Mojo review of AYP
franneilnereau
Hello everyone,
The April issue of Mojo has a full page review of AYP (Jules must be on week-end, if I'm the first to mention), which is rather negative. Only She's a Healer and Goin' Home are rated good. The review, entitled "Pressure Drop" ends with "AYP offers largely platitudes and unconvincing soul rehashes of the Commitments variety. It's not one of his most inspired records". A little bit hard, but generally speaking, I must say I agree with their review, and I'm afraid for Neil that most of the English and French critics will share this opinion. It's been one month since I first listened to this record, and if it's pleasant enough to listen to as a background music while you're busy doing something else, it is definitively a shallow album. The big problems on this album being : - Booker T and the MG's : sorry to say, but they are a great backing band for Otis or Wilson, but not for Neil (except live in 1993) ; their sound is too mellow, lacking passion and surprises, - the songs : apart from She's a healer (the real surprise, what a sound on this one) and Goin' Home (a great song, but it sounds completely out of place here...) - the guitar riffs : my God, he sounds like Gary Moore on several songs (Mr Disappointment for instance) - the voices : Neil's voice is not very well assured on a number of songs and it doesn't always firt very well with the soul/rhythm'n'blues background, and I must repeat (I mentionned it in my first review of AYP) that the background vocals are very often terrible (out of tune, not together, and plain) This is just my opinion, shared with some friends who listened to the album with me, and I was happily surprised to read some very good reviews from many Rusties out there. We're jsut a family with different tastes but the same love for Neil. But sometimes, "qui bene amat, bene castigat". Take care everybody Palomino Nero |

you said it:
apart from She's a healer (the real surprise, what a sound on this one) This is just my opinion. Because this is not my opinion. My opinion is with "you're my girl" and " be with me", "she's a healer" is the worst song of the album, but everyone have a different taste. So do I. Mr. Disappointment is Top of the Bill. Great sound and Neil is a sort of rapper. johan |
OUCH Sheila I feel your pain!!!!
I called a local New York station a few years ago to win few WHO tickets, I
had a plan with another friend and we promised to share the set either of us were bound to win. One set every hour, for 24 hours, starting at 5:00 AM. So I got up early and pre-dialed the phone, sat on line reading mail, listening to the radio and on came Acid Queen, got to LOVE that song.........SO I hit redial and got a live voice, this means if I name the song I am the winner, So I blurt out Pin Ball Wizard.......er NO wait a second i mean Acid Queen, I know it really I do, just the nerves got to me................ Then I hear, gee were sorry, we have to play by the rules. Damn I was mad, but they were right. I wonder who did get that set of seats. Neither my friend or I had any more luck that day, but he did win H. O. R. D. E. tickets to Jone's Beach and gave em to me : ) That was SSSSSSSWWWWWEEEEEETTTTT!!! Have a great weekend all~ Jill <SweetSweetSmile> |

Four Strong Winds
How are y'all? Looks like I've finally got my new cable-speed internet
service along with my new email account up-and-running. Believe me, it's been a hectic week lining it-all up! It all started when I tied to get my old "from" entry Four Strong Winds to show at the new Rust site. I had to start a new email account in order to accomplish it ;>) This-all reminds me of the extreme hassle I went through in order to keep on wearing my very-favorite Matador brand hiking boots. The very last pair that was my size was available, but the steel shank below the anle was digging into my lower ankle-bone. So the shoemaker raised the heel in my left boot so the shank was above the old ankle-bone. Then my left foot was raised 3/8 of an inch so I asked my doctor if he could arrange orthopedic surgery, taking 3/16 of an inch of shin-bone from my right leg and grafting it onto my left, making for better balance in my walking. The doc said that it wasn't worth the bother so I asked him whether he feels that my high blood pressure should interfere with my attending a CSNY concert or not. He said "Hey, you could get run over by a bus crossing the street. What's the big deal?" So I guess I'm "in" for a CSNY 2002 show or two. Just gotta find one that corresponds with my days off and doesn't cost an arm-and-a-leg...... ;>) Tx The cable guy |
Neil's eyes
Somebody wrote me to tell me they thought Neil's eyes looked black or brown
and I told her I saw them, "blue, blue, blue...with maybe some brown or amber sprinkles in them." I also thought Neil's eyes were dark. I was never expecting to see blue eyes. All I know is for a few seconds I felt I was falling in a deep blue pool or ocean and I wrote that on the Santana Cafe, too, the very night that happened and I have never felt that with anybody else in my life when I looked into anybody else's eyes. nj nyg |

04-10-96 B&P Offer
Heath Keane
Ill take as many as I can handle but I ask that you try and make an offer back to the list after you get it.
I love the sound to these shows, it sounds like its at your local bar. The setlist to this 2 disc show is as follows- 04-10-1996, Old Princeton Landing, Princeton-By-The-Sea, California w/ The Echos Country Home Stupid Girl Bite The Bullet Drive Back Look Out For My Love Only Love Can Break Your Heart Barstool Blues Dangerbird Prisoners Of Rock 'n' Roll Homegrown Like A Hurricane The Losing End Baby What You Want Me To Do? Tonight's The Night The acoustic version of LOFML is the same version off of the OPL comp which suffers from a few bouts of feedback but in this set, I think it adds to the small intimate feeling.
