SNC: St Louis area folks
Gary Ferrari
Hey everyone,
I have a single extra Zwan(Billy Corgan's new band) ticket for April 10 at the Galaxy in St. Louis. I'm looking for face value of $20. I was planning on taking the trip but it doesn't look good for me. First one to respond, gets it. Neil content: I'll take the first three b&p's for the 5-22-96 OPL show that I recently downloaded from ny-shn. Gary |
proposed Dead DVDR tree (NNC)
I don't really read a lot on this list, as much as I do like Neil's stuff. I am trying to get this wonderful show out on some other lists. Its the Grateful Dead, 3-22-90, 2 dvdrs, has very good menus etc, excellent video, and the audio is actually the soundboard synced with the video, so it will blow you away.
What I'd like, is for someone to mail me that they have a *pc-based* dvd burner, (and know how to use it, :) ), and will set up a tree or some way to distribute these on rustlist if people are interested. I'm very concerned that folks without dvd burners or a huge list of dvdrs will be able to get in on this too. If you are interested, please mail me. I may ask the list if this person is reliable, please don't be offended. And to make it CLEAR, I'm offering to send ONE set to someone who will see that it gets distributed. This is not any trade/b&p/etc offer. best, bob |

Re: Rust list demographics (nnc)
I solved this question with an unorthodox solution; I just got hid of allWhat are you talking about?! You can have the spines facing outYeah, sure, if you want to see the BACK of the cover... the jewel cases. Yeah, I've thrown away literally thousands of empty cd-cases into the trash-bin, and store my cds at "caselogic"-like cases (100 to 156 cds per case, along with front and back covers). When I decided to adopt that system (when I first moved from my parents house to my own appartment, and needed all the space I could save), I filled 4 or 5 huge cardboxes with about 2000 empty cases. I considered selling them for couple bucks, but the prospect of interacting with folks interested in buying hundreds of empty cd-cases (who those people could be? post-modern artists looking for raw material?) made me not do it, and I just called the garbage men who happily took them away. I organize my cds by style (6 grand divisions: rock/pop, jazz/blues, classical, brasilian music, techno, world music; and a 7th additional "misc." for the unclassifiable stuff) and, within the style, alphabetically/chronologically by artist or group; I always use the first letter of the first word of the name of the artist or group (Neil would go on the "Rock M-N" case, if he did not have his own separate cases, one for the official releases and two others for the boots). Compilations (like "The Greatest Polka Disc Ever!" or "Best of Swahali Music") go separate, also alphabetically arranged. When I first started storing that way, I always skipped one cd-spot for each one I occupied, that way I could double my collection withouth having to reallocate the cds. So far (8 years) it has worked (now I own 3307 cds - and counting), although I did have to add an extra case occasionally, after I started trading. As for the box-sets and cds with digipack or unusual package, I store them separate, the old way, left to right, alphabetically by artist/group regardless of style. It ALL fits in a rather compact wardrobe (6" x 2.5") next to my sound system. Finally, I recently started using a software program (Music Label 2001) to keep track of all info within my discs. This software allows me to include info about all tracks on a given album and all the artists playing/singing in it, who's the composer etc., so using the software's search engine, I can check, say, all the appearances of a song in my collection (example: "Like a Hurricane" gives me 22 results, 3 are cover songs by other artists and the rest are NY performances) or all the albums/tracks a given artist plays (or contributes a composition) besides his own releases, et cetera. It took me a couple months to insert all data (I did it while listening to the many boots I received, so it was not entirely lost time) but now, it's virtually impossible to me not to find a particular disc or song in my collection. Well, I guess that *definitively* proves I'm an anorak guy right? (figuratively speaking of course - I would sweat to death using one of those here in Rio these days). Fabio Yes I'm Passionate |
Re: Celebrity Lookalikes (NNC)
I've been told many times (since I was a teenager, actually, and sometimes
by people in the street I didn't even know) that I look like an "young Mick Jagger" (not too young anymore these days though, now that i'm thirty-something I guess i'm beginning to look like Keith Richards). I don't *think* I look like Mick (or Keith ;-), but so many people have said it that there must be something there... I've also been compared a couple times to the singer from Aerosmith (Whats-his-name Tyler) and to Bon Jovi (!). I don't have any self-pic on-line for you to judge for yourselves, but I have a couple at my pc, if anyone's interested... Fabio Yes I'm Passionate ps: Mick visited Rio de Janeiro the year before I was born (1969)... I wonder... I guess I have to talk to mum (she was pretty wild back then!) |
Rustatistics
Hey, here's a question for the Rust Crew, why is it not possible to access
the 'members' link at the rustlist site? I am subscribed to many other groups at yahoo and I always check the members list, were it's possible to (a) have a general idea of who the members are - their average age, genre, nationality, etc. and (b) check info on a specific member. If the members link was 'open', whe could include more information there and it could work as a 'database', for the "rusted hearts" thing and also for more general research on who the 'Average Rustie' is. (Yeah, I know there is the 'handle's owners' info at hyperrust, but not everyone has a handle or had the trouble to go there and register). Speaking of that, I think it would be very interesting to have a more well-grounded idea of who we rusties are. For instance, *exactly* how many here are from the US, Canada, Europe, other countries? Perhaps it could be checked by the e-mail addresses termination (.com are generally from the US, .uk from Britain, .de germany, .br Brazil, and so on). I know I'm not the only brasilian rustie here - there are half a dozen others, mostly lurking - but is there anyone from other south-american country? Anyone from Asia, Middle East, Africa? How's the age distribution (how many are under 18, in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, more than 60?) Who's the oldest rustie? who's the youngest? How many are digesters, realtimers, web-based? What's the proportion of girls x guys? (obviously, for those statistics to work, all or most rusties should register their basic information somewhere, for the Rust Crew to check them). Another interesting research that the rust crew could do if they have enough time in their hands is to prepare some statistics on the posting frequency, say, since the list moved to yahoogroups about an year ago. You could check how many registered rusties (out of about 2800) effectively have posted here in the last year, and how many are total lurkers (I would guess that only 20% or less rusties are posting on a regular basis, as it seems to be the average at other lists). Also, it would be fun to know who are the 'top 10' or 'top 50' posters; what's the proportion of NNC posts against NC posts; how many posts the average rustie posts each year, etc. We could be in for some surprises, comparing our assumptions againt the real numbers. I'm not sure if that is a viable idea, but if it is, others could suggest additional statistics besides the ones I suggested. Fabio Yes I'm Passionate |
Re; Stupid Girl (NNC)
where has she been anyway. i miss her witty remarks on the list.I've heard Stupid Girl is pregnant. Apparently, it's a new book, we'll certainly hear from him pronto, when/if it hits the bookstands. Him? Yeah man, sorry to burst your bubble, but Stupid Girl is actually a guy (it's a long story...). Apparently he does not use the "Stupid Girl" handle anymore - which is a pity, I think it's a great handle, and funnier in many wicked ways because it's used by a man - and no, for all I know he's not gay, although I wouldn't swear on it ;-) He also posts here (but mostly at HH) as bob_young_the_writer or something like that, among other aliases. He's one of the 'love him or loathe him', politically-incorrect rusties (there are others... but I shall not tell). He wrote and published a very interesting and enjoyable novel called "One of the Guys", I read it after I 'met' him here (I was interested to see how a novel written by 'that funny Stupid Girl guy' could 'sound' like, surprisingly it's written in a very different style then his usual posts - or at least that's my opinion). We've been waiting for his 2nd novel since (the second is always the toughest, so I'm told), but it has not seen the light of day yet. I guess it will be published in July, along with the Archives. I enjoy his ramblings at the list too - some are quite hilarious, although a bit too aggressive for the thin-skinned, when he forgets to take his medication - and I have been trashed by some here, in the past, for defending his posts (or rather his right to post them), when he was banned from the list - twice! - during Lybrand's administration days. I should conceed though that imo he goes a little too 'over the top' sometimes, even for my broad, liberal taste, but hey that's the way s/he is... Fabio Yes I'm Passionate |

Re: DVD to Audio
I am trying to make a CD out the songs on the DVD The Year of the Horse.Any ideas on the simplest way to do this would be greatly appreciated.I never tried it myself, but I'm told that, to do a cd-copy of the audio from a DVD, the easiest way (if you have the equipment) is, instead of using a computer cd-burner, use a cd-recorder connected to your TV. You should change the cd-recorder recording mode to 'analog' (most cd-recorders have this option), that way there is no restrition to copy the audio from the DVD (it works as you were recording the audio from a regular tv program). Obviously, you should use standard 'analog' connections from your DVD to the tv and from the tv to the cd-recorder, instead of the optical or digital connections. Let the DVD roll, and manually change the track number whenever a song ends. Hope it helps! Fabio Yes I'm Passionate |
AYP Live?
I am listening now to the excelent Eurotour 01 comp, and it strikes me how
much I like the live versions of AYP? songs. I think that AYP? could be a next candidate for the series of 'live versions of studio albums' we've seen here recently. I checked my collection, and, with the Eurotour comp, CSNY 02 comp and Rock am Ring concert, we have all album songs but two performed live. I imagine that a more serious collector probably has versions of those missing songs too. So, anyone's for game? Mike? ;-) Here's what I found, but I'm not sure if those are the best live performances of the songs, so if anyone is willing to do it properly, a more complete research should be needed. You're My Girl (02/17/02 Chicago CSNY) Mr Disappointment (? I don't have it) Differently (05/18/02 Rock am Ring) Quit - Dont say you Love Me (07/10/01 Montreaux Eurotour 01) Let's Roll (05/18/02 Rock am Ring, or CSNY 02) Are you Passionate? (05/18/02 Rock am Ring) Going Home (many performances to choose) When I Hold you in my Arms (07/03/01 Stockholm Eurotour 01) Be with You (? I don't have it) Two Old Friends (02/28/02 Hartford CSNY 02) She's a Healer (05/18/02 Rock am Ring) bonus track: Gateway of Love (06/18/01 Ghent Eurotour 01) Fabio Yes I'm Passionate |

The world's top songs - EVER!! (slight nc)
LONDON (Reuters) - The Irish republican rallying cry
"A Nation Once Again" was named on Friday as the world's favorite song ever, after a global poll by the BBC. The ballad performed by the staunchly republican group The Wolfe Tones, was among a minority of Western songs in the list and only narrowly triumphed over Indian patriotic song "Vande Mataram," the BBC said in a statement. (...) The poll of BBC World Service listeners attracted 150,000 votes from 153 countries and revealed the diversity of the world's musical tastes. Among the rest of the top ten was a Bollywood movie song, a love song from Nepal, a Tamil Tiger film song and a pop song from Hollywood singer/actress Cher. "A Nation Once Again" was written by 19th century Anglo-Irish army surgeon Thomas Osbourne Davis to support the fight for an end to British rule. It includes the refrain "And Ireland, long a province, be a nation once again." Many famous names contributed to the voting with Bianca Jagger choosing Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door" rather than anything from ex-husband Mick Jagger's band the Rolling Stones. Former Philippines first lady Imelda Marcos chose Handel's Hallelujah chorus while Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey opted for Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife." The BBC said some artists suffered in the voting stakes because so many of their songs were nominated, splitting the vote. The Beatles had 55 songs nominated and Iranian artist Googoosh had 40. Reggae legend Bob Marley had 29 songs nominated, with "No Woman No Cry" topping the list. Europe's favorite song was "Wind of Change" by the Scorpions, a song many associate with the fall of the Berlin Wall. The United States went for "Girl from Ipanema" by Antonio Carlos Jobim while Latin Americans voted for "Solo le pido a Dios" from Argentine singer Leon Geico. Swahili classic "Malaika" was Africa's number one while Australians and New Zealanders voted for both Crowded House's "Don't Dream it's Over" and "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC. The final top ten list is: 1. A Nation Once Again -- The Wolfe Tones. 2. Vande Mataram -- various artists. 3. Dil Dil Pakistan -- Vital Signs. 4. Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu -- Ilayaraja. 5. Poovum Nadakkuthu Pinchum Nadakkuthu -- Thirumala Chandran 6. Ana wa Laila -- Kazem El Saher. 7. Reetu Haruma Timi -- Arun Thapa. 8. Believe -- Cher. 9. Chaiyya Chaiyya -- A R Rahman. 10. Bohemian Rhapsody -- Queen. " _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Now for the slight neil content: does anyone know if any NY song made BBC pool's top 100, or top 1000, or...? Fabio Yes I'm Passionate |

a group of people very small to be of any significance. Any of us could easy compile a list of 100 (1000?) "how could they forget to include (yada yada)" songs (Neil's and many other artists') that didn't make the "top 1000". Anyway, here are the Neil songs included and their position in the "top 1000" chart: 17 The Needle & Damage Done 65 Southern Man 105 Rockin' in the Free World 201 Cinnamon Girl 226 Mansion on The Hill 237 Ohio 281 Old Man 304 Long May You Run 368 Hey Hey 478 Alabama 514 Crime in The City 585 The Loner 597 Walk On 659 Heart of Gold 670 Cortez the Killer 766 Sugar Mountain 871 Downtown 942 Don't Let it Bring You Down 18 in 1000... Then Neil songs correspond to 1.8 % of the best 1000 rock songs ever written? Yeah, right... By the way, where's "Like a Hurricane" and "Cowgirl in the Sand"? And how come the only #1 Neil song ever, HoG, is almost a 100 positions below a very little known song (Walk On) from an album that is not even available? Go figure... Xmas-related songs from rock artists
I'm not refering to covers of the traditional pop songs like 'white
christmas' et al, but original-penned rock songs that make direct or indirect reference to Christmas. Some tunes come to mind: Tom Waits - Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis Joni Mitchell - The River Neil Young - The Star of Bethlehem Toby Keith - Christmas Rock Nerf Herder - I've Got a Boner for Christmas If we get a dozen more of so like these, it could make a very different christmas compilation to give to your friends.
