Re: Top 1000 Classic Rock Songs
Imho those lists are not to be taken seriously, they reflect the opinion of a group of people very small to be of any significance. Any of us could easy compile a list of 100 (1000?) "how could they forget to include (yada yada)" songs (Neil's and many other artists') that didn't make the "top 1000".
Anyway, here are the Neil songs included and their position in the "top 1000" chart:
17 The Needle & Damage Done 65 Southern Man 105 Rockin' in the Free World 201 Cinnamon Girl 226 Mansion on The Hill 237 Ohio 281 Old Man 304 Long May You Run 368 Hey Hey 478 Alabama 514 Crime in The City 585 The Loner 597 Walk On 659 Heart of Gold 670 Cortez the Killer 766 Sugar Mountain 871 Downtown 942 Don't Let it Bring You Down
18 in 1000... Then Neil songs correspond to 1.8 % of the best 1000 rock songs ever written? Yeah, right... By the way, where's "Like a Hurricane" and "Cowgirl in the Sand"? And how come the only #1 Neil song ever, HoG, is almost a 100 positions below a very little known song (Walk On) from an album that is not even available? Go figure...

Here's a link I found for a local radio station. It's not surprising what made #1. But its interesting Neil Content. I'm sure everyone on this list wouldn't list what they had under Neil's name(well at least one). By the way what came in at #605? Also, how do these lists get put together? Anyone know?
For all those who dont scan the list Hey, Hey, although a good song, made the list in 300's while Cortez made the list in the 600's. Somewhat of a shock I'd say. The again, to each his/her own.

Xmas-related songs from rock artists
I'm not refering to covers of the traditional pop songs like 'white christmas' et al, but original-penned rock songs that make direct or indirect reference to Christmas. Some tunes come to mind:
Tom Waits - Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis Joni Mitchell - The River Neil Young - The Star of Bethlehem Toby Keith - Christmas Rock Nerf Herder - I've Got a Boner for Christmas
If we get a dozen more of so like these, it could make a very different christmas compilation to give to your friends.
Anyone?

Re: The Oracle of Bacon links Neil to:
Bob Young says: Note that when searching Neil, you have to type in "Neil (I) Young," as the database contains a minor performer with the same name. Hmm, innaresting. Who's that second Neil Young guy? Does anyone knows anything about him? Anyway, He's easily linked to *our* Neil Young: Neil (II) Young was in Island of Dr. Moreau, The (1996) with Ron Perlman Ron Perlman was in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) with Whoopi Goldberg Whoopi Goldberg was in America: A Tribute to Heroes (2001) (TV) with Neil (I) Young Fabio Yes I'm Passionate

BURNERLESS VCD OFFER[Europe] - Oakland
Hi, thanks to Bjarte Heide, I have the Oakland 1999/03/20 VCD on 2 discs.
I've seen a few offerings to the list, but none for those burnerless ones. So, here's your chance to grab this VCD for the cost of a couple of discs and a stamp. I'll take at least 5, but whenever I've said this in the past, I've found it pretty difficult to say no.
Digsters needn't worry, this offer will be for a while.
Take care

Does anyone have any good quality early Joni Mitchell shows to trade? I'd appreciate it.
Scott Leavin' the Top Forty Behind If there are any Joni live performances, I'd also be interested. I remember seeing her here in San Antonio in the early 70's with Tom Scott and the LA Express coming off and on with her...I prefer her solo, big time....well, San Antonio, for me never had a deep musical consciousness...and I always felt we were a crude bunch, musically speaking, for the finer music scenes, 'you know? But when Joni came on, man, she blew the crowd away into sheer silence. I had never experienced anything like that. The press was awestruck. Even the top 40 radio stations were saying that it was an unbelievable concert where one would be able to hear a pin drop...and I am speaking in all seriousness...the savage beast of San Antonio was put at utter ease and release...even the most high strung rowdy hard-core football/baseball fans I have known or hard core whatever can be brought into "taming the tiger...nice kitty, kitty" levels of comfort with Joni's music....her lyrics are something else...those with "short attention spans" or those who are mentally lazy to study what she feels won't get it ...ever since I heard Joni's song sung by Judy Collins back in 1968, I needed to find out who she was and I was just 11 years old and I found out who Joni was and I have been a faithful Joni fan ever since then.

Well my computer has been down for a week or so, so I don't know what the recent talks have been, but did anyone go to the Gabriel show in Michigan at The Palace? Blind Boys were great and so was Gabriel, but I was shocked at the crowd. The Palace may have been half filled. I thought it would be close to a sellout. I am wondering what the attendance has been for the rest the tour. Respond off list if you care to. Tom Petty tonight.

Not necessarily ... my mom is Canadian and she married my American dad over thirty years ago and she has lived in the United States for longer than that. She has decided to remain a Canadian ... she does not even
have dual citizenship. She is a proud Canuck and more specifically a proud Newfie. Mike Comatose but walking still
Neil probably has dual citizenship. because of his marriage.
It doesn't come automatically. After three years of permanent residency through the marriage (as a green card holder), the "alien" has to apply for citizenship and pass the citizenship test (and be legally sworn in).
If the green card wasn't obtained through family relationship, the period is five years of permanent residency before the "alien" can apply.
your mom *could* take US citizenship, *and* retain her Canadian citizenship - neither govt forces you to choose only one (unlike some countries - India, for example - that do)
However, the US govt would remove dad's US citizenship if dad took another citizenship that he did not gain by birth/parentage, (ie: if he moved to Canada & took Canadian citizenship).
BTW.. did you know that mom can be deported if she changes address in the US and doesn't notify the INS within six days of moving? It was 30 days, until 1998. Scary!!! This applies to ALL non-citizens, regardless of length of residency.
My source for all this info is my experience as a green card holder in the US, and applying for US citizenship, before changing direction and becoming a Landed Immigrant in Canada, then becoming a citizen of Canada, and all the associated research of the laws during these legal processes.
And, yes, I also retain my birth citizenship, which is British :)

Neil probably has dual citizenship. because of his marriage. Point taken. The question is . . . can Neil vote legally in U.S.
elections? Perhaps it depends if he ever voted in a Canadian election. He may not have since he moved to the States when he was just a young adult. Even if you're a dual citizen I don't believe you can vote in both countries. It's either one or the other. (But then maybe I'm misinformed about this.)
It doesn't come automatically. After three years of permanent residency through the marriage (as a green card holder), the "alien" has to apply for citizenship and pass the citizenship test (and be legally sworn in). I always thought Neil was a little different but I didn't know he was an alien. ;-)
If the green card wasn't obtained through family relationship, the period is five years of permanent residency before the "alien" can apply. Neil must have obtained his green card way before he was married to Pegi. So he's probably well past the point when he was entitled to apply for U.S. citizenship.

However, the US govt would remove dad's US citizenship if dad took another citizenship that he did not gain by birth/parentage, (ie: if he moved to Canada & took Canadian citizenship). I'm confused here. You state that if U.S. dad decided to move to Canada with Canadian mom and take out Canadian citizenship then he would have his U.S. citizenship taken away. How is that different from Canadian mom moving to the States with her U.S. husband and taking out U.S. citizenship? Isn't that the same situation but reversed? Both spouses would be taking out citizenship of a country they weren't born in originally or through parentage.
My source for all this info is my experience as a green card holder in the US, and applying for US citizenship, before changing direction and becoming a Landed Immigrant in Canada, then becoming a citizen of Canada, and all the associated research of the laws during these legal processes.

Hey all,
I was listening to NPR today in my truck, and they did a little segment on Ben Folds, talking about how he is interacting with the audience at his solo piano shows.
Ben mentioned that Neil had made a big impression on him when they did several shows together on the HORDE 97 tour. Ben said he admired the way Neil could take a 15,000 seat venue and make it seem like a living room.
Yeah.

I've done some vinyl to cd-r transfers and have been quite pleased with the results for the most part, although if you start out with a lousy vinyl mix to begin with, then that's basically what you're also going to end up with on the cd-r you transfer it to. One thing that I have been able to do on some vinyl recordings with a "low" sounding mix, (mostly older recordings), is to bump the record levels up just a bit on the transfer to cd-r, which usually seems to slightly improve the sound quality of the original vinyl recording, at least to my ears it does. Thankfully, I've also kept most of my old vinyl records in near-mint condition over the years, so I get mostly smooth and "pop" free recordings as well.

Wow! I can't believe how easily I was able to find an old campspot we used to use back in the late 60's. It's hiden completely by trees in a ravine and it has a nice cold creek running right through it, plus you can't be seen at all from the road which goes right past it. I'm sure that the local Kootenai Indians would've used this spot as a camp at the turn of the century. I wish I found it this easy to find the Saratoga Springs Campground. I've got the mapquest directions but they don't seem to make much sense. Oh well, I'll handwrite them out for tomorrow ot Saturday a.m. just in case. One way or t'other we'll hunt fer the campground and probably find it. If someone's able, could you email me directions to get from Hwy 101, SF Int'l Airport to Saratoga Springs Campground? Tx. Gina and I will leave Trail tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. I gave the neighbour heck the other day 'cause his dog was usin' my lawn as a pet latrine. We almost came to blows and he said "If yer gonna hit me, Saddle Boy, make it yer best shot 'cause it'll be yer last stand. Yeah, it'll be yer last stand." I replied "I'm sittin', no Bull!" Yeah, if someone could direct my own self to the IRF campground via hwy 101 from the SF Int'l Airport, maybe email me with directions, I oghtta be able to take care o' drawin' myself a map tomorrah a.m. I often wish I still was with my Native girlfriend from Fort St. James, B.C. She could find any place you mentioned, plus find a shortcut to it too. Well, time to hit the hay, Folks.
