Re: On topic (S scale railroad modeling)

If I may I'll add on a couple of experiences I've had in the S part of the hobby!? When Houston hosted the NMRA national in 89'.? I was one of three S layouts and one Sn3 open, plus our module setup so we were a big chunk of that could be seen.? BTW, it was also the time that 3/16's S scale railroading was introduced to the world.? Hundreds of brochures were handed out to all who attended the trainshow segment so we did rattle the cage a bit.? And something amazing happened the magazine was actually printed and was available in hobby shops! --what happened?

?One evening when I was open, Jettie Padget, Ed Loizeaux and perhaps Bill Wade were in attendance, along with Billy and Danny Click (my operators). Other guests were viewing when one of 'ours' spoke rather loudly--Wow, this is S! Wow this is so great!? what a great size! etc.etc.etc! The others might have thought we were crazy but I think it did get attention--just like the guy selling the same mattress', used cars out in front; as anybody else making a statement!
?
I'm not sure what Ed was expecting but certainly the staff gave it a good effort, and I"m sure Ed's piggy bank was feeling it.? However, few of the rest of the scale did or were able to join in!? The same thing happened with the S Sig, Then Bill Wades magazine, then the last version of that magazine.? I wonder, if anybody remembers when one of my photo features and Dick Karnes's railroad ran in the same issue of Great Model Railroads.? Having two articles published--I would say a fairly good effort for our scale!? I encouraged SHS to run a full page ad in MR--not sure if that happened--??

I've often mentioned that at most local shows we have our modules setup but zero dealers to profit financially from it--the late Tom Henderson (Side Tracks) was the exception but he's been gone for several years. ? Then just as recently I'm sure some body's still got a box of old AF track and maybe a worn out Pacific lying around--probably the same as the last 20 years!

I don't know why or how Gilbert could have done better earlier but so much of that has to do with store space--just like Pepsi fights with Coke for shelf space and floor space!? You have to reach a "deal": with the stores. Then add in ad space in magazines and their perceived markets.? Toward the end, Gilbert's HO Pikemaster showed a 5 yo kid when they should have shown a young adult or only a middle aged guy to compete with the likes of Varney or Penn Line. ?

Anything you show works to a degree but it needs to be continuously but my fittings and boiler are leaking.

I wonder if a factor contributing to the level of acceptance of S by the broader modeling community through the years has been the tendency for S modelers to stay 'close to the fold' rather than mingling and engaging with the larger model railroading community.? Maybe it was necessary since the scale is complicated with compatibility issues and so it's been necessary to hook up with other S modelers to get the answers.? But how many S modelers have been actively engaged with their local NMRA multi-scale clubs and operating groups...where modelers in other scales can be exposed to S?? How many S modelers over the years have been avid readers of, and contributors to, the multi-scale modeling magazines like Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman?? Perhaps we've spent too much of our time talking among ourselves instead of 'mixing it up' with N, HO and O modelers so they can see first hand what S is all about.?
?
And I wonder what the impact of having a national organization specific to S has had on the growth of S.? While a national S organization certainly can coordinate outreach efforts and support wonderful resources like the NASG website,? perhaps being a member of the NASG and/or local S-only clubs has replaced membership in multiscale organizations for many S modelers.? Curiously, opening our conventions to non-S modelers has never been a priority...perhaps a missed opportunity.? Modelers in the other popular scales seem content to be part of multi-scale organizations.? Yes, there's a national O scale organization, and there are N- and O-specific magazines, but to my knowledge there are no N or HO-specific national associations.? An NMRA S Special Interest Group (SIG) was tried with limited success but that certainly seems like a great avenue to both hook up with other S modelers but also to integrate S into the wider modeling community.
?
Being the close-knit group that we are has been both an asset, and I would contend, a liability over the years.
