Hello all,
I believe that the micro SD card reader on my RPI4 is not working. I put in a brand new SanDisk micro SD card with Raspberry Pi OC on it and it never boots up, just says No Signal on the screen. I can put the same micro SD card in an original pi and it will boot up just fine.?
I have been told to get an SSD system on my RPI4 and it will work just fine. The SSD system boots from a USB.?
I have been looking at how to boot from a USB stick with the RPI 4 without using an SD card. Every place that I have found has you booting from an SD card and once the RPI is operating you change the booting to boot from a USB instead of an SD card. The problem that I am having is that if you need an SD card to tell the RPI to boot from the USB, but if you can't boot with the SD card how can you change it to boot from the USB?
I know on Windows computers you can repeatedly press one of the F buttons and you can get it to boot from a thumb drive. I would like to get my RPI operating somehow to make sure that it works before I invest money into getting a SSD setup.?
Does anyone know how I can boot an RPI4 from a thumb drive to make sure that it works and to set it up to boot from a USB?

Have you actually tried it? Assuming a recent Pi4 or Pi400, you just plug in the USB thumb drive or SSD and it just works. There's nothing to do to tell it to boot from USB. To build on what Nigel said, did you download and
put this brand new Raspberry Pi OS SD image on the SD card?? There
are at least two versions of the Rpi4 which require newer images
to boot.?? It's possible that your Rpi4's firmware is corrupt so
there are guides on how to restore that:

did you download and put this brand new Raspberry Pi OS SD image on the SD card? Yes I did
I used the Raspberry Pi Imager v1.7.3 and the os I used is Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit) released 2022-9-22

How did you flash the image to the SD card?? What image did you use?
You can flash the image to an SSD/USB drive the same way, and just plug it into the Pi4 and it boots from it.
Do you ever get anything on the display?? Do either of the LED's light?

What do the red and green LED's do?
Do you get anything at all on the monitor when you connect power?? Also, are you using the micro HDMI connector next to the power connector?? That is the primary display.? And the monitor has to be powered on before you power on the pi

The red and green LED';s flash for a few seconds when it starts up. Then the green LED goes out and the red LED stays on. I am using the correct HDMI connector. The monitor is my television and it is on before power up. The TV screen just says "No Signal" I can unplug this pi and use the same SD card on an older RPI and it boots up just fine with the tv set as the monitor. I did this because I want to make sure that I have the TV set right and it is correctly set up.?

There can be several reasons why you aren't seeing a display on a
TV .? I recommend to read this to see some of the troubleshooting

I'm not getting any progress. When I try to boot from a USB I get nothing but a red LED and the fan running.?
Could someone else please try this with their RPI4??
Every place I look for instructions requires you to do certain upgrades in the Terminal to get the RPI to boot from a USB.?
I also read that for the older RPI4 you have to go into the Terminal to activate this option but for the newer ones this is already been set up.??

I had the same issue myself. 2.5 amp supplies are sometimes not enough.?
What supply are you using?
Easily could be a low voltage or underrated power supply.?
This is a known issue with late model Pi 4’s.?

This RPI4 has worked with this TV since 2020 with no problem it just had a low voltage warning.?
I was planning on getting a new 4 amp RPI power supply when I order the stuff for SSD.?
My funds are very limited and regardless of what people say these Raspberry Pi's are not just $35. I don't want to get into a routine of I have to buy this and it will work, now I should by this and it will work, this new product you have to buy and it will then work.
I keep trying this and that and nothing works.??

I get your frustration but the truth is that the
Raspberry Pi platforms have been evolving over the years.? In the
early days of USB booting, people used to have to program a
special bit to enable USB and later PXE network booting.? Those
features have been slowly getting enabled by DEFAULT in new boards
if a SD card wasn't available on specific platforms.??
Fortunately, if you have older versions of various Rpi boards, you
usually *can* update them to also support these abilities.? Here

Btw, depending on the age of your Raspberry Pi 4, it might have
the new bootloader diagnostics as well (SD card must be REMOVED):

Oh.. that is news to me and maybe something has failed.? Since you
were already seeing low voltage warnings. I would start with
replacing the P/S.? I've personally seen Rpi power supplies fail
and several SD cards fail.? I've also had one Rpi outright just
DIE after a few years (I suspect a power spike or an ESD event
killed it).? It's hard to expect a lot with long lifetimes from a
very inexpensive little computer.

If you had a low voltage warning, your power supply was going. You need a good power supply first

I think that I have made some progress.
I hooked it to a very crappy HDMI monitor that I got with this RP. Anyway, I powered it up with no SD card and no USB thumb drive. I think that I am in the bootloader diagnostics. It is just a green screen that has some info on the board and every 20 seconds it repeats:
Failed to open device:? 'sdcard'?
root HUB port 1 init
USB MSD times out after 20 seconds.?
I think that this is progress but I know not what to do now.?

Therefore you need to update the boot code. Unfortunately can't tell you how to do it. I've got a Pi400 and it has alwats booted from either a thumb drive of a USB SSD. In either case, program it with Etcher, dd, or Pi Imager.

Do you see that diagnostic screen on your TV?? If not, maybe it's a
matter of power draw as different HDMI devices can create different
power loading issues.??
If you insert your SD card into your rpi4 when connected to that
little HDMI display, do you see anything or does the display remain
black?? If it remains black, can you try imaging any other SD cards
just to rule out a bad SD card?
Have you tried using the Raspberry Pi imager to write a Raspberry Pi
OS image to a USB thumbdrive / ssd /etc and then tried booting off
that?? I would recommend to FIRST try booting off the USB2.0 ports
just to see if that works.
I would also recommend to see if you can try any other USB-C power
supplies.? Maybe one from a more recent generation laptop, etc.? You
could try a USB-C cell phone charger brick but you really want to
find one that supports at least 5.0volts at 3.0amps or better.
