Re: Des Plaines Gunderson Huskies
开云体育----- Original Message -----
From: Stan Stokrocki via groups.io <sscalerr@...> The kits are from Larry Jackman's S Scale America, prior to Des Plaines' ownership. Microscale did do S scale decals. Stan Stokrocki > > > >> > > > >> I seem to recall that Mr Jackman sold individual unit kits and also three-unit kits.? The latter were intended to be assembled drawbar-connected.? The three wells then would technically be one car for switching and accounting purposes.? The 3-well assemble would have one car number.? This was no doubt based on some?prototype practice, but it obviously never became popular.? I suspect most if not all of these 3-unit cars were separated and?given proper couplers and individual numbers.
?
Like Bill Lane, I am surprised your coupler height came out correct.? I had that coupler height problem with the RTR cars and solved it with 28 inch wheels from AM.
?
Good luck with finding or making containers.? It seems the?Larry Jackman container kits made containers?a ?little short to avoid interference with truck wheels, especially high-rail wheels. ?
?
When you get your containers going, don't put a 20 footer on top of anything else.? The 40-foot and longer containers have no support at?their center for anything else above them.

Re: Des Plaines Gunderson Huskies
开云体育If I'm not mistaken, Bill bought my
double stacks a few years back, and these were the original
Jackman/S scale America.? The kit included RB trucks and plastic
wheels.? Unfortunately the parts tree had a rough area where they
were attached.?? They were built with those purpose built RB
trucks which seemed a tad smaller than the Ace versions...aka
before AM/SHS versions.? Later on I asked Ron S.? if he had any of
those left.? He sent me handful of parts from which I made another
pair and a spare, perhaps--I used the enclosed plastic wheels at
first, but replaced them with NWSL metal versions.? I didn't have
any coupler problems.
I'll also mention that the RB trucks
had two versions.? The first ones were made thicker where they
attached to the bolster, the sideframes also didn't equalize.? The
second version had thinner cross sections and equalized.
Initially I did have height problems
with the spine cars.? I owned the sample set AM provided that I
bought later.? Ron B. sent me scale flanged wheels for those--I
was doing a lot of buying, selling, swapping, at that time!

Another USPS story.......
Smiling Ed just received this email from one of his customers: Hi Ed I'm smiling! The goods came yesterday.? Yesterday night, that is, around 7:30 pm.? USPS left it at my mailbox, which is 300 feet from my house. Well, I wasn't going? out with the temp at 6 degrees, so I went early this morning when it was minus 2.? The box was left at the base of the mailbox in a pile of snow, but everything is okay.? By the way, great packing job. -- Ed Loizeaux Los Altos, CA |
Re: Western Maryland #6414 - The Rest of the Story
Bud,
Yes, that's Bobby "inspecting the damage" after running over the derail.? He was famous for his polka dot hats.? I wasn't aware they had "aerodynamic properties".? I've attached three more pictures of Bobby.? One is in Majestic Mining's Alco S-2.? The other is him sitting on the porch of his company house.? He was a jovial guy and beloved by everyone who ever visited the BC&G.? I wish I had been aware of the derailment story when I met with him in the 1990s.? It would have been fun to see what he recalled of the event!? ? ?

Re: Western Maryland #6414 - The Rest of the Story
Brooks, ? I love these personal interest BC&G stories! Is that Mr Carruthers on the catwalk of the 6414? His polka dot blue and white cap is a railroader’s obligatory “Kromer” cap. They were originally designed by an engineer named Stormy Kromer who tired of his cap blowing off when sticking his head out the window on his steamers. Their “balloon” shape helps them stay put.
? ? ?Funny story about running over a derail! That’s exactly what happened when I worked on the BCK…..we ran over an untargeted derail in high weeds when leaving the B&O at night. No target, ?and switch wasn’t locked, both no no’s.? ? ? ?For a mention of S content, does anyone have working derails on their ? S scale layouts? I know they were once made probably HO but for code 100 rail. ? ? ? Bud Rindfleisch |
Re: Des Plaines Gunderson Huskies
开云体育Not sure how to answer you Bill. The plastic wheels in the kit that I bought from Bill Roberts measured to 33”. ?I used 33” wheels from American Models. With your missive in my head I was curious as to what I would find when I worked through the instructions and installed the Kadee couplers in gear box part of the body spacer.? As you can see in the pictures I sent, they work with the gauge on the track at the back of my work desk and work with the other stock on which I have Kadee couplers. I was surprised given what you had commented.? Some blow ups of that test track at the back of my desk attached. Sorry, I do not have an exact pic of the car mated to the gauge. ?There is also a very short snip of two of them connected to my GP-35 with Kadee.? Re: Des Plaines Gunderson Huskies
开云体育I am curious how a correct coupler height was achieved with the first release car sand normal sized wheels. I am running custom 26” wheels to lower the cars to correct coupler height. With the built in draft gear there is no way to make any changes. ? ? Thank You, ? See my layout progress at:

Track update
开云体育This is just a sort blast update of the Pennsy S Models track project. Pennsy S Models ?was the encouragement for Micro Engineering to buy the Tomalco track company.? Micro Engineering was the actual manufacturer of the Tomalco track for many years. They will now carry on the line with their products of other scales. ? I don’t know some details yet like when they will have S track for sale.. I will see them on Saturday. Dan is helping them get a new website up with a shopping cart to make ordering direct possible. ? We have been concentrating on turnouts. Brian Jackson has stepped up to the challenge in a huge way. We are so very lucky to have him on the PSM team. ? Thank You, ? See my layout progress at:

You'd probably think a 6'x 12' railroad could be knocked out in a week or month, but frankly, my heart hasn't been in it.? I plodded along doing this 'n that on it for the past 6 months for short periods of time.? The recent cold snap sort of motivated me to get off my butt and finish the trackwork.

Now for some debugging and think about scenery.

Hi Bill -- It looks really nice.? ?One of the things I notice is the "curved" point rail in the?turnout -- it is straight rather than curved.? ?This was common?amongst Atlas HO turnouts, but it didn't seem?to cause much trouble because they are a bit "sloppy."? ?Still, I bet that if you were to check the track gauge on the curved?side from the frog to the tip of the point, it might need a bit of adjustment.? ?Easy to do --? a bit of pressure at the center of the point will give it the "bow" it needs (IF it needs it). Re: Des Plaines Gunderson Huskies
Bill, Are these NOS or still available from DPH? John D ?Bought this Des Plaines 3 car Gunderson Husky Stack kit from Bill Roberts a while back. Built them over a series of five evenings last week. All were modified to accept metal 33” hi rail wheels from American Models. The metal wheels definitely help with the weight. |
