Hello All,
I have being trying to get WSJT-X to work on my RPi4B (4GB). I am using Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. The rig is a QRP Labs QDX. Everything is 'ok' with Windows but I could really be a ton happier using the Pi or maybe an Inovato Quadra (I am waiting for one to arrive). The Pi is my favourite choice. Using WSJT-X via a plain USB soundcard (audio from a truSDX) everything is (kind of) ok but the QDX/Pi combo is my #1 choice. Does anyone have any ideas? I would love to climb a hill or even do a POTA thing. I am ok at following instructions.

Hello Tryg,
It's generally recommended to use Raspberry Pi OS on Raspberry Pi
hardware but I imagine that Ubuntu should work.? Are you having a
specific issue?

Maybe, based on your 'non-US' location, you may need to modify the? raspi-config? lcalization section, substituting the appropriate information for? EN_US.UTF-8 UTF-8

Hello all, I have managed to get the Pi to play ball. The next thing is to get it to work headless and control via a tablet or 'maybe' a Chromebook. Everything is grand but I have not yet done any QSO's. I am based in Ireland so I expect that my locale settings will have to be modified, nonetheless, I am doing fine copying at the moment. I will do, or at least try to do, a bit of WSPR in the morning. I was aware of HamPi but I have never managed to get it to install. I am certain that it is my fault but for the moment I am happy and a step closer to the 'shack in a bag'. Thanks very much to everyone that helped and especially to Jerry K4OAM.

Tryg, I use KM4ACK's "build-a-pi" to setup my Raspberry Pi which has WSJT-X as part of the packages you can install. ?I'm looking to do a similar setup as you (QDX and Pi for operation) but am waiting on the QDX to get delivered before I can test it out. ?has the image build and install instructions /g/KM4ACK-Pi/?is the related discussion group I've got an old iPad that I use for the monitor/keyboard via VNC using the included Hotspot feature. Usually that's enough for me to do FT8 in the field, but I also have a folding bluetooth keyboard/trackpad that I can use if I expect to be doing more typing (e.g., JS8Call). Also a fan of KM4ACK project. Stays updated versions without waiting for a release distribution. Also sets up a wifi hotspot for headless use

I have managed to get the Pi happening as I have already mentioned. IF possible, I understand that VNC server is built into the flavour that I am running - Bullseye with Jerry's mods. I would prefer to use a tablet to control the Pi headless. I will try other distros in the future but for the moment the set-up I have is working in the shack. It will be possible to uploadspots using the phone as a hotspot but it is communicating with the Pi independent of the home network. If ANYONE can help out that would be great. TIA.

Here's a site that will help.? VNC is on your Pi, assuming you are using the Raspbian OS.? It's available to be installed on a PI with other OS but I am not familiar with that procedure.
It will run fine on the Apple equipment.? I have had success on a Chromebook, but it's not quite as intuitive as Apple.

If you haven't alreadt done so, from a terminal session:
sudo raspi-config
Go the #3 [Interface options] then to 'I3' [Enable graphical remote acces using RealVNC]
This will enable the RealVNC server on your RaspBerry Pi.
Then, on your tablet, go to the Play Store and install RealVNC viewer .
Once installed, execute it, and poit to the ipv4 address of your RasPi.
Enter your pi password, and away you go.
If you need to change the viewer's screen resolution edit the Pi's? /boot/config.txt file according to the instuctions in this link:

I was convinced that I could run Linux on it but dev mode has been a disaster. Re: the Pi, I managed to run the commands that I got from Jerry and then - just once - managed to 'talk' to the Pi from the Android device.
I have ordered another couple of SD cards (proper ones) to have a backup or two available. I would really love to start it using my Android tablet (with the rig set-up), and then have it all run headless after that. Most importantly - I WANT/NEED TO BE INDEPENDENT OF MY HOME NETWORK. The whole aim is to away's out and do it all with b*gg*r all! All with a battery. Forgive my rhetoric but I am a bit old and that is becoming cumbersome. Thanks yet again.

I routinely use my Pi zero 2W both at home and remote to run digital modes on my QRP rig, and connect wirelessly to my phone, Android (Kindle) tablet, or a regular PC for control using VNC. I am running Buster and use Fldigi and WSJT-X. Using the Build-a-Pi (BAP) scripts from KC4ACK it is easy to set up the Pi to connect to a known network if it is in range, or automatically become a hotspot when not. However, the tablet or other device usually needs to be told to connect to the Pi since it is not an internet-enabled connection as compared to other WiFi networks. I just select the Pi from the WiFi menu. Also, I use an inexpensive GPS dongle to get accurate time and to tell me the current grid square, which shows up on the Pi main page with a program called Conky...also provided for in the BAP options. My entire rig, antenna, battery, and digi interface fits in a small cloth briefcase, so pretty much as you are trying to achieve.

Hi All!
I ran into some difficulties with VNC. I will try to resolve things in the morning. IF I can get a 'regular' network established with the Android tablet and perhaps the Chromebook too then things will be a bit better. The best thing that happened today was a couple of SD cards arrived. Reliability is key. @Vic, I am happy for any further suggestions. I have the RPi4B and a Pi Zero W (V1.0) IF the KM4ACK can work on that it would be thrilling. A Pi Zero 2 W is unobtainium - at least for me.
For the moment I am going to persist with the RPi4B for the moment, although I am very keen on the idea of Build a Pi. @Jerry, I am getting things sorted out with VNC. I must get a bit of sleep now. My mind is fizzing with radio ideas.
I will report back on my progress over the weekend. I desire victory.

I initially made my portable digi-connection with a RPi-zero, and it worked, but barely. I could not run Fldigi, but found another PSK program that would work, and while WSJT-X ran, the decode time for FT8 was typically longer than the pause between transmissions and so I had a lot of repeats to get the contact made, but it worked. I picked up an RPi zero 2 as soon as they came out and that made a huge difference. I could run Fldigi and FT-8 pretty seamlessly. I did have to get a different case for the Pi as the plastic case retained heat and would shut the Pi off, but with the Flirc case, no such problems. If the size isn't too much of an issue, stick with the Pi4, but I really enjoy the portability of the zero setup and everything runs off a single Li-ion battery and lasts all day. Gentlefolk, I have managed to get VNC to talk to the Pi. It would be good to know if this is something I can do 'in the field' but also to go 'headless' - from the off. I am clued in about KC4ACK's build and would like to try it also. I don't like to screw up to the point where I am still up at some bonkers time of the night trying to set this all up. I am very grateful for the help I am getting. Really at this point I see the major challenges as...
- Can I do all of my operation in the field with the Pi? (sort of dumb question but...)
- Can I run the Pi headless at boot and do everything from my Android tablet?
- Can this all be achieved well away from a network or internet connection?
I suppose that those are the main issues at the moment. @Vic, thanks very much for the article. Is it ok with you to share it over on the GQRP group? I got very excited when I saw the mention of the uBITX. I have a V 3.0 that is dated March 2018. The 'building' is going to be a Winter project. I really would like to get that rig going though baby steps for the moment. Is it possible to use a screen like the one on your uBITX in the picture? It looks great. If it isn't,well not to worry. Thanks, Tryg. Yes, you can run this setup in the field away from any WiFi network or phone connection and run headless, connecting to an Android tablet. It helps to be using an UPS dongle to get accurate time information, but you can sometimes get close using an accurate watch. The software I am using on my uBitX has a built-in WSPR mode that doesn't need any external computer and I have used that to test portable antennas just setting my watch by WWV and watching the second hand to initiate the mode, then getting reception reports later. My rig is the V4, but a version the same software can run on any of the uBitX radios with a variety of displays including the original 2-line LCD. On a recent vacation at the beach I used mine with a compact 40m EFHW antenna and operating on very limited times before or after family was in bed I worked 28 countries, mostly in digital modes, from Australia to Greece during the week.?
