comes to mind.? Help me here--all suggestions are welcome.? Bob Werre |
Downs Tankcar Parts

Downs Tankcar Parts

I believe the tank car line went to Iron Rail after Rusti Downs died?? And I think I heard that someone else picked it up later?? Who knows the current state of where the tank car parts and production facilities are?
I just bought a pair of Downs tankers without inspecting them closely and need end platform castings and the etched brass corner steps.? Anyone have extra parts from they'd part with from when Downs sold parts and kits?

Bob,

Was your kit put out by LVM or one of the others who offered this kit?

I have managed to scare up the two, attached images of the NS Sandhouse in Norfolk, VA.? Looks like this is, indeed, the prototype for the model.
