Re: PiGate v2.2 and GPS

For what it¡¯s worth, I just looked up the specs on this GPS module:

Support DGPS [WAAS, EGNOS and MSAS]

With that in mind, something probably needs to be set up differently. ?Or I need to bite the bullet and get a different one.

PiGate v2.2 and GPS

I¡¯m running a fresh install of PiGate v2.2 on a Pi 3 model B v1.2.

I have attached a G-Mouse GPS via USB.

The messages log shows the device attaching to ttyACM0.
cat /dev/ttyACM0 shows NMEA data streams and what looks like a position fix (though maybe not).

The PiGate admin ¡°Set PiGate Location¡± does not show coordinates even after refreshing. ?V2.1 docs indicate PiGate is looking for GPS on ttyUSB0, which this isn¡¯t on. ?I also note the gpsd service is not running and it has been masked. ?Unmasking it still does not allow it to start.

Now I¡¯m at a standstill on using GPS until I understand how it¡¯s been set up to work.
Why is the gpsd service masked?
Why won¡¯t it start on detection of the USB GPS device? ?(Yes, it was plugged in prior to powering the Pi).
How do I tell PiGate to look at a different port for GPS detection?

Thank you,

This was submitted a couple days ago and just now being posted.

I did manage to find docs for 2.1 after more searching and the default passwords in there worked on v2.2 for me so I¡¯m in now and beginning configurations.

Still, if the v2.2 docs are out and about, I would appreciate a copy.

I haven't tried HamVoIP Arch.? But, Arch standardized on Python 3 quite a few years
ago so it sounds a bit odd that you're having trouble with it.

What era (roughly) is your install of HamVoIP Arch built on?

What's the output of `python --version` you get?

The output of `ls -alF $(which python)`?

What about `pip --version`?

`pacman -Q | grep python-`

The contents of /etc/os-release?

Answers to these might help us narrow down where things are acting weird.

Also, how can I run Makepgk as "nobody"?

Best practice is to run it as yourself (your everyday unprivileged account) to build
.pkg.tar.xz files from AUR.? You can run it as nobody, but you don't have to.

I can heartly recommend Manjaro. (Even better than Endeavor and VERY much an "archlinux" based distro. And yes it uses pamac too.)

Re: Raspberry pi ham radio setup software

Jay, did you yet try some Arch Linux variant?

In my EndeavourOS, the installer software, called "pamac", loads a lot of software (those programs that are not already compiled and that are in the so called "Arch User Repository" (AUR)) from the sources and automatically compiles it (with all needed dependencies). I don't need anymore these "configure; make; make install"-headaches.

And this way, I also have always the (almost) freshest versions (rolling release distro).

Re: Raspberry pi ham radio setup software

I have been the lead developer for the Portsdown Digital Amateur TV Project for 6 years.? This collection of software runs on a Raspberry Pi and is touchscreen controlled, working primarily with LimeSDR and Pluto SDR, but it also supports AirSpy, RTL-SDR, SDRPlay and DATV Express for specialist functions.? It has been reproduced by over 500 users around the world.

There is a big difference beteween packaged software that is used for multiple functions and specialist software used for specific applications.? My approach has been to use other contributor's packages to build the basic system and then use GitHub for the specialist applications.? To make this work, the acceptable hardware list must be tight and well defined, and install and update scripts and procedures need to be strictly maintained.

Using this process I can publish a bugfix to a specialist application in less than 5 minutes - I challenge anyone to meet that timescale using packages.? This is important for volunteers when our most valuable commodity is time and attention span.

To understand the complexity please take a look at??which loads the packages and then builds the specialist applications.? There is a companion update script that can be invoked from the touchscreen.

Please don't try to tell volunteers how to do it.? By all means advise us if you think improvements could be made, but you must help us to make those improvements instead of complaining!
