Power on/off button 5
I needed an easy power ON/OFF button on my RPi4B and came across this approach at https://www.stderr.nl/Blog/Hardware/RaspberryPi/PowerButton.html which worked great. It does the equivalent of "shutdown" command. Read the link for additional info before implementing. Simply add the line below to the /boot/config.txt and add a push button between gpio_pin 3 and ground. dtoverlay=gpio-shutdown,gpio_pin=3

Raspberry Pi-400 - Hermes Lite 2 10
New member of this group and old OM planning to move to SDR I'm thinking to a Raspberry Pi-400 with a 13.3" HDMI LCD IPS 1920x1080 tactile screen to work a Hermes Lite 2 transceiver. I'm totally new to Raspberry with a good experience of Debian. Is it a good and workable idea? I would use mainly Quisk, JS8Call, WSJTX and fldigi and guess I should load Linux Debian softwares. Can this softwares be easily loaded in the Pi-400? With what amount of memory for the micro-SD card? 73 - Pierre - FK8IH

Kenwood VM-71A/K Crossband Question 8
I have question for you. If you are "I'm setting it to simplex UHF w/CTCSS on one channel and UHF simplex w/o CTCSS on the other." how is that "cross-band" when they are the same band? Otherwise, look at the rules and you will find that cross-banding doesn't fit very well. Also not sure what this has to do with Raspberry Pi-4. Mick - W7CAT

Questions about PiGate 2
Hi Mark Griffith. I have been running my PiGate 24/7 for several days, as a type of "burn-in" test. I just discovered that when my PiGate polls, it retrieves all traffic that has been sent to my Winlink address, NV2Z@.... My questions are as follows: 1) How do I retrieve the messages that PiGate is holding for NV2Z? 2) How do I prevent PiGate from retrieving my Winlink traffic? The truth is in the starlight. PiGate Primary Winlink User - No dashes in call sign allowed? 4
Yesterday at a workshop we had working with PiGates and helping folks get set up, we stumbled across two things: If we enter a valid Winlink.org call sign such a XX2X-4, the PiGate will not trigger a Signalink The call sign cannot be changed unless we start from scratch with a fresh image. Let me elaborate on each point. We started by setting up PiGate to use a SignaLink USB. We set the call sign in /root/direwolf.conf, we then copied /root/get_tnc_params.sh.DW to /root/get_tnc_params.sh as indicated in the documentation. We then set about the admin interface and set the call sign (XX2X-4), date/time, location, set default RMS station, etc. Reboot for good measure and ... nothing. Polling would not trigger the SignaLink. Contrast that with doing the exact same procedure with another fresh image and leaving off the -4 from the call sign and everything worked as expected. The XX2X-4 call sign is registered with Winlink.org and works fine -in- Winlink on Windows (RMS Express). But it does not work with the PiGate. My guess is there is some Sed or Awk magic happening that doesn't like the "-4" in the call sign on first setup. Second point. Although there is a method to change the call sign, it doesn't work for use of the base PiGate functionality. Let me explain. We initially set-up the system with the XX2X-4 call and password. When it didn't appear to work, we removed the -4, and it still didn't work. We then tried an alternate known-good call sign and that didn't work. We built a new fresh image that worked using my call sign. We then attempted to change it to another, and again, it would not work. Changing it -back- to mine then again made everything work. We would sincerely like to understand why using a -4 in the call sign does not work, and why we can't easily change the base call used in the PiGate. Thank you, Asa Jay

PiGate RMS documents 3
Hi Mark. I recently built a PiGate using Direwolf and a SignaLink and I am quite happy with it. I would like to build a PiGate RMS. I downloaded the PiGate RMS image from your google drive. The download went flawlessly. The error message that you mentioned is not a hindrance. I am patiently waiting for the PiGate RMS documentaion to be available for downloading. Thank you for your time and programming, etc. that produced such a wonderful product. I hope that you have a great day! The truth is in the starlight. PiGate on Raspberry Pi 4 8
I received my Raspberry Pi 4 Model B a week or so back but have not had time to fire it up. It has a copyright date of 2018 on the PCB Booting PiGate v1.5 does NOT work. Booting PiGate v2.2 DOES work. I know Mark had trouble with later PiGates he purchased in 2021 I think it was. I am wondering if this Pi 4 is a model prior to those that are not working for him. I suspect it may be due to the copyright date being 2018. Mark, do you still have the Pi 4 that did not work with your latest PiGate image? Does it have a different copyright date on the PCB? Maybe there is some other way to distinguish them, but I only have this one that is working. Asa Jay

Allstar Node Progress 3
I've been building my first Allstar node using an RPi4B, CM-108 fob, and a BF-888 (clone) so I thought I'd post a picture of where I'm at. Since this is my first attempt, I literally built it on a breadboard so I have easy access. Still having trouble getting a single 5V supply to power both the Pi and the HT. When I tried using the 5V 3A convertor shown I kept getting "Low Voltage" warnings from the Pi. Right now I'm dropping the 5.1V converter output using two diodes for the HT and using an "official" Pi 5.1V power module. I looked at using buck converters but I didn't like what i read about some dangerous things with the output voltage if the input happens to drop below spec. My next step is install Hamvoip. Wish me luck...73 - Scott/KK6DZ

PiGate with Signalink or DRA 12
I have successfully used PiGate v2.2 to run with a TNC-Pi hat and attached through my FT-897. I am now moving on to testing with a SignaLink. Simply plugging it in and rebooting does not make it work. The messages log shows it is detected but the OS is not assigning it a device entry, like ttyUSB2 The error message says the device was not an MTP device, when it executed the mtp-probe. I get the same result when trying a DRA sound card. I thought I read somewhere that the later PiGate versions should work with a SignaLink. Now I’m not sure I read that. If PiGate v2.2 is compatible with SignaLink, how do I set it up if the OS won’t give it a device in /dev? It would seem an update to mtp-probe is needed. Thoughts? Asa Jay W7TSC

Dual hotspot case 2
Hi all! I just wanted to share some photo's of my latest project. I have installed two Pi 3b's in a single case to run both DMR and Dstar. It's almost finished but, I still have a few things to add to it yet. Everything in the photo's was purchased off of eBay except for the front and rear panels. I had to make those by hand. Anyway, enjoy and let me know if you have some ideas for improvements or anything else. 73' de W2LPC.

Monitor setup 10
Greetings, I'm sure that the problem is the user (me) and not the RPI4. I just got a new RPI4 4GB and hooked it up to my 7-inch HDMI display and could get nothing but a black screen. I did the mod where you go in the micro SD card and go into the Config.txt file and changed the HDMI Mode to 16 and that did not work. Here is the link to the actual monitor that I am attempting to use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XQJVXHL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Out of curiosity, I unplugged the HDMI cable from the monitor and plugged it into my TV and it works great. I must have a setting wrong or something, if you know what I am doing wrong please help me. Thank you

Finding /dev/serial/by-id 4
I have created this new subject as a split off from the original subject "Setup static IP address". Apparently when I created a new pi os image I lost the "by-id". I searched around and finally found a fix. Not being linux.debian user I did not know how to merge so I ended up doing a cut and paste to the following file: /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-serial.rules which resolved my problem, however, I understand that if there is another update to the os this file gets overwritten unless the update has implemented this patch. Setup static IP address 16
I have tried unsuccessfully to setup a static ip address for the pi 400 modifying dhcpcd.conf. I am successful in updating the conf file, however, I feel like the system is not really looking at this file. In fact I turned off the pi last night and when I powered on it picked up a new dhcp address. Any thoughts. Don - kx9q

Misc RPi4B & CM108 Questions 3
Still working on my Allstar node using a RPi4B, CM108 audio fob and BF-888S. Assume I'm running HamVoip. I have a couple more questions for the group. 1) Does CM108 Pin 48 (VOLDN) require an active low or high from the Baofeng COS? I measure a 0V to 2.4V transition when the Baofeng receives, which implies a normally LOW condition at Pin 48 with a HIGH signal when COS is active. 2) Does CM108 pin 13 (GPIO3) go HIGH when audio ready to go to the Baofeng PTT? 3) Most mod approaches seem to tap the Baofeng received audio from the top of the volume pot and then feed the CM108 Pin 27 (MICIN) through a 10K resistor or a pot. Why not just use the volume control wiper output to feed CM108 Pin 27 and have a variable input to Pin 27? 4) Does HamVoip provide for gracefull shutdown using a SPST switch? How about the RPi4B while not runninh HamVoip - is there a simple way to shut it down without changing any software? 5) Can I run HamVoip on the Pi without an Audio fob or radio to test the HamVoip operation? It seems like I should be able to. Thanks. Scott Eckert/KK6DZ

Slighly OT - Raspberry Pi as a scanner
Anyone built a Pi to use as a scanner? I was thinking of one as a standalone setup with a screen to work as a scanner maybe with options like Close Call Waterfall Memories for favourite channels etc? Open to advice/suggestions. Cheers John

Newbie Question on CM108 Audio Fob for Allstar Node 13
I am new to the RPi world and have what's probably a "dumb" question. I am not a software guy so please go easy on me. My ultimate goal is to build an Allstar link using a BF-888S and CM108 audio fob. I have a RPi4B now running and it seems to be working fine. I have a CM108 audio fob which when inserted into the Pi USB port it doesn't seem to be recognized (it works OK in my PC). No mods have been made yet to the fob as I just wanted to see if it worked in the Pi. My question is do I somehow need to disable the on-board Pi audio for it to see the inserted audio fob? if so, how do I do that? Thanks - 73 - Scott/KK6DZ

PiGate on Raspberry Pi 4? 5
Hi all, Is PiGate v2.2 compatible with current Pi 4 hardware? I read a posting from Mark that earlier version of Pi 4 were working, but a more recent Pi 4 did not. That was at the beginning of 2021. However, he did not specify the version that did not work and I could not find any information that a new build had been made to fix the problem. We have some folks in our ARES - ACS group interested in building a few PiGates but are shy to buy the Pi until we know more and can get v2.2 working. Thank you, Asa Jay W7TSC - Spokane County ARES - ACS Emergency Coordinator Sent via radio waves

PiGate v2.2 and GPS 8
I’m running a fresh install of PiGate v2.2 on a Pi 3 model B v1.2. I have attached a G-Mouse GPS via USB. The messages log shows the device attaching to ttyACM0. cat /dev/ttyACM0 shows NMEA data streams and what looks like a position fix (though maybe not). The PiGate admin “Set PiGate Location” does not show coordinates even after refreshing. V2.1 docs indicate PiGate is looking for GPS on ttyUSB0, which this isn’t on. I also note the gpsd service is not running and it has been masked. Unmasking it still does not allow it to start. Now I’m at a standstill on using GPS until I understand how it’s been set up to work. Why is the gpsd service masked? Why won’t it start on detection of the USB GPS device? (Yes, it was plugged in prior to powering the Pi). How do I tell PiGate to look at a different port for GPS detection? Thank you, Asa Jay W7TSC
